How to Check Whether a Ransomware Decryptor Is Legitimate Before Paying

Verify the ransomware family and version, download only from an official listing or tool maker, and get qualified help before running a decryptor or paying.

Check the ransomware family and version, then verify that a matching decryptor is listed by No More Ransom or published by the named tool maker. Download it only from that official source, read its compatibility limits, and ask a trusted incident responder or law-enforcement contact to assess it before use. A listing is not a promise that files can be recovered, and paying does not guarantee a working key.

First, contain the incident and preserve evidence

If a device or network is actively affected, follow your organization’s incident-response plan and isolate affected systems. Avoid changes that could destroy useful evidence; consult qualified responders before wiping, rebuilding, or experimenting with recovery tools. CISA’s #StopRansomware Guide advises preserving relevant material, which may include system images, memory captures, logs, ransom notes, and precursor malware samples when appropriate. Its guidance is U.S.-focused organizational response advice; individuals can still use the same caution and seek qualified help.

Identify the ransomware before choosing a tool

A decryptor can be genuine and still be wrong for your infection. First establish the ransomware family and, where possible, the version or variant. No More Ransom’s Crypto Sheriff can analyze submitted information to check whether it can identify the ransomware and whether a solution is available.

What Crypto Sheriff may ask for

  • Encrypted files, up to 1 MB each.
  • The ransom note or details from it.
  • Identifiers in the demand, such as an email address, website, onion address, or bitcoin address.

Consider the information you submit and review the project’s data-provisioning terms. Treat a result as a useful lead, not proof that recovery will work or that every affected file is decryptable.

Verify the source, not just the download’s name

Use an official directory or the named maker’s own site to confirm both the tool and its publisher. No More Ransom maintains a family-oriented decryptor directory; other official resources include Kaspersky’s No Ransom tools and Emsisoft’s decryptor library. These are live catalogs whose coverage may change.

  • Search for the exact family or variant identified—not just a generic phrase such as “free ransomware decryptor.”
  • Follow the link from the official project listing to the named maker, and obtain the file there.
  • Do not treat a lookalike page, search advertisement, unsolicited message, or third-party download mirror as verification.
  • If the tool’s claimed publisher or family does not match the official listing, stop and ask a trusted responder or law-enforcement contact to review it.

Check whether the decryptor fits your infection

Before running anything, read the maker’s instructions and limitations. Confirm that the tool names the family and version you have identified, and check what file types or conditions it supports. Emsisoft cautions that some tools work only with particular ransomware versions and may not work with versions released after the tool was created. A catalog entry confirms that a tool is listed; it does not certify that the tool will recover your specific files.

There is no universal certification described by these official sources that proves every decryptor is legitimate. CISA’s guide recommends consulting federal law enforcement about possible decryptors, since researchers may find flaws in some variants and release tools. For an organization, involve its incident-response team or qualified external responders; individuals can contact appropriate law enforcement or a reputable incident-response professional.

Use a controlled recovery process

  1. Keep encrypted originals and evidence intact. Do not overwrite the only copies of affected files or remove incident evidence while options are being assessed.
  2. Follow the tool maker’s instructions and your response plan. Do not run an unverified utility or assume that a successful scan means the system is clean.
  3. Restore from clean backups where possible. CISA recommends restoring from offline, encrypted backups as part of recovery. Coordinate the restore so affected systems do not reinfect clean ones.
  4. Have responders guide changes to affected systems. Their assessment can help preserve evidence and avoid disrupting recovery or investigation.

Do not assume payment will restore your files

CISA and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) do not recommend paying ransom. Payment does not ensure that a decryption key will be supplied, that files or systems will be restored safely, or that stolen data will not be disclosed. Contact law enforcement and assess available recovery options, including a verified decryptor and clean backups, before making a decision. The CISA #StopRansomware Guide is dated October 19, 2023; tool availability and compatibility should be checked on the official project or maker page at the time you need them.
