Gatekeeper checks a downloaded app’s developer identity, notarization and whether it appears to have been altered—but passing those checks is not proof that the app is honest or safe for your particular use.
Start by checking where the app comes from
Apple describes the Mac App Store as the safest place to get apps. Apps downloaded from outside the store still receive macOS security checks, but you should take extra care to confirm the source.

- From the App Store: Check that the listing and developer name match the app you intended to get.
- From a website: Use the developer’s own site, reached through information you can independently confirm. Compare the app name and developer details with the developer’s official information; avoid lookalike download pages or third-party mirrors.
Apple’s overview of these protections is in Safely open apps on your Mac and Gatekeeper and runtime protection.
Understand what the warning is telling you
A first-open approval prompt for software from an identified developer can be a normal part of macOS’s security process. Other alerts indicate that the system could not verify something important—or has detected a problem. Don’t treat every dialog as a routine obstacle to dismiss.

- THREAT DETECTION – Stay one step ahead. Suspicious links, risky sites, viruses, and scams, caught automatically before they reach you.
- PERSONAL INFO PROTECTION – Keep your personal info safer. Identity monitoring watches for your exposed info and tells you what to do about it.
- SECURE CONNECTIONS – Just a few easy clicks, and we'll automatically protect your info on public Wi‑Fi, every time you connect.
- GUIDED ACTION – Know what matters and what to do next. Clear alerts and simple guidance make it easy to take action.
- MORE THAN ANTIVIRUS – Scam protection, identity monitoring, VPN, web protection, and antivirus work together to protect you, all in one place.
- “Apple cannot check it for malicious software”: macOS could not check the app. That is not the same as a clean result.
- Unverified developer: macOS cannot establish the developer’s identity. On macOS Catalina and later, Apple says this warning also means the app has not been notarized.
- “Will damage your computer” or a malware alert: macOS has detected malicious content or the app’s authorization has been revoked. Do not open it.
- Damaged app: The app may be corrupted or tampered with. Don’t bypass the alert; obtain a fresh copy from the authentic source and check whether the developer provides an explanation or update.
Apple explains these alert types and its documented override process in Safely open apps on your Mac.
Know what signing and notarization can—and cannot—establish
A Developer ID signature helps identify the developer and detect whether software has changed since it was signed. Notarization is Apple’s automated scan for known malicious content in submitted software. Apple puts the distinction plainly: “Notarization of macOS software is not App Review.”

A successful notarization result does not mean Apple assessed an app’s features, usefulness, business practices or privacy policy. Nor can it guarantee that the app is safe for every user. Treat a recognizable developer and notarization as useful signals alongside the download source, warning status and permissions—not as a blanket endorsement. See Apple’s Notarizing macOS software before distribution.

When macOS asks for access to a protected resource, consider whether the request makes sense for what the app claims to do. A voice recorder may need microphone access; a simple menu-bar clock usually has no obvious reason to record audio. Be similarly cautious about access to files or other private resources that seems unrelated to the app’s function.

Grant only the access you are comfortable with, and review or change it in System Settings’ Privacy & Security controls. macOS uses code identity to remember authorization for resources such as the microphone, but a permission prompt is not a safety certificate: a malicious or deceptive app can still ask for permissions. Apple describes app privacy controls in Control access to files and system resources and Control access to the microphone.
Use Open Anyway only after independent checks
Apple documents an Open Anyway option for certain blocked apps. Choosing it is an explicit override and saves an exception; it does not establish that the app is trustworthy. Do not disable Gatekeeper globally to make a questionable download run.

- First confirm that you obtained the app from the developer’s authentic site and that the developer can explain the warning.
- Look for an updated version or a clearer distribution source. If the warning indicates malware, revoked authorization or damage, do not override it.
- Only if you have independently established that the source is trustworthy and have a good reason the warning does not represent a real problem, follow Apple’s current Open Anyway instructions.
Optional: check an app’s signature and Gatekeeper assessment in Terminal
For technical users, Apple documents these commands for checking an app bundle’s code signature and assessing it against Gatekeeper policy:
codesign --verify --deep --strict --verbose=2 /path/to/App.app
spctl -a -t exec -vv /path/to/App.app
Replace /path/to/App.app with the actual path to the app bundle. These checks concern code signing and security policy; they cannot establish that an app behaves honestly or is free of every threat. Apple’s command guidance appears in the archived Code Signing and Notarization Guide; syntax and output can vary with macOS, so confirm them on the version you use.

Compare the three common download situations
| Where you got it | What the security signals mean | How to decide |
|---|---|---|
| Mac App Store | Apple calls the store its safest source for Mac apps. | Confirm the listing and developer match the app you want; still consider whether requested permissions fit its purpose. |
| Developer’s site; Developer ID and notarization are recognized | The developer is identified, and notarization indicates Apple’s automated scan found no known malicious content in the submitted software. Neither result is an App Review or guarantee of safety. | Confirm the site is authentic, heed any warning, and assess permissions. |
| Download that cannot clear or explain macOS’s checks | The developer, notarization or integrity could not be established, or macOS reported a problem. | Do not open it unless the issue is convincingly resolved through an authentic source; for malware, revoked authorization or damage alerts, do not override. |
