To check whether a PS5 game supports cross-play or cross-progression, look up the exact game in its current PlayStation Store listing and official game FAQ, then confirm details on the publisher’s support page. Verify each feature separately: cross-play lets players on supported platforms play together; cross-progression carries eligible game progress between supported platforms. Neither feature proves the other.
Check the exact game and platform versions first
Start with the game’s full title and the platforms involved: for example, the PS5 version and a friend’s PC version. Also check whether either player is using a PS4 version on a PS5. A game may support PS4-to-PS5 multiplayer without supporting play with PC or Xbox, and its save-transfer rules may be different again.

Use the game’s official PlayStation Store page and FAQ, then consult the developer or publisher support page for platform exclusions, account requirements, and setup instructions. Search those pages for “cross-play,” “crossplay,” “cross-platform,” “cross-progression,” “cross-save,” and “account linking.” Look for an explicit list of supported platforms rather than relying on a general “online multiplayer” label.

Verify cross-play separately
Cross-play means players on different supported platforms can play together. Check that the official wording covers the specific platform pair you care about; a statement that a game supports cross-play does not necessarily mean every version or platform can join the same matches.

Check whether cross-play is enabled by default or requires a setting, invite option, or account sign-in. For example, PlayStation’s Split Fiction FAQ says cross-play is available on supported platforms and directs players to Options → Privacy Settings to enable cross-play game invites. That menu path is specific to Split Fiction, not a universal PS5 setting.
System-level multiplayer functions are not proof of cross-play. PlayStation’s instructions for joining a game on PS5 describe joining other players’ game groups; confirm platform compatibility in the game’s own information.

Look for a distinct cross-progression or cross-save statement
Cross-progression means eligible progress is available across supported platforms. Find a separate official statement using terms such as “cross-progression” or “cross-save,” and check exactly what platforms, accounts, and progress it covers. If a page confirms cross-play but says nothing about progress, treat cross-progression as unconfirmed.
Read account conditions carefully. PlayStation’s Horizon Hunters Gathering FAQ says that this game supports cross-progression when the player is logged in and saves using the same PlayStation account. That is a title-specific requirement, not a rule for every PlayStation game. The page currently describes the game as planned for PS5 and PC (Steam), with playtests and a release date to be shared later; recheck its official information for changes.

Check account linking and confirm the right account
Some games require a publisher account or a linked platform account for cross-play, cross-progression, or both. Follow the current instructions for the exact game, and verify that the account displayed in the game is the one whose progress you intend to use.
PlayStation says that PC account linking may happen during sign-in or through a prompt, and that the process varies by game. See its PlayStation gaming on PC support guidance, then use the game publisher’s own steps for any title-specific linking. Linking an account by itself does not establish that all progress, purchases, or content transfers.

Keep cross-generation play and save transfer separate
Cross-generation multiplayer is specifically about whether PS4 and PS5 players can play together. PlayStation’s PS5 FAQ says they can play together “depending on the game,” with support provided by the developer. Check the exact title and versions rather than treating cross-gen support as PC or Xbox cross-play. For PS5 save sync, PlayStation gives this path: Settings → Saved Data and Game/App Settings → Saved Data (PS5) → Sync Saved Data → View Sync Status. Check online access requirements and source date
Online subscription requirements are separate from cross-play eligibility. PlayStation says some PS5 games require PS Plus for online multiplayer; check the exact game’s Store listing and your region. The PS5 game-joining support page provides PlayStation’s guidance on online game access.
Feature availability and account rules can change. Record the date and region of the official page you checked, and revisit it if the game updates or your platform/account setup changes. Store pages may mention online multiplayer without listing every supported platform pairing, so use the game FAQ or publisher support page to resolve details.
