On PS5, find a game you already own under Games home > Game Library > Your Collection, select it, then choose Download. The game installs automatically as it downloads; some games let you play part of the game while the rest copies. If you have not bought it yet, purchase it in PlayStation Store first.
Download a game you already own
- From Games home, open Game Library.
- Select Your Collection and choose the game.
- Select Download. PlayStation Support says the game installs automatically; depending on the title, part of it may become playable before the remaining data finishes copying. There is no single installation time that applies to every game. PlayStation’s download instructions.
Buy and download a new game
- Open PlayStation Store from Games home.
- Search for the game and select it.
- Choose Buy, then Confirm Purchase.
- After checkout, select Download. The game installs automatically as the download proceeds. PlayStation’s setup and download guide.
Check storage if the download will not start
On the console, go to Settings > Storage to see available space. PlayStation says game data can be kept on console storage, USB extended storage, or an M.2 SSD. A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage must be moved to console storage or M.2 SSD storage before you can play it. See PlayStation’s storage instructions.

- Delete games or apps you no longer need, or move supported data to free space. Deleting a purchased game does not remove your access to redownload it from your library.
- If you routinely need more room, a commercially available M.2 SSD that meets PlayStation’s current PS5 requirements is an optional way to expand storage. Check compatibility and installation requirements before choosing a drive; an expansion drive is not required to download a game.
Start a download from PlayStation App
You can also use PlayStation App to start a download remotely. Pair the PS5 with the app, then open Game Library > Purchased, select the game, and choose the download option. The console must have Stay Connected to the Internet enabled and be in Rest Mode for a remote download to proceed. Remote downloading still uses the console’s available storage. Troubleshoot a missing, locked, or failing game
- Game missing from your library: Confirm you are signed in to the account that bought it, then check that account’s transaction history. If another account owns the game, access may depend on Console Sharing and Offline Play settings. PlayStation’s guide to finding and downloading purchases.
- Download blocked or storage full: Check Settings > Storage, remove unneeded content or move supported data, then try again.
- Game has a padlock or owned content is unavailable: On PS5, go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses. PlayStation says restoring licenses does not affect data and may help with a locked or missing game or add-on. It is not a fix for a lock caused by an expired PlayStation Plus subscription. - Download finishes but the game will not launch: Check where it is stored, restart the console, and verify system software and PlayStation service status. Depending on the error, restoring licenses or deleting and downloading the game again may help. Use the instructions for the specific error rather than assuming one remedy covers every launch problem. PlayStation’s troubleshooting guide.
