The quickest reliable test is whether the game needs a physical disc to start or continue. If removing the disc prevents play, that copy is disc-dependent. To confirm a digital entitlement, sign in to the PlayStation account that may have bought the game, find the title in Game Library, and verify a completed PlayStation Store transaction. Downloaded files, a game tile, or a padlock icon alone cannot identify the license type.
Access can also come from an active PlayStation Plus benefit or another user’s console-sharing setting. Those routes let you play without proving that your own account purchased the game. The checks below separate the physical media, installed files, and account entitlement so you can identify exactly what you have.

What “digital” and “disc-based” mean on PlayStation
There are three separate things to identify:
- Physical disc: The console validates the game disc in its drive. The game may install substantial files to storage, but the disc remains the required proof that you can launch or play that copy.
- Digital entitlement: A PlayStation Network account owns a Store purchase, or has another valid license attached to it. The game files are downloaded, and the console checks the account entitlement rather than a disc.
- Installed game files: Data on the console’s storage. Installation does not reveal whether the license came from a Store purchase, a disc installation, PlayStation Plus, or console sharing.
A single title can therefore appear in your menus and occupy storage while still requiring a disc. Conversely, a digital game can be installed but unavailable if the purchasing account is missing, a subscription has ended, or the console cannot validate its licenses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe reliable check sequence
Use these checks in order. Stop when the evidence clearly identifies the access route, but complete the account checks if you need to distinguish personal ownership from a subscription or shared access.
#1 Best Overall
- Marvel’s Wolverine is a new action-packed adventure from Insomniac Games
- Play as Wolverine and Ravage enemies with explosive brutality and unleash razor-sharp adamantium claws to deploy fast, fluid attacks and overcome impossible odds
- An Original, Emotionally Charged Story. Beneath Wolverine’s gruff exterior and violent temperament is a man fighting for a cause greater than himself
- A Global, Adrenaline-Fueled Journey where you slice into enemies across detailed locales such as the frosted Canadian Wilderness, the narrow streets of Tokyo, and the high and low districts of the island nation of Madripoor
- Test the physical requirement. Look for the game disc and insert it into the PS4 or a PS5 model with a compatible disc drive. Start the game, then close the game and remove the disc. If the console will not launch or continue the game without that disc, the playable copy is disc-dependent.
- Check the signed-in account’s Game Library. On the account currently signed in, open Game Library and locate the title. PlayStation states that games purchased from PlayStation Store are displayed there.
- Verify the transaction. Open the purchasing account’s transaction history and look for a completed PlayStation Store purchase for that title. Make sure the transaction belongs to the account you are checking, not merely to another profile on the console.
- Identify subscription or sharing access. If no purchase appears, check whether the title is supplied by an active PlayStation Plus benefit or by another user’s console-sharing settings.
- Repair a missing license record. If you have evidence of a Store entitlement but the game is locked or unavailable, restore licenses using the PS5 or PS4 path below. Restoring licenses does not delete saved data.
- Handle PS4-to-PS5 disc upgrades correctly. An eligible PS4 disc can unlock a downloaded PS5 version, but you must keep the PS4 disc inserted every time you play that upgraded PS5 copy.
Check whether the game needs a disc
Run the removal test
Find the physical disc, insert it, and launch the game normally. Once you reach the title screen, close the application and eject the disc. Try launching again. A message asking for the disc, or a failure to start without it, is decisive: the copy is tied to physical media even if the game was installed from that disc.
Do not treat the presence of an installation as evidence of a digital purchase. Disc versions commonly copy game data to the console so loading is faster; the disc still acts as the license check. The meaningful question is what the console requires at launch, not where the files are stored.
If the disc is not recognized
A failed disc test is conclusive only when the console can read the disc. If the system does not recognize it, follow the console’s disc troubleshooting guidance: check that the disc is clean, free of visible damage, and fully inserted with the label oriented correctly for your model. Test again after restarting the console. A read error does not prove that the game is digital; it may simply mean the drive cannot validate the media.

PS5 Digital Edition limitation
A PS5 Digital Edition without a compatible disc drive cannot read a PS4 game disc. It therefore cannot use the disc-dependent PS4-to-PS5 upgrade path described by PlayStation. On a PS5 with a drive, insert the disc whenever you play a disc-based copy or its disc-funded PS5 upgrade.
Confirm a digital PlayStation Store purchase
Use Game Library
Sign in to the account you believe bought the game and open Game Library. PlayStation’s support guidance says games purchased from PlayStation Store are displayed in the library. Find the title and inspect the available download or play option.
Seeing a title in Game Library is strong evidence that the account has access, but it is not by itself proof of a personal purchase. A title can be present because of a subscription benefit or access supplied through console sharing. Use transaction history to establish the source.

- Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
- Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
- Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
- Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Check transaction history
Open the transaction history for the account that is signed in. Look for a completed Store transaction naming the game. Confirm that the purchase is not pending, canceled, refunded, or attached to a different account. PlayStation recommends transaction-history verification when checking whether a Store purchase succeeded.
If the game was obtained as part of a bundle, an entitlement may appear under the bundle or a related product name rather than the exact title shown on the home screen. Match the purchase date and product details to the game, and check any account that household members may have used. Do not assume that a download started on one profile belongs to every profile on the console.
When no transaction appears
An absent transaction means that account does not show a completed individual Store purchase for the title. It does not automatically mean the game is disc-based. Check the two other common access routes:
- PlayStation Plus: The game may be available through a current catalog or claimed benefit. Access can change when the subscription or the specific benefit ends.
- Console sharing: Another user’s account may be supplying access through its console-sharing setting. The title can launch on the shared console without being purchased by your account.
Record which account owns the entitlement or which subscription supplies it. That distinction matters if you move to another console, cancel a subscription, or remove the sharing account.
Do not use a padlock icon as a format test
A padlock usually signals a license or access problem, not “digital” or “disc.” A disc-installed game can show a lock when the disc is missing or unreadable, while a digital game can show one when the console cannot validate the Store entitlement. Before deciding what format you have, check the account, transaction, subscription, and sharing status.
Restore licenses on PS5
- Sign in to the account that owns the Store purchase.
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses and follow the on-screen confirmation.
After the process completes, return to the game and try again. PlayStation states that restoring licenses does not affect saved data.

Restore licenses on PS4
- Sign in to the purchasing account.
- Open Settings.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Restore Licenses.
- Confirm the operation, then retry the game.
System-software and regional menu labels can vary. If your console uses different wording, use the current support instructions for your system rather than guessing at an equivalent option.
PS4 disc games upgraded to a PS5 digital version
This is the most common situation that looks digital but remains disc-dependent. For an eligible PS4 disc game, PlayStation can provide a downloaded PS5 version. The PS5 version’s files are digital, yet the original PS4 disc remains the license proof.
Requirements and conditions
- You need a PS5 console with a compatible disc drive for the cited disc-upgrade process.
- The PS4 disc must be from the same country or region as the PlayStation account.
- Only eligible PS4 games qualify; eligibility is determined per game.
- Upgrade availability, price, and duration vary by title. Do not assume that every upgrade is free or permanently available.
How to recognize the upgrade path
The PS5 version may be downloaded and displayed with a PS5 game icon, which can make it look like a normal digital purchase. Check the game’s access instructions and the original disc. If the PS4 disc must be inserted each time you play, the upgrade is still disc-funded. Removing the disc requirement would require a separate digital entitlement.

Compare the possible access routes
| Access route | Disc required to play? | Where to verify | What the access represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disc-based PS4 or PS5 copy | Yes; insert the readable game disc | Physical disc test and disc-read check | Access tied to physical media |
| Individual PlayStation Store purchase | No disc, provided the account entitlement validates | Game Library and the purchasing account’s transaction history | Digital entitlement owned by that account |
| PlayStation Plus access | No disc while the applicable benefit remains active | Subscription status and the title’s current benefit | Subscription-based access, not necessarily an individual purchase |
| Console sharing | No disc if the sharing account and settings remain valid | Other user’s account and console-sharing settings | Access supplied by another account |
| PS4 disc upgraded to PS5 digital version | Yes; insert the original PS4 disc for each play session | Upgrade details plus the original disc | Downloaded PS5 files backed by physical-disc ownership |
Common situations and the correct diagnosis
“The game is installed, so it must be digital.”
Not necessarily. Disc games install files too. Eject the disc and attempt to launch the game; the requirement for that disc is the determining evidence.
“The icon is on the home screen, so I own it.”
An icon only shows that the console knows about the game or its installed files. Check Game Library, transaction history, subscription status, and sharing before calling it a personal purchase.

“There is a padlock, so it must be a disc game.”
A padlock indicates that the console cannot currently validate access. It can result from a missing disc, an account mismatch, an expired benefit, sharing changes, or a missing license record. Restore licenses only after confirming the account that should own the entitlement.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11“The game launches for another family member but not for me.”
That pattern often points to account ownership or console sharing rather than a different game format. Sign in to the purchasing account, verify its transaction, and confirm that the console-sharing arrangement is still enabled.
“The PS5 download works, but it asks for a PS4 disc.”
That is expected for an eligible PS4 disc upgrade. The downloaded files are PS5 digital files, but PlayStation still requires the original disc at every launch or play session. Keep the disc with the console and do not sell or discard it while relying on that upgrade.
“I bought the game, but it is missing.”
First check that you are signed in to the purchasing account and that the transaction completed. If the purchase appears in transaction history but the game remains locked, restore licenses using the console-specific path. If no transaction appears, investigate another account, PlayStation Plus access, or console sharing before concluding that the license is lost.
A practical ownership checklist
Use this checklist when cataloging games on a shared PS4 or PS5:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Write down the exact game edition and platform shown on the console.
- Mark whether a physical disc launches the game and whether removing it blocks play.
- Record the PSN account whose Game Library contains the title.
- Confirm a completed transaction in that account’s transaction history when claiming personal digital ownership.
- Note whether PlayStation Plus supplies the access and whether the benefit is still active.
- Note whether another user’s console-sharing setting is required.
- For an upgraded PS4 disc, retain the disc and record that the PS5 version needs it each time.
- If a lock appears, verify the access source before restoring licenses; restoring licenses does not replace a missing disc, expired subscription, or removed sharing permission.
What evidence is conclusive?
The strongest evidence for a disc-based license is a repeatable launch requirement: the game plays with the disc inserted and refuses to play when that disc is removed. The strongest evidence for an individually owned digital license is a completed Store transaction in the signed-in account, combined with access that does not depend on a disc, subscription, or another user’s sharing setting.
When those signals conflict, treat them as different entitlements until you identify the account or physical media actually being used. A downloaded file can coexist with a disc license, and a playable game can come from a subscription or shared account rather than a purchase in your name.
