Choose the PC around the model and agent workflow you will actually run. For GPU inference, dedicated VRAM is often the first hard limit, but the model weights are only one part of the memory budget. Your operating system, applications, inference runtime, and the agent’s growing context all consume memory. An NPU can reduce power use and accelerate compatible Windows features, yet its TOPS rating alone does not prove that a third-party agent or model will use it. Storage also matters: local model files can occupy tens to hundreds of gigabytes.
There is no universal RAM, VRAM, or NPU minimum for every local agent. The reliable method is to identify the model, context length, runtime, and operating system first, then verify that the selected hardware and execution provider support them.

Start with the workload, not the “AI PC” label
A local agent is a software workflow, not a single hardware profile. A coding agent that reads a large repository, a document assistant that searches a folder, and a lightweight automation model can have very different memory and accelerator requirements.

NVIDIA’s local-AI guidance similarly frames selection around the operating system, available GPU or unified memory, model size, and workflow. A product marketed as an AI PC is not automatically compatible with the model or agent you want.
How memory is divided between the model and the rest of the PC
Dedicated VRAM: the main ceiling for a discrete GPU
When a model runs on a discrete GPU, its dedicated video memory determines how much model state can remain on the accelerator. If the model or its working data does not fit, the runtime may place some data in system memory and move it across the bus. That can add latency and reduce throughput. As Microsoft’s Patrick Nikoletich and Stuart Schaefer put it, “With a discrete GPU, dedicated video memory is an important constraint: moving model data between system memory and the GPU can add overhead.”
NVIDIA lists GeForce RTX products with 6–32 GB of VRAM and RTX PRO products with 16–96 GB. Those are product-family ranges, not guarantees that a particular parameter count, context length, or agent will run well. Check the exact card’s capacity and the runtime’s support before buying.
System RAM: a shared budget, not spare model space
System memory holds the operating system, applications, inference runtime, model layers that are not on the GPU, input data, and caches. Microsoft explicitly notes that “The operating system, your applications, and the inference runtime need memory, too.” A PC that loads a model successfully while idle can still become unstable when an IDE, browser, container, or large project is open.
Official guidance reviewed for this topic does not establish one universal system-RAM minimum for local agents. Treat RAM as a workload budget: measure the peak use of the complete agent task, not just the model-loading screen. Leave headroom for normal desktop work and for temporary spikes when tools return large outputs.

Unified memory: one pool with several owners
Some systems let the CPU and GPU access a shared physical memory pool. This can simplify data movement and provide more total capacity than a small discrete card, and NVIDIA lists systems with up to 128 GB of unified memory. The headline capacity is not wholly available to model weights: the operating system, applications, runtime, and KV cache compete for the same pool.
Unified memory is therefore a capacity and workflow decision, not a promise of GPU-equivalent performance. Confirm that your operating system and inference software support the architecture and that the model can use the available accelerator path.
Context and the KV cache grow during an agent run
The context window includes the conversation, retrieved files, tool results, and instructions the model must consider. The runtime keeps a KV cache for that context. Microsoft says that longer context increases memory use and the processing work required for the next request.
Size the machine for the largest realistic task. A short prompt may fit comfortably while a repository-wide coding task or a document agent that returns long tool outputs exhausts memory later. If the runtime supports context limits, set a practical maximum and monitor whether truncation, swapping, or out-of-memory errors appear.
Compare the four hardware paths
| Hardware path | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Discrete GPU | Local inference where GPU acceleration and dedicated VRAM are important. | Exact VRAM, model and runtime compatibility, context length, memory left for the desktop workload, power, physical size, and budget. |
| NPU-equipped PC | NPU-optimized Windows features and compatible on-device models, including many Copilot+ paths. | Whether the exact agent and model use the NPU, NPU capability, runtime and driver support, and available system memory. |
| Unified-memory system | Workflows that benefit from CPU and GPU sharing a larger memory pool. | Total capacity after the OS, applications, runtime, and KV cache; operating-system support; model compatibility; and cost. |
| CPU fallback | Small or compatibility-first workloads supported by a CPU inference path. | Acceptable latency and throughput for your actual task. No apples-to-apples independent CPU/GPU benchmark for a representative agent task was established here. |
These paths are not a performance ranking. Microsoft says Foundry Local can detect hardware and select among a Qualcomm NPU, DirectX 12 GPU, NVIDIA CUDA, or CPU fallback. Windows ML can target CPU, GPU, or NPU. The available path still depends on the model and execution provider.

How to choose a discrete GPU
Use VRAM as a filter, not a complete specification
First compare the exact VRAM capacity with the model’s documented memory requirement at your intended context. Then reserve space for the runtime and the rest of the GPU workload. A card that barely accommodates the weights may fail when the KV cache grows or when another GPU application starts.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteA shopper filter such as “GPU with 24 GB VRAM” can narrow listings, but 24 GB is not an official universal minimum. Verify the model, quantization, context, supported backend, and driver for the specific card.
Check the software path before the hardware purchase
Confirm that the runtime supports the GPU architecture and its acceleration API. On Windows, that may mean a CUDA, DirectX 12, or another execution provider. A larger card is not useful if the agent cannot load its model on that provider or if the required driver is unavailable.
Account for the rest of the system
Discrete GPUs add power, cooling, noise, and physical-size considerations. Make sure the case, power supply, motherboard slot, and cooling solution can support the card. These constraints do not change the model’s memory requirement, but they can determine whether a planned upgrade is practical.
Does a local AI agent need an NPU?
Usually, no general NPU requirement applies to every local agent. An NPU matters when the software has a programmed path to use it, particularly for low-power, on-device Windows features.

Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as using an NPU capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second, and many Copilot+ features require a 40-plus-TOPS NPU. That figure is a feature-eligibility threshold, not a general minimum for local agents.
Three Windows software paths
- Windows AI APIs: the simplest route for supported Copilot+ features.
- Foundry Local: a broader Windows path that can use DirectX 12 GPUs and CPU fallback as well as supported NPUs. Cached models can run offline after their initial download.
- Windows ML: a lower-level option for ONNX models and execution-provider control, including CPU, GPU, and NPU targets where supported.
Before paying for a higher NPU rating, check that the exact agent, model format, runtime, and driver expose an NPU execution provider. A high TOPS number without that software path may provide no benefit to your workload.
Plan storage for model files and caches
Model files are separate from RAM and VRAM. Ollama’s Windows documentation says model storage can range from tens to hundreds of gigabytes and allows the model directory to be moved with the OLLAMA_MODELS environment variable.
Use a fast local drive with enough free space for:
- the model files and alternate versions you keep;
- download and conversion temporary files;
- runtime caches and logs;
- your agent’s source documents, repositories, or indexes;
- normal operating-system free space.
The tens-to-hundreds-of-gigabytes range is specific to Ollama’s documentation and is not a guarantee for every runtime or model library. Check the exact download sizes before provisioning the drive.
A practical sizing procedure
- Define the largest real task. Describe the files, tools, conversation length, and simultaneous applications the agent must handle.
- Select the exact model build. Record parameter size, quantization, file format, context limit, and any published hardware requirements.
- Choose an execution provider. Confirm whether the runtime will use CUDA, DirectX 12, an NPU provider, unified memory, or CPU fallback on your operating system.
- Estimate accelerator capacity. Compare the model’s documented memory use with dedicated VRAM or the usable portion of unified memory. Include KV-cache growth at the intended context.
- Budget system RAM. Add the operating system, applications, runtime, data, and any model layers that remain in system memory. Do not count total installed RAM as entirely available to the model.
- Reserve storage. Check the download size of every model and leave room for caches, source data, and future versions.
- Validate with the real workflow. Run the longest representative task while monitoring VRAM, RAM, context length, temperature, and whether the runtime starts swapping or offloading.
- Set operating limits. If memory rises without bound, reduce context, limit tool-output size, unload unused models, or close competing applications before replacing hardware.
Workload patterns and the hardware choice they suggest
Interactive coding agent
A coding agent may keep a repository map, open files, compiler output, test logs, and a long conversation in context. Prioritize the runtime’s supported GPU or unified-memory path, enough VRAM or shared capacity for the peak context, and system RAM for the IDE, build tools, and containers. Test with a representative repository rather than a short synthetic prompt.

Document and knowledge agent
Retrieval can keep individual prompts short, but poorly bounded tool output can still expand context. Storage capacity and indexing workload may matter as much as accelerator capacity. Set limits on retrieved chunks and tool output, then measure memory during a multi-document session.
Low-power, always-on assistant
An NPU can be attractive when the model and Windows runtime explicitly support it. Confirm the execution provider and driver first. If the agent falls back to the CPU, the NPU’s TOPS rating will not deliver the expected result.
Compatibility-first or occasional use
CPU inference can be reasonable for small models or infrequent tasks when latency is acceptable. The appropriate decision depends on measured response time for your agent; the available official material does not provide a universal CPU-versus-GPU threshold.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying by “AI PC” branding: replace the label with a verified model, runtime, and execution-provider requirement.
- Treating VRAM as the whole memory budget: include the KV cache, runtime, desktop applications, and any offloaded model data.
- Converting 40 TOPS into a universal requirement: keep the number tied to the Copilot+ features that specify it.
- Assuming unified memory is all model memory: subtract the operating system, applications, runtime, and cache from the usable pool.
- Testing only model load: run a full agent task with realistic files and tool responses.
- Ignoring disk capacity: check model downloads and keep room for caches and multiple versions.
- Assuming vendor figures are independent benchmarks: treat product-family capacities and vendor-reported throughput as references, not guarantees for another model or PC.
What published figures can—and cannot—tell you
Microsoft reported that its MAI Code 1.1 Flash model on a Surface Laptop Ultra reached peak memory use of 75.5 GB at a 256k context. It also reported prompt-processing throughput of 923.5 tokens per second at 64k context and 769.8 tokens per second at 128k context. Those results are vendor-reported measurements for that particular model, system, context, and metric; they are not a general PC recommendation or an independent comparison.
Likewise, NVIDIA’s 6–32 GB GeForce RTX and 16–96 GB RTX PRO figures describe product families. They do not establish which parameter count will fit, what context will be usable, or how fast an agent will respond.
Final buying checklist
- Have you named the exact model, quantization, context, and runtime?
- Does the runtime support the selected GPU, NPU, unified-memory architecture, or CPU path?
- Is there enough dedicated VRAM or usable shared memory after accounting for KV cache and other allocations?
- Is system RAM sufficient for the operating system, applications, runtime, and offloaded data?
- Can the storage hold model files, caches, source data, and future versions?
- Have you checked current drivers and execution-provider support for the exact hardware?
- Have you tested the longest realistic agent task rather than only loading the model?
Hardware lineups, drivers, execution providers, and model catalogs change quickly. Recheck the model’s current requirements and the manufacturer’s specifications immediately before purchase.
