A physical game card does not always contain the full game. On Nintendo Switch 2, check the exact package or official listing for a Game-Key Card label: that format is a key to download the game data, rather than a card holding the full game. Confirm the title, platform, edition, and region before buying; a retailer’s generic “physical” or “game card included” description is not enough.
How to check before you buy
- Confirm the exact version. Check whether the listing is for Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch, and note the edition and region. Packaging and product details apply to specific versions.
- Inspect the Switch 2 packaging. Nintendo says the Game-Key Card label appears toward the bottom half of the case label. Nintendo UK also identifies a key icon at the upper right of the card’s front. These are clues that the card is not carrying the full game data. Nintendo of Canada’s physical game card explainer and Nintendo UK’s Game-Key Cards page show the format.
- Read the product-specific description. Look for explicit wording such as “Game-Key Card,” a statement that game data must be downloaded, or a required download-space amount. If retailer details are vague, check the platform or publisher listing for that exact edition. Nintendo says the digital product listing provides the space requirement.
- Ask if the format remains unclear. Ask the retailer or publisher whether the full game data is stored on the card. Do not treat “physical,” “game card included,” or a generic content-included field as confirmation.
What a Game-Key Card means for setup and play
Nintendo Support explains that Game-Key Cards do not contain the full game data. The card enables the download; it is not a complete offline copy of the game. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview sets out the requirements and launch behavior.

- For the initial download: connect the console to the internet and have enough free space in system memory or on a microSD Express card. The package states the required space for that game. Nintendo says a Nintendo Account is not required to download Game-Key Card data.
- To start playing: the card must be inserted. Nintendo says an internet connection is needed for the first launch after download; after that, the game can be started offline, provided the card is inserted. A title’s separate online features may still require internet.
- If storage is short: free up console space or use a compatible microSD Express card. It is an optional storage route, not a requirement for every buyer.
Check the exact game, not just the format label
Do not assume every physical game on every console uses the same packaging convention. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card guidance describes Switch 2 formats; it does not establish a universal rule for other platforms. Publishers can confirm details for a particular product. For example, Square Enix’s FAQ for the Nintendo Switch physical version of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade says that version includes a game card containing game data. That specific confirmation should not be generalized to other games or editions.

What to compare between two editions
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Where the game data is stored | A regular card may carry game data; a Game-Key Card requires downloading it to console storage or a microSD Express card. |
| First-play requirements | For a Game-Key Card, confirm internet access and the free-space amount shown for the exact game. |
| Requirements after download | The Game-Key Card must remain inserted to start the game. A game may separately need online access for particular services. |
| Platform, edition, and region | Physical formats and product details are title- and version-specific. Verify the exact item being sold. |
