Before buying a PC game, compare the game’s current official system requirements with the exact specifications of the computer you plan to use. Check the operating system, processor, graphics card and video memory, RAM, storage, and any required graphics features. A match is a useful guide—not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, graphics quality, or trouble-free launch.
1. Find the game’s current requirements
Start with the game’s official store listing or publisher support page. On Steam, scroll to the game’s System Requirements section. If you are buying elsewhere, check that storefront’s listing and, when needed, the publisher’s support page. Confirm the supported operating system as well as the hardware: some games require 64-bit Windows. Steam’s performance troubleshooting guidance explains that being at or near a game’s stated requirements can still be associated with launch or performance problems.

2. Find your computer’s specifications
On Windows, open Start or Search, type dxdiag, and open the DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Microsoft’s instructions explain how to check the DirectX version on the System tab. DxDiag also provides system and display details that can help identify your computer’s hardware. Microsoft’s DirectX instructions describe the tool and the version check.

3. Compare each requirement, not just one headline spec
Match the computer you will actually play on against the game’s listed requirements. Check the exact processor and graphics model, RAM, operating system and 64-bit support, available storage, and any stated graphics API or feature-level requirement. Game listings differ, so use the requirements for that specific title.
- Graphics: Compare the exact GPU model and VRAM, not just the graphics brand or series. A laptop GPU can differ from a similarly named desktop model, and integrated graphics may be less capable than a dedicated graphics card.
- DirectX and graphics features: The installed DirectX version alone does not prove the graphics hardware supports every feature the game needs. Check any API or feature requirement separately.
- Operating system: Confirm that your Windows edition and architecture are supported; a 64-bit requirement matters even if the hardware otherwise appears sufficient.
- Memory and storage: Compare the listed RAM and storage requirements with what your PC has available. Include a storage type requirement if the game specifies one.
Valve warns that the DirectX version shown by Windows can be misleading when the hardware itself lacks support for a required feature. Steam’s troubleshooting article also cautions that integrated graphics may be less capable than dedicated graphics.

4. Read minimum and recommended requirements differently
Minimum requirements
Minimum requirements are the developer’s stated lower baseline, not a promise of high frame rates, high graphics settings, or reliable performance in every situation. Valve states: “Simply meeting the system requirements does not mean you’ll have high FPS or strong in-game performance.” Steam’s performance guidance makes this distinction explicit.
Recommended requirements
Recommended requirements are a more appropriate point of comparison if you want a better chance of using the developer’s intended settings, but they still do not establish a particular frame rate or resolution for every system. Epic’s support guidance says a PC that just meets minimum requirements will probably not run a game at its highest settings. Epic’s PC compatibility guidance explains the practical difference.

If your PC meets minimum but falls short of recommended, plan to lower graphics settings. Capcom’s PC/Steam guide, updated July 22, 2026, suggests setting graphics to low in that situation. Capcom’s troubleshooting guide gives that advice.

If a component is close to the requirement, treat the result as uncertain rather than as a pass. Seek current tests for the same game using the same or closely matching CPU and GPU, especially when comparing laptop hardware or integrated graphics. A generic compatibility checker may help translate model names, but it cannot guarantee how the game will perform on your exact PC.

If a third-party checker disagrees with an explicit requirement on the game’s current official listing, use the official listing for the stated requirements and supported operating systems. Community posts and search snippets can point you toward configuration-specific information, but another player’s result does not prove the same outcome on your computer. The official guidance cited here does not provide one universal checker or cross-game pass threshold.

6. Make the call before checkout
- Open the game’s current store listing or publisher support page and note every requirement, including OS support.
- On your Windows PC, run
dxdiagand collect the system and display details you need; verify any other specifications against the PC or its manufacturer information. - Compare the exact CPU, GPU and VRAM, RAM, OS and bitness, storage, and graphics-feature requirements one by one.
- If a required component falls short or the OS is unsupported, do not assume the game will work. Look for a more specific official compatibility statement or evidence from closely matching hardware before purchasing.
- If the PC only meets minimum requirements, decide whether you are willing to lower settings rather than expecting a high-quality experience.
