Before buying a Nintendo Switch game, open the product page for the exact title and edition and check its Supported languages section. For a physical copy, check the packaging or the console’s Software Information > Support Information. A game follows the language selected on the console only if that game supports it.
Check the exact game listing
- Find the game’s product page in the relevant Nintendo eShop or Nintendo store.
- Locate Supported languages and confirm that it names the language you need.
- If the listing distinguishes text, subtitles, interface, or voice-over, check the specific component that matters to you.
Language support is listed for each game, not guaranteed across the Switch catalog. For example, Nintendo’s Stardew Valley listing names Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Latin American Spanish, Traditional Chinese, and American English. Nintendo’s Eastward listing names Japanese, French, German, Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and American English. These examples do not establish support for other games, editions, or regions.

Check text and spoken audio separately
A game can offer a language for text without offering it for spoken audio. Read the product description as well as the general language list if voice acting or subtitles are important. Nintendo’s CLANNAD listing, for instance, says text is Japanese or English while audio is Japanese only.

Read the language details on the package. Nintendo also says you can check the supported region on the console under Software Information > Support Information. Region information and language support answer different questions: checking the region does not tell you by itself which text or audio languages the game includes.

Nintendo says Switch game cards are generally not region-locked outside the Chinese region, but it has not tested all overseas software with all regional consoles and does not guarantee full service and support. Chinese-region consoles and games are incompatible with those distributed in the Americas. For an overseas physical copy, verify both the game’s language details and the relevant region information rather than assuming one confirms the other.
Do not infer language support from your eShop or console settings
The country or language of the eShop does not guarantee that every game sold there supports that language. Nintendo’s regional FAQ for the Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru eShops says that not all games available there have Spanish-language options. That caveat is specific to those eShops; check the exact game listing wherever you shop.
Rank #2
- New stages and fighters are joined by the combined rosters of every past Super Smash Bros. Game
- Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
- Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
- Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
- Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer
The Switch’s system-language setting selects a language a game can use; it does not add a translation. Nintendo says a game defaults to the console’s selected language only so long as that language is supported by the game. After buying, set the console to your preferred language, then check the game’s own settings if you need to choose among supported options.
When comparing editions or regions
Compare the exact edition and region, not just the game title. Use the listing or package to verify each detail that matters:
Rank #3
- Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
- Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
- Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
- Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
- Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam
- Text: Is the interface and in-game text available in your language?
- Subtitles: Are subtitles offered in that language, if the game has spoken dialogue?
- Audio: Is spoken dialogue available in your language, or only in another one?
- Edition and region: Does the language information apply to the specific digital edition or physical copy you plan to buy?
Do not assume language support is identical between editions or regions. If a listing does not make clear whether a language applies to text, subtitles, or audio, check the publisher’s description or ask the seller before purchasing.
