A Nintendo Switch 2 uses your selected system language only when the game supports that language; changing the console setting cannot add a translation the game does not include.
How to check a game’s language support
- Identify the exact game and edition. Check the title you plan to play, including its edition and the regional store listing you intend to use. Language availability can differ by title or edition, so do not assume another listing describes the same release.
- Look for language details in the official listing. Check the current product or store page for the exact title and edition. Nintendo’s general guidance does not establish one standard place or label where every game lists its supported languages, so an absent field is not proof that a language is unsupported.
- Ask the publisher if the information is missing or unclear. For third-party games, Nintendo directs players to the publisher for specific compatibility information. Ask specifically whether your preferred language is supported in the edition you plan to play.
- Check the language elements that matter to you. A language listing may not, by itself, establish that menus, other text, subtitles, and spoken audio are all available in that language. Confirm those details with the title’s official information or publisher if they affect your decision.
Nintendo’s general rule is that Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch software follows the console’s selected language only if the software supports it: Nintendo Support: Can I Play My Game in Another Language?

Set the Switch 2 system language
After confirming that the game supports your preferred language, set it on the console using Nintendo’s documented path:
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select System, then Language.
- Choose your preferred language and select Restart.
The console restarts, and suspended software closes. When you next launch a compatible game, it can use the selected system language. For the full procedure, see Nintendo Support: How to Change the System Language on Nintendo Switch 2.

If the game still appears in another language
- Confirm that the specific game and edition support the language, rather than relying on the console setting alone.
- Check the game’s own language options, if available. Nintendo’s general system-language guidance does not specify a universal in-game menu path.
- If the title is a third-party game and the listing does not answer your question, contact its publisher for title-specific details.
Keep game languages separate from system and accessibility languages
The console’s system-language setting and Switch 2 accessibility features are not a catalog of game translations. Nintendo’s accessibility guide covers languages for features such as text-to-speech and GameChat speech and text; it does not establish which languages a particular game supports. Some accessibility support may also require an update. See Nintendo’s Guide to Accessibility Features on Nintendo Switch 2 for those feature details.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. For original Nintendo Switch games played on Switch 2
Check two separate things: whether the game supports your preferred language and whether the original Switch game is supported and works as expected on Switch 2. Nintendo says some Switch games may be unsupported or not fully compatible on Switch 2, and recommends contacting the publisher for specific information about non-Nintendo software. That compatibility warning does not mean a game’s language support has changed. See Nintendo Support: Can I Play Nintendo Switch Games on Nintendo Switch 2?.
