In Google Messages, check the send icon beside the compose box before sending: it indicates whether the message will use Wi-Fi or mobile data, SMS, or MMS. For a message already sent, look for its method label in the conversation. RCS status icons can also help distinguish RCS from SMS/MMS, but their absence alone does not explain why a message did not send.
Check the sending method before you send
-
Open the conversation and enter your message in the compose box.

Look at the send icon beside the compose box. Google says this icon displays the method the message will use: Wi-Fi or mobile data for RCS, or SMS or MMS. The icon is the clearest indicator for a new message.

Check the method for a message already sent
Look at the message in the conversation for its method label. Google Messages can use RCS over Wi-Fi or mobile data, but SMS or MMS may be used when RCS is unavailable. RCS availability can vary by region and carrier, so a conversation may not always use the same method.
Google’s RCS sent, delivered, and read icons are not displayed on SMS or MMS messages. Seeing RCS status icons is therefore a useful clue that the message used RCS. Not seeing them does not, by itself, prove that the message failed or identify exactly what happened.

Why bubble color is not the best test
Google’s security guidance describes dark blue bubbles for RCS and light blue bubbles for SMS/MMS, but color is less direct than the method label or compose-bar icon. For the clearest check, use the send icon before sending and the method label for a message already in the conversation. Google’s encryption guidance discusses the color distinction.
