That does not settle the rights to download or redistribute its weights: as of October 7, 2026, Mistral said weights were planned for release by the end of October, but the reviewed model page did not show Large 4’s specific weight license or self-hosting requirements. Preview data also has a training exception, so confirm how it applies to your account before sending sensitive information.
What commercial use is available now?
As of October 7, 2026, Mistral Large 4 was listed as Public Preview Open v26.10. The currently documented route for businesses is access through Mistral Studio’s API, governed by the applicable commercial terms and product settings. API access is not the same as a right to download, modify, or redistribute model weights.

Mistral’s October 6 announcement said, “We will release the weights by the end of the month.” That is a stated plan, not confirmation that the weights have been released. The announcement and model page reviewed for this article did not establish the specific license or conditions for Large 4 weights.
What do Mistral’s commercial terms allow?
The commercial terms grant customers a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, and non-sublicensable license to access and use Mistral AI Products, with a stated exception allowing sublicensing to end users. The terms prohibit unlawful use, infringement of third-party rights, certain reverse-engineering attempts, compromising product security, and certain account or API-key transfers.

Customers retain ownership rights in their Customer Data. They own outputs to the extent permitted by applicable law, and Mistral assigns any rights it may have in those outputs. The terms do not promise that an output is unique or accurate. Customers remain responsible for having the necessary permissions for submitted data, reviewing outputs for accuracy and suitability, and using them lawfully.
Does “open weight” mean Large 4 is open source?
Not by itself. “Open weight” describes a model whose weights are made available; the license attached to those weights determines what users may do with them. Mistral’s general licensing guidance says that many of its open models use Apache 2.0, while some use modified MIT terms with a revenue threshold and commercial-license or Studio alternatives. It also directs users to each model card for the applicable license. Those general statements do not establish Large 4’s license.
Rank #2
Before downloading or deploying Large 4 weights, check the model card and license notice for the released version. In particular, verify commercial-use permissions, redistribution and modification conditions, attribution or other obligations, and any restrictions that apply to your intended product. Do not infer those rights from API access or from the license used by another Mistral model.

Which deployment options are available, and what do they mean?
| Route | What is established as of October 7, 2026 | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Mistral Studio preview API | Available for Large 4 under Mistral’s commercial terms and applicable product settings. | Preview data handling, account settings, service terms, region, and current pricing. |
| Mistral-hosted service | Mistral describes the preview as served on its European infrastructure and refers to availability across multiple regions. | Whether your account and contract specify a particular processing region or data-residency commitment. |
| Private cloud or on-premises | Mistral describes these as intended deployment paths associated with open weights. The weights were still planned, not confirmed released, in the reviewed documentation. | Released weights, Large 4’s specific license, deployment instructions, hardware requirements, and operational responsibilities. |
| Partner-served deployment | Mistral’s legal center lists terms for partner-served deployments. | Which provider’s terms apply, who processes the data, the region, and the relevant retention and training settings. |
The reviewed Large 4 model page listed 52 billion active parameters, 1.05 trillion total parameters, a 1.6-billion-parameter vision encoder, and a 1-million-token context window. These figures describe the model, not a validated server configuration. Mistral’s reviewed materials did not provide Large 4-specific hardware sizing or a deployment recipe, so they are not enough to select self-hosting hardware or estimate its operating cost.
For the Studio API, Mistral AI Documentation displayed prices on October 6, 2026 of $0.68 per million input tokens, $0.07 per million cached input tokens, and $2.09 per million output tokens. These are page prices from that date, not a guarantee of future or account-specific pricing; check the live pricing and applicable terms before budgeting.
Will Mistral train on Large 4 preview prompts?
There is a material preview exception. Mistral’s commercial terms allow training in specified circumstances, including where settings or an order form permit it, when users provide feedback, and for Labs or Preview Models. Mistral says inputs and outputs for Labs or Preview Models may be used to train its models. It also says preferences selected for other products—including zero data retention—do not apply to Labs or Preview Models.
The reviewed documentation does not settle whether Large 4’s Studio preview is treated as a Labs or Preview Model for every account, or how a particular account’s settings affect the exception. Confirm the designation and applicable terms with Mistral for your account. Until that is clear, avoid submitting confidential, regulated, or otherwise sensitive information to the preview.

The commercial terms say Mistral uses Customer Data and outputs to provide, maintain, and optimize its products, including debugging and performance review; that clause excludes model training, which is addressed separately. The reviewed sources do not establish a universal retention period for Large 4 preview data, nor do they make every privacy setting applicable to the preview.

Mistral describes its preview service as running on European infrastructure and mentions multiple regions. That provider description is not, by itself, a customer-specific promise that all processing or storage for a particular account stays in Europe. Check the contract, account configuration, and applicable product terms for the regions and residency commitments that actually govern your use.
When Mistral processes personal data on a customer’s behalf using Mistral infrastructure, the Data Processing Agreement applies according to the commercial terms. Review that agreement together with the commercial terms, any additional product terms, the privacy policy, and—if a partner serves the deployment—the partner-served deployment terms.

A workflow that connects to third-party services may send data beyond Mistral. Mistral’s additional terms place responsibility on the customer for third-party connector terms and requested actions, and state that Mistral does not control third-party MCP servers or their processing, routing, storage, transfers, or other actions. Assess each connector and server separately when mapping where prompts and retrieved data can go.
What should a business check before choosing a route?
- Rights: Separate the Studio API’s commercial terms from the license for downloadable weights. For weights, rely on the Large 4 model card and license notice for the released version.
- Data handling: Confirm preview designation, training terms, retention behavior, and any settings that apply to your account before sending sensitive data.
- Location: Get the relevant region and residency commitments from the contract or account terms rather than relying on a general description of European infrastructure.
- Operations: Compare who manages security, updates, availability, compute, and deployment. Large 4-specific self-hosting requirements were not stated in the reviewed documentation.
- Third parties: Include partner providers, connectors, and MCP servers in the data-flow and legal review.
- Outputs and inputs: Ensure your organization has rights to submitted data and a process for checking outputs before relying on or distributing them.
For a business that needs a documented route today, the public-preview API is the established option, but its preview data terms need particular attention. A self-hosted deployment may offer a different operational boundary, yet Large 4’s weight license and deployment requirements must be confirmed from its release documentation before relying on that route.
