To find out whether a laptop charger is compatible, check the exact laptop model’s charging requirements—not just whether the plug fits. Confirm that the laptop accepts power through the port, supports the charger’s protocol, and can receive the voltage and wattage it needs. Then verify the connector, cable and charger’s safety approval.
Start with the laptop’s exact model and charging requirements
Find the full model name or number on the laptop’s underside, in system information, or in the manufacturer’s support account. Use that identifier to open the official manual or specifications. Look for the supported charging port, required charging standard, adapter part number, voltage and wattage. Requirements can differ between models that look similar, so do not rely on a brand name or product family alone.

When a specification is unclear, ask the manufacturer or seller to confirm compatibility with the complete model number before buying. A matching connector shape by itself is not enough.

Check USB-C charging and USB Power Delivery
A USB-C-shaped port does not automatically accept charging. Confirm in the laptop’s documentation that the specific port supports power input. Dell cautions that USB-C connector appearance alone does not establish that a laptop can charge from any USB-C adapter. Dell’s adapter guidance recommends checking the model’s compatibility and power requirements.

If the laptop charges over USB-C, check whether it requires USB Power Delivery (USB PD) and whether the charger supports it. Apple says that a Mac that charges by USB-C can use a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB PD; this applies only to Mac laptops that use USB-C charging, not every Mac model. Apple’s Mac adapter guidance does not mean all such Macs require the same wattage.
Manufacturers document support for particular models rather than guaranteeing that every laptop with USB-C will charge from every USB-C charger. For example, Lenovo’s ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 documentation describes USB-C power input for that computer; its requirements should not be applied to other laptops.

Compare the charger’s power with the laptop’s needs
Read the charger’s output label and compare it with the requirements in the laptop’s own documentation. Check voltage and wattage, as well as any supported USB PD output details the manufacturer specifies. Do not assume a charger is suitable just because it can connect or has a high maximum wattage; the laptop and charger must support a compatible charging arrangement.

An underpowered charger may charge slowly or may not keep the battery charging while the laptop is in use. Lenovo notes this limitation in its ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 guidance. The result depends on the model and its workload, so consult the exact laptop’s specifications rather than treating one wattage as universal.

For barrel plugs and proprietary connectors, use model-approved guidance
If the laptop uses a barrel plug or another non-USB-C connector, check the manufacturer’s approved replacement adapter or exact-model support page. Match the specified adapter and connector requirements; a plug that appears to fit may still have incompatible electrical specifications or fail to meet the laptop’s requirements.
HP advises using the supplied adapter, an HP replacement, or a compatible adapter purchased from HP, and matching the notebook’s voltage and wattage requirements. Follow the guidance for the particular notebook where available. HP’s AC adapter guidance explains its replacement and requirements advice.

Check the cable, connector condition and safety approval
Compatibility applies to the complete charging setup, not only the power brick. Verify that the connector and any required cable meet the laptop and charger manufacturers’ instructions. Lenovo advises choosing a safety-approved or certified third-party USB-C charger in its ThinkBook 16p Gen 4 documentation; that model-specific advice is not a substitute for checking another laptop’s requirements.

Do not use a visibly damaged adapter, plug or cable. If damage is present or you are unsure whether a replacement is appropriate, follow the manufacturer’s support guidance rather than attempting an improvised repair.

A practical checklist before using or buying a charger
- Identify the laptop’s full model number.
- Check the official manual or specifications for supported charging ports, protocol, adapter part number, voltage and wattage.
- For USB-C, confirm that the port accepts charging and check whether USB PD is required.
- Compare the charger’s documented output with the laptop’s requirements; consider whether the charger can supply enough power while the computer is in use.
- For a barrel or proprietary connector, confirm the approved adapter and connector requirements for that exact model.
- Verify the cable and charger are suitable and in good condition, and check any manufacturer safety or certification guidance.
- If any requirement remains uncertain, ask the manufacturer or seller to confirm compatibility with the complete model number.
A USB-C Power Delivery laptop charger is an option only when the specific laptop supports USB-C PD and the adapter meets its documented power requirements. There is no single generic wattage that fits every laptop.
How to compare two candidate chargers
Compare candidates in this order. A mismatch at an earlier step is a reason not to proceed, even if a later feature is attractive.
- Does the laptop accept charging through that port?
- Does the charger support the required charging protocol?
- Does its output meet the laptop’s specified voltage and power requirements?
- Are the connector and included cable suitable, and does the laptop require a particular adapter or recognition feature?
- Does the charger meet applicable safety guidance and the manufacturer’s compatibility listing?
Only after those checks should you compare portability, cable length or price. Convenience cannot fix a mismatch in port support, protocol or power.
