In the United States, start with FoodSafety.gov’s Recalls and Outbreaks page, then compare the notice’s full product details with the package in your kitchen. A matching brand alone is not enough: check the exact product, package size, codes or dates, and distribution information listed in the notice. For FDA-regulated foods, FDA’s recall pages offer additional ways to search; for meat, poultry, and processed egg products, check USDA’s FSIS notices.
Start with the federal recall listing
FoodSafety.gov’s Recalls and Outbreaks is a practical first stop because it brings together current notices from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA FSIS). The federal Recalls.gov food page also directs consumers to FoodSafety.gov for current federal food recall and outbreak information.

Which agency handles a product depends on its category: FDA regulates most foods, while USDA FSIS handles meat, poultry, and processed egg products. You can also check FSIS Recalls and Alerts directly for those USDA-regulated products.
Choose the right lookup route
| Lookup route | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| FoodSafety.gov: Recalls and Outbreaks | Starting point for current FDA and USDA recall and outbreak notices. | Read the individual notice to determine the exact products and packages covered. |
| FDA: Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts | Search or filter FDA public notices by details such as date, brand, product description, reason, and recalling company. | FDA says this page is not comprehensive. It retains entries for three years; older notices move to an archive. |
| FDA Enforcement Report | Look up classified FDA recall records. FDA describes it as a weekly consolidated report with advanced search fields such as firm, product, and classification. | The firm listed as the recalling firm may not be the product’s actual manufacturer. |
| USDA FSIS Recalls and Alerts | Notices for meat, poultry, and processed egg products under USDA FSIS jurisdiction. | Check the notice’s package identifiers and distribution details; do not infer coverage from the product category alone. |
| The recalling company’s notice | Verify package images, UPC, lot or date codes, package type, and distribution information such as states or stores, when supplied. | Use it alongside the relevant agency notice, especially to check whether the product was distributed where you bought it. |
The FDA public-notice page is not a complete recall history. If a search there returns nothing, that does not establish that a product was never recalled or that no relevant notice exists. For older FDA notices, use the FDA recall archive, which can be searched using a product or company name and year.

Match the notice to the package you have
Read the complete notice and compare every identifier it provides with the actual package. FoodSafety.gov cautions that recall information is product-specific: the listed information must match before you consider your item part of that recall.
- Brand and exact product name
- Package size and type
- UPC, if listed
- Lot, product, or other package code
- Use-by or sell-by date, if listed
- Establishment number, when relevant
- Distribution location, such as named states or stores
Use the package itself rather than a memory of the product or a search for the brand alone. A notice may cover only certain sizes, codes, dates, or locations within a brand’s product line. If you cannot find one of the identifiers in the notice, check the recalling company’s announcement and the agency notice for package photos or additional details; contact the agency or company if the match remains unclear.

- IDENTIFY WHICH FOODS MAY BE CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS. Food intolerances happen when your gut microbiome and digestive enzymes can’t break down a food ingredient. Although gluten and lactose are the most common issues, intolerances can happen with any food item. When these intolerances go unchecked, symptoms like headaches, gas, diarrhea, acne, and bloating may develop.
- TESTS 800 COMMON FOOD ITEMS. Our food intolerance test for adults and children covers 14 major food categories: dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, seafood, nuts, sweeteners, spices, fats, oils, mushrooms, superfoods, and preservatives.
- HOW IT WORKS. (1) Register your test kit on the 5Strands website or mobile app (2) Collect 10-15 strands of hair. (3) Send your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid shipping materials. (4) Once your sample is received, we’ll email you the results within 4 days. After 60 days, your hair sample will be permanently disposed of.
- EASY TO READ RESULTS. Each food item is labeled as Insignificant, Mild, Moderate, or Severe to help guide your elimination plan. This gives you clear directions to begin removing severe intolerance foods, moderate your intake of mid-level triggers, and keep safe foods in rotation to support gut health, digestion, and symptom relief.
- 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.
Know whether the notice is a recall or an alert
A recall identifies products to be removed from sale or use. A public health or safety alert warns of a potential risk, but may be issued when a recall cannot yet be recommended—for example, if investigators have not identified the source of an outbreak or a handling issue calls for a public reminder. An alert is not automatically a recall of every product in a brand line. Read its stated scope and directions, and do not assume that an alert and a recall cover the same packages.

- Do not open or eat it. Keep the item separate from food that is safe to eat.
- Follow the notice’s instructions. Depending on the product and recall, the notice may direct you to return it for a refund or dispose of it safely. Use the specific instructions rather than assuming every recall has the same remedy.
- Clean if the product may have contaminated your kitchen. If it was prepared or stored on surfaces or with utensils, FoodSafety.gov advises discarding the food and cleaning affected surfaces and utensils. Follow any product-specific cleanup and disposal guidance in the notice.
If someone has eaten the product and is ill or concerned about exposure, follow the notice’s health guidance and contact a healthcare professional as appropriate.
