Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo check a file conversion, compare the output with an untouched copy of the original in two separate passes: first check the content and appearance, then inspect the metadata that matters to you. Use a comparison tool suited to the file type, and treat its result as evidence only about the features it actually checks—not as a universal guarantee.
Keep the original as your baseline
Save an untouched copy of the source file before converting it. Compare the converted output against that copy, not against a file that has already been edited or resaved. Work on copies when using tools that can change or remove information.

Some comparison workflows preserve the inputs: Microsoft Word’s comparison creates a separate comparison document by default, and Adobe’s documented Analyzer workflow does not modify the compared files. Check the behavior of the specific application and workflow you use.
Check visible content and formatting
Open the converted file in an application that supports its target format. Review the parts that matter rather than assuming a file that opens correctly converted without changes.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Check that text, images, charts, tables, and embedded objects are present.
- Look for changed fonts, line wrapping, spacing, table dimensions, image placement, and page breaks.
- For spreadsheets, verify important values and formulas, not just how the cells look.
- For presentations or multi-page documents, review every slide or page that matters; a spot check can miss a problem elsewhere.
Format pairs can behave differently. Microsoft says Word formatting might be lost when saving and opening ODT files in Word; a PDF may not correspond page-for-page with its source because page breaks can shift; and saving as plain text removes formatting. These are documented examples, not rules for every converter or format version. See Microsoft’s Word file-format reference for the formats it covers.
Use a comparison tool that fits the file
| Tool | What it compares | How results appear |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Word Compare | Word document versions; options include text changes, formatting, and comments. | Creates a comparison document separately from the source files by default. See Microsoft’s Compare documents instructions. |
| LibreOffice Compare Document | Text documents and spreadsheets; marks inserted and deleted passages. | Shows changes in the reviewer’s document. See LibreOffice Help. |
| Adobe Acrobat web Analyzer | Selected attributes of two documents in a collection. | Shows match/no-match results, links values to source locations, and can export results to CSV. This is the documented web workflow; check current availability and product edition before relying on it. See Adobe’s Analyzer instructions. |
In Word, the path is Review > Compare; select the original and revised files, then choose the comparison settings relevant to your review. Word’s comparison options can include formatting, comments, and text changes. The available settings and comparison scope vary by tool, so a result from one application is not interchangeable with a result from another. Microsoft documents additional comparison options, including tables, headers, footnotes, text boxes, fields, and whitespace, in its Word CompareDocuments reference.

Inspect metadata separately
Metadata is not the same as visible formatting. Microsoft Support defines document properties, also called metadata, as details that describe or identify a file; examples include author, title, and subject. Check the properties relevant to your use case, and do not infer that they survived just because the converted file looks right. See Microsoft’s Office file-properties guidance.

Compare the relevant tags in the source and output; not every tag applies to every format, and support differs by format and metadata family. ExifTool is a metadata reader/writer, not a rendered-layout comparison tool. Its official documentation lists supported formats and metadata families: ExifTool documentation. Do not mistake a cleanup tool for a conversion check
Microsoft Document Inspector can find hidden content and personal information, but its purpose includes removing data; it does not certify that a conversion preserved metadata. Microsoft recommends using it on a copy because removed information may not be recoverable. See Microsoft’s Document Inspector guidance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Record what you actually verified
If someone else needs to rely on your check, record the source and output formats, the applications and versions used, the properties and visible features reviewed, and any known exceptions. Describe the scope precisely—for example, “checked author and title tags and compared text and tables in Word,” rather than “conversion fully verified.” A match result only applies to the attributes the tool examined; it cannot establish that every aspect of the file survived.
