Treat Figma’s review as a useful screening step—not a guarantee. Plugins are third-party code that can access user and file information, so use your organization’s approval process for work files and avoid running a plugin on sensitive files when important questions remain unanswered.
Why a Figma plugin deserves a safety check
Figma’s Help Center warns: “Plugins run third-party code and can access user and file information for their plugin actions.” Examples of accessible information include usernames, user IDs, avatars, cursor position, visible editor bounds, selected-object IDs and all layers in a file. Plugin APIs also provide ways to read and write files. The exact access depends on the plugin’s actions, but a plugin is not simply a harmless interface add-on.
That does not mean every plugin is dangerous. It means you should understand what a plugin says it does, what information it may handle and whether its declared connections fit its purpose before you let it run.
How to check a Figma plugin before installing it
-
Confirm the listing and its purpose
Make sure the Community listing is for the plugin you intend to use. Read its description and check that the stated function is specific and consistent; Figma’s guidelines require accurate descriptions and prohibit hidden functionality. Look for clear explanations of any separate account, extra payment or third-party data sharing. If those requirements seem likely but are not explained, ask the developer before proceeding.

-
Read any reviewed security disclosure
While logged in, look for the Data security info available label on the Community listing. If it appears, read the disclosure and note what information the developer says the plugin accesses, sends or stores. The disclosure program is voluntary, so no label means the information is unavailable there—not proof that the plugin is unsafe or safe. A disclosure is not a code audit.
-
Check declared network access
Inspect the listing’s network-access details and the domains the plugin says it contacts. Figma says access to any domain is allowed by default when network access has not been defined. Ask why a listed domain is needed if it does not seem related to the plugin’s stated job. A plugin that sends data to an external service should explain what it sends and why.

-
Consider storage, authentication and data sharing
Look for statements about whether the plugin sends information outside Figma, stores information derived from Figma APIs, uses its own backend or asks you to authenticate. Figma’s developer-facing disclosure principles recommend HTTPS for external requests, limiting network access to required domains, being transparent about external transmission and storage, and explaining who can access stored information. They also favor avoiding storage of Figma-derived data or using Figma-provided storage instead. Use these points to frame questions; they do not independently verify the plugin’s implementation.
-
Ask about anything that does not add up
If an apparent data use, domain, account requirement or payment is not explained, contact the support channel on the listing or ask your administrator. Figma makes developers responsible for providing user support. If important questions remain unanswered, do not test the plugin on a sensitive file on the assumption that its listing makes it safe.

What Figma’s review does—and does not—tell you
Figma reviews Community plugins before listing them, and its guidelines cover quality, trust and safety, business and legal concerns. The guidelines say Figma may reject plugins that read or modify a file without users’ explicit awareness and consent, or that do not adequately protect customer data. Figma also describes manual review as checking for minimum functionality and cautions that it does not guarantee every plugin will be usable or that every policy-violating item will be blocked. Review is a baseline screen, not a security certification or warranty.
When to involve your organization administrator
For company or otherwise sensitive files, follow your organization’s plugin approval process rather than relying only on your own reading of a listing. Organization and Enterprise administrators can require approval before members use plugins; Enterprise also offers workspace-level management options. If you cannot confirm that a plugin is approved for your work, ask your administrator before using it with work files.

How to compare plugins that do the same job
Popularity or a Community listing alone does not establish that a plugin is safer. Compare the evidence available for each option instead:
- Network access: Which domains are declared, and do they fit the plugin’s function?
- Disclosure: Is a reviewed security disclosure available, and are its answers specific enough to understand the plugin’s handling of data?
- External handling: Does the plugin send or store Figma-derived data outside Figma, and does it explain the purpose, storage and access?
- Requirements: Are separate accounts, payments, licensing and third-party sharing clearly described?
- Workplace approval: Does the plugin meet your organization’s approval rules?
If neither listing answers a question that matters to your files or workflow, ask the developer or your administrator rather than treating one plugin’s relative popularity or review status as proof of safety.
