Use the official medical board or licensing agency for the state where the doctor practices. Search its physician license lookup by name, match the license number when available, and read the status together with any expiration date, restrictions, or disciplinary actions. If the result is unclear or appears out of date, contact the board directly.
Check the state where the doctor practices
A physician can hold separate licenses in multiple states, and the status may differ from one state to another. Start with the state where the doctor is practicing—not simply the state where you live or where the doctor trained.

Find the state medical board or professional licensing agency. If you are unsure which agency handles physician licenses, use the Federation of State Medical Boards’ directory of state medical boards.
Use the official state license lookup
- Open the state board’s physician profile or license lookup. Use the board’s official website rather than relying only on a general web search or third-party directory.
- Search the physician’s full name. If the site returns several people with similar names, compare the license number, if available, and other identifying details.
- Read the status and related fields. Check the displayed license status and any expiration date, restrictions, or board actions shown on the profile. States may use different labels and display different information, so do not assume that every state defines “active” identically.
- Ask the board to confirm if needed. If there is no matching record, the status is ambiguous, or the information conflicts with another source, contact the state board through its official directory and ask it to confirm the current status.
FSMB’s consumer guide says medical board profiles include licensure status and disciplinary history at minimum, but it describes information supplied by state and territorial boards during 2020. Treat that as general guidance, not a guarantee that every state’s current profile has the same fields or layout. FSMB consumer guide

Use DocInfo as a national lookup or second check
FSMB’s free DocInfo provides public physician information, including license history and disciplinary actions. Its search covers MDs, DOs, and PAs; it does not cover other professions such as dentists, nurse practitioners, or podiatrists unless the person also holds one of those designations. For those practitioners, use the relevant profession’s state licensing board. DocInfo profile information DocInfo query coverage
| Lookup route | Best use | Coverage and limits |
|---|---|---|
| State medical board profile | Checking the license in a particular state and requesting direct confirmation from that state’s regulator | State-specific; status labels and profile detail vary by state |
| FSMB DocInfo | Searching physician licensure history and disciplinary information across participating board records | MDs, DOs, and PAs; board data is supplied at varying intervals |
Interpret the result carefully
An active license is not a full assessment of a doctor
“Active” answers a licensure-status question. It does not, on its own, establish a physician’s skill, conduct, or quality of care. Read any listed restrictions and disciplinary history separately. FSMB says its Physician Data Center profiles do not contain malpractice information, so DocInfo is not a complete malpractice-history search. FSMB Physician Data Center FAQ
Online records may not update at the same time
FSMB says state medical boards provide information to its Physician Data Center at different intervals: daily, weekly, monthly, or quarterly. A national lookup may therefore not reflect a recent state-board change yet. For a current, consequential question—or whenever two records disagree—ask the relevant state board to confirm.
