Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo find out whether a data centre is planned near your home, identify the parcel and the authority that controls its land use, then search that authority’s official planning records. Search by parcel number, address, owner and developer, using both data-centre terms and broader zoning terms. Confirm the latest dated status in the official case documents; a search with no results does not prove no proposal is being considered.
1. Identify the parcel and the authority responsible for it
Start with the official county or city parcel map, geographic information system (GIS), or assessor search. Find the parcel near your home and note its parcel number, address, owner of record and jurisdiction. The mailing address or nearest city may not identify the authority that controls land use: the parcel could be in unincorporated territory, or a municipal boundary may affect which office handles the application.

Use the parcel’s location to determine whether to search a city, county, or another planning authority. If the parcel is near a boundary, check both jurisdictions and look for annexation records.

On the responsible authority’s website, look for planning applications or case searches, project pages, zoning maps, hearing calendars, Planning Commission materials, council or county-board agendas and minutes, public notices, and permit records. Search using several identifiers: parcel number, site address, owner, developer and any known project name.

Use multiple descriptions because a proposal may not be filed under the everyday term “data centre.” Try:
- “data centre,” “data center,” “data facility,” “technology park” and “server farm”;
- “rezoning,” “conditional use,” “special use,” “special exception,” “site plan” and “development application”;
- “annexation,” if a boundary change may be involved.
Local codes may classify data centres under a broader land-use category, and those classifications can change. For instance, Hayward, California, says its code was amended in April 2026 to create a data-centre category and require a Major Conditional Use Permit and City Council public hearing for new applications. That is a local rule, not a standard that applies elsewhere. See Hayward’s data-centre planning page.
3. Confirm the proposal’s actual status and latest update
Distinguish a land purchase or public announcement from a filed application, scheduled hearing, approval, permit, construction, withdrawal, rejection or cancellation. These are different stages, and a project can change status after an announcement. Read the latest dated entry in the official case record and open linked documents rather than relying on an old news item or a third-party map.

Local examples show why checking dates matters. Calvert County, Maryland, reports that AWS formally withdrew its Calvert Technology Center application on August 4, 2026. The County also says a six-month moratorium on site-plan approvals took effect August 28, 2026, with data-centre applications not accepted during that period. These details apply to Calvert County and should not be taken as a rule elsewhere. Check the County’s data-centre page for its current information.
Loudoun County, Virginia, reports that amendments approved March 18, 2025, made data centres conditional uses in the General Plan and required special-exception approval in specified industrial districts; some earlier applications could proceed under grandfathering rules. Check the specific case record to see which rules apply to it. Read Loudoun County’s zoning-amendment information.
If the online record is unclear, contact the planning office and ask whether a case or pre-application matter exists for the parcel, owner or project. A pre-application discussion may not appear in a public application portal.

4. Check hearing dates and ways to comment
Open the public notice and case documents to find any hearing date, comment deadline, submission method and staff contact. Deadlines and procedures depend on the jurisdiction and case, so use the notice itself rather than assuming a general rule. Do not assume every nearby resident will receive a mailed notice: the distance covered and the events that trigger notice are set by local law.
As one local example, Hayward says properties within 300 feet receive mailed notice when an application is received and when there is a public meeting. This is Hayward’s stated notification rule, not a general data-centre notice radius. Check the city’s notice details.
5. Look for environmental and infrastructure records
Environmental review and permits may be handled separately from the land-use application. Search the relevant state or national environmental agency’s records for the project name, parcel and developer. Look for assessments, permit notices and public-review documents, then check their dates and comment deadlines.

- THE ENNOLOGIC DECIBEL METER provides accurate sound level (decibels or loudness) readings from 30 to 130 dB with ±1.5 dB accuracy. It is the ideal tool to discover if something at your workplace or in your neighborhood is too loud, potentially causing hearing damage. Loudness is highly subjective and difficult to determine without proper equipment. Use this Type 2 decibel meter to get convincing data for any situation.
- AVOID OR RESOLVE DISPUTES WITH YOUR NEIGHBORS: Monitor and record noise levels in your neighborhood and outdoor traffic in your area. Check how loud your car audio is. Make sure your aftermarket exhaust is below the noise ordinance limits. Check the decibel level of leaf blowers, weed eaters, lawn mowers, and tractors. Know the actual sound level in decibels before talking to your neighbors.
- DETERMINE IF YOUR WORKPLACE IS SAFE: Do you need to prove to your coworkers that a noise source at your workplace is too loud and causes hearing damage? Monitor sound levels on a construction site? Now you can monitor and record sound levels of machines or equipment, or perform area noise monitoring anywhere. Unlike other meters, the ennoLogic eS528L can record noise levels for hours or days for later review and to provide supporting data.
- VERY USEFUL AT HOME: Balance the outputs of your home theater speakers, not easily done by ear. Sound proof doors and windows. Measure how quietly your air conditioning runs, or sound levels of home appliances. Or take this meter to a store to compare the noise level of appliances or air conditioners before purchasing.
- RELIABLE AND ROBUST DECIBEL METER: Measurement range 30-130 dBA, accurate to ±1.5 dB. A and C frequency weighting. Fast and slow response. MAX reading display and ANALOG BAR GRAPH DISPLAY. Analog outputs (DC and AC). Large 1.5” LCD display with BACKLIGHT, easy to read even from a distance. Tripod mount (tripod not included). External power option. Auto power off. Comes with 9V battery, Software CD (Windows only), USB cable and user manual. 10 YEAR WARRANTY.
For example, Virginia’s Department of Environmental Quality issued a public notice concerning proposed wetland impacts associated with the QTS Richmond 5 project. That notice illustrates why an environmental filing may be separate from a local planning case; it does not establish the status of another project. See the Virginia DEQ notice.
Where relevant, also search for associated substations, transmission projects or other utility facilities. Infrastructure may appear under a separate application, project name or agency record.
6. Use government project portals as a record of stages and documents
Some government portals publish a project’s assessment stages and link to submissions and supporting documents. New South Wales’ planning portal is one example. Its process and stages are specific to that jurisdiction, but it demonstrates the kind of official project page to look for. View the NSW project page.

7. What to do if your search finds nothing
A blank search result is not proof that no proposal is being considered. The case may use an unfamiliar project name or broader land-use category, be filed with another jurisdiction, or still be at a pre-application stage. Contact the responsible planning office and ask it to search by parcel number, address, owner and developer. If the site is close to a jurisdictional boundary or annexation is possible, check the neighboring authority as well.
Treat third-party project maps and community tips as leads, not permitting records. Verify any claimed status, hearing or deadline against the underlying government case page, notice or agency document.
How to compare two proposed projects
Compare the official records rather than relying on headlines or treating local rules as universal:
- the case stage and date of its latest official update;
- the zoning or land-use approvals required;
- whether a hearing or comment period is scheduled or open;
- which environmental documents are available and what they cover;
- whether related infrastructure permits are linked or filed separately.
Approval names, notice distances and review steps can differ between jurisdictions, so compare each project against its own local rules.
