OFAC returns exact address matches, not fuzzy matches. A result is a potential hit to review; no result does not prove the address, its owner, or related funds are free of sanctions risk.
Check the exact address against OFAC
- Confirm the address and network. Copy the full string from a reliable source, preserving every character. Identify the asset and blockchain network so you know which address you are checking. OFAC records identify both the address and digital currency, with labels such as “Digital Currency Address – XBT” or “Digital Currency Address – ETH.”
- Open OFAC Sanctions List Search. Paste the address into the ID # field and run the search. OFAC says digital-currency address searches do not use fuzzy logic, so a typo or a different address will not be returned as a near match. The OFAC FAQs explain address searches and list limitations.
- Review the whole record if you get a result. Check the digital currency identifier, the associated designated person or entity, the list or sanctions program, and any program code. OFAC explains that program codes help indicate how a true hit should be treated; do not make a decision from a search snippet or isolated label. See OFAC FAQ 562 and OFAC guidance on program codes.
What a match or no match tells you
An exact match is a potential sanctions hit
A match means the searched identifier appears in OFAC’s records. Establish which program and designated person or entity the record concerns, then follow the applicable rules and your organization’s compliance process. A search result is not, by itself, a complete legal determination about a person, transaction, or funds.

No match is not a clean bill of health
A no-match result means only that the exact address was not returned by that search. OFAC says its digital-currency address listings “are not likely to be exhaustive.” The wallet owner may be designated, other addresses may be associated with the wallet, or transaction history may raise concerns even when this particular address is absent.

Indirect exposure needs contextual review
OFAC guidance notes that an unlisted address sharing a wallet with a listed address, or one that previously transacted with a listed address, may pose sanctions risk depending on the circumstances. A historical connection is a reason to investigate, not a universal rule that every related transaction is prohibited. For material activity or a business relationship, review relevant ownership and transaction history; firms may consider blockchain analytics tools and historical lookbacks. See OFAC virtual-currency guidance.

When an individual check is not enough
The official lookup is a practical first step for an individual asking whether one exact address is listed by OFAC. Businesses handling digital currency may need a documented, risk-based process that screens relevant parties and addresses, reviews transactions and indirect exposure, escalates possible matches, and repeats screening as lists and facts change. OFAC also makes SDN and other sanctions lists available as downloadable files for screening.

OFAC describes tailored, risk-based controls rather than a single solution for every firm. Chainalysis describes its separate Address Screening service as offering manual UI and API checks, direct and indirect exposure views, configurable settings, and continuous monitoring; those are vendor-described capabilities, not an OFAC endorsement. See Chainalysis Address Screening.
Do not use the retired Sanctions Oracle for production screening
Chainalysis’s Sanctions Oracle documentation says the tool is no longer supported or maintained, was last updated on March 18, 2026, and is not recommended for new integrations or production sanctions screening. Its retired status is distinct from the vendor’s separately described Address Screening service. See Chainalysis Sanctions Oracle documentation.

What to do if potentially blocked virtual currency is held
If you may hold property that must be blocked, seek appropriate compliance or legal direction rather than relying on the address search alone. OFAC FAQ 646 says a U.S. person must deny parties access to virtual currency required to be blocked, comply with holding and reporting requirements, and use controls aligned with a risk-based approach. It says blocked virtual currency must be reported within 10 business days and annually thereafter while it remains blocked. These obligations depend on the applicable rules and circumstances; see OFAC FAQ 646.

This procedure checks OFAC records, not every sanctions regime worldwide. OFAC says U.S. persons and persons otherwise subject to its jurisdiction have the same sanctions obligations for digital currency as for traditional fiat currency. It recommends that relevant technology companies, digital-currency administrators, exchangers, users, and payment processors develop tailored, risk-based compliance programs. A check against OFAC does not substitute for checking other lists that may apply to the person or transaction. See OFAC FAQ 560.
