Choose storage based on what you keep on the device—not a one-size-fits-all number. Check your current usage, account for photos and videos, apps, downloads and files you need offline, then leave room for that library to grow. More built-in storage is most useful if you work with large files, record or edit high-resolution video, install large games, or want to rely less on internet access and cleanup.
How to choose the right storage capacity
- Check what you use now. Look at the storage breakdown on the device you already own, and note which categories are growing.
- List what must stay available locally. Count your likely photos and videos, games and creative apps, work files, and music or films downloaded for offline use.
- Consider how long you will keep the device. A library that grows over several years can make a capacity that feels comfortable today restrictive later.
- Compare the next storage tier with the effort of managing space. Weigh its additional purchase cost against how often you would delete or offload content, depend on a network, or move files elsewhere.
These are decision heuristics, not a published benchmark: Apple does not provide a universal storage recommendation or a statistic establishing how much space a typical user needs. The best fit depends on your files, habits, device model, and access to cloud services.

How much storage do I need on my iPhone?
Think about your camera roll, downloaded media, games, and apps first. If you shoot or keep lots of video on the phone, use demanding apps, or want music and films available while traveling, favor more built-in capacity. If you stream, sync selectively, and regularly remove files you no longer need, you may be comfortable with less.

Is 128GB enough for an iPad?
It can be enough if you mainly browse, read, stream, use a modest set of apps, and do not keep a large media library or many files offline. More space is worth considering if the iPad is also a creative or work device, you install large games, edit media, or regularly download content for trips.
Compare capacities for the exact iPad model rather than assuming the whole iPad range has the same choices. At the time of the Apple US store pages cited here, the standard iPad and iPad Air showed 128GB and 256GB options; iPad Air also showed 512GB and 1TB. These are examples, not a lasting or complete configuration list; check the current iPad store page or iPad Air store page for your model and market.

How much storage should I get on a MacBook?
Base the choice on the size and location of your working files. Documents and web use may need less local space than a workflow involving large creative projects, media libraries, or files you need when offline. If you expect to keep active projects and source material on the laptop for years, additional built-in capacity can reduce the need to move or delete files.

How much space do photos and videos take?
There is no single dependable size to budget per photo or video in this information: the amount depends on factors such as capture settings and the file itself. Rather than plan around a generic figure, inspect the storage used by your existing photo and video library, then consider how quickly it grows and whether you keep originals or projects locally.
For iPhone and iPad, the storage screen can show which categories are using space. For a Mac, use the storage breakdown in System Settings. If video capture or editing is central to your use, allow more headroom than a workflow based mainly on streaming and small documents.

Does iCloud storage increase iPhone storage?
No. iCloud storage and device storage are separate: buying more iCloud capacity does not increase the built-in storage in an iPhone, iPad, or Mac. iCloud can sync supported content and help with features such as photo optimization and backups, but you still need enough local capacity for the operating system, apps, and content you want available offline. Apple’s guide explains the difference between iCloud and device storage; its iCloud on iPhone guide says 5GB is provided free, with plan details and availability depending on region and subject to change.
Why the usable space is less than the number on the box
Advertised capacity is not all available for personal files. Apple says formatting and the operating system use part of the space, so actual formatted capacity is lower. Apple’s February 26, 2025 explanation states: “1GB = 1 billion bytes, and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes; actual formatted capacity less.” Capacity labels and operating-system reports can also use different decimal and binary conventions, so their displayed numbers may not match exactly. Read Apple’s explanation of how storage capacity is measured.

Which storage tier should you buy?
Storage tiers differ by model and can change. The Apple US store pages available on October 7, 2026 showed these examples; they are not a complete or permanent matrix, and prices and availability vary by market and configuration.
| Example model or range | Options shown on Apple US store pages | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Standard iPad | 128GB, 256GB | Apple Buy iPad |
| iPad Air | 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB | Apple Shop iPad Air |
| iPhone Air | 256GB, 512GB, 1TB | Apple Shop iPhone Air |
| MacBook Air | 512GB, 1TB | Apple Buy MacBook Air |
Use your exact model’s current listing to compare the price of the next tier. Choosing more built-in storage is generally a purchase-time decision; cloud services and cleanup can help manage particular needs, but neither changes the device’s physical capacity.
