Verify a crypto rewards campaign through channels you find independently—not links or QR codes in the message. Confirm the offer on the organization’s own site or social accounts, look for outside complaints, and stop if anyone asks you to pay crypto to claim a prize or disclose a private key or seed phrase. These checks can uncover warning signs, but no checklist can certify a campaign as safe.
Verify the campaign without using its message link
- Find the organization independently. Search for its website and social accounts yourself. Do not use the unsolicited message’s link or QR code as your verification route. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warns that digital-asset fraud often starts on social media and advises consumers to find a provider’s site and contact route independently. Its guidance says: “Do thoroughly check out people or firms before you trade.” CFTC digital-asset fraud guidance.
- Look for the exact campaign on official channels. Compare the announcement, eligibility rules, deadlines, and claimed organizer with what appears on the organization’s independently located website or social accounts. If you cannot find the campaign there, do not proceed; contact the organization through a route you found separately.
- Search for independent warnings. Search the organization and campaign name alongside terms such as “scam,” “review,” and “complaint.” Check whether the domain’s age and the stated business-location details fit the organization’s claims. These checks may reveal inconsistencies, but a clean search result or plausible domain does not establish that an offer is genuine. The CFTC’s impostor guidance also cautions that registration alone does not protect against fraud.
- Inspect what the offer asks you to do. Treat guaranteed returns, “send crypto to receive more,” urgency, and a demand for a fee or tax to release winnings as serious warning signs. A familiar face, copied logo, polished website, or claim of registration is not proof. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) crypto-scam alert and CFTC guidance describe these types of tactics.
- Protect your wallet and financial details. Never share a private key or seed phrase. Do not provide financial-account details to claim a reward, and do not send money to claim a prize. The CFTC says it does not request personal digital-wallet information and would never ask for private keys or seed phrases; see its impostor guidance.
- Stop if a warning sign appears. Do not click further links, connect a wallet, disclose information, or pay. If you have already replied or shared details, stop communicating and report the suspected scam through an official agency route.
Why a fee or tax to claim a prize is a stop sign
The FTC says never to send money or pay with cryptocurrency to claim a prize. A demand for a fee, tax, or other payment before a supposed reward is released is a strong warning sign—not a routine claim step. The FTC describes a pattern in which supposed winners are asked for fees or financial details, followed by further demands. See FTC guidance on “you’ve won” scams.

Do not send a small amount to test whether the offer is real. A demand for one payment can lead to additional demands, while sending crypto does not verify the organizer or guarantee that a reward will arrive.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you
- Official-channel confirmation: An independently found announcement is useful evidence that the organization acknowledges a campaign. It is not, by itself, a guarantee that every wallet interaction or token is safe.
- Search results and complaints: Reports can surface concerns, but the absence of complaints is not proof of legitimacy.
- Domain and business details: Inconsistencies are reasons to stop and investigate further. Plausible details do not prove the campaign is genuine.
- Registration claims: Registration is one check, not a fraud guarantee. Requirements vary with the activity, and the CFTC warns that registration alone does not protect against fraud.
No regulator’s general scam guidance can certify a particular reward campaign or determine whether a specific token or wallet interaction is safe. Legal status may depend on the campaign’s structure and the jurisdictions involved.

Where to report a suspected crypto rewards scam
Report a suspected prize scam to the FTC through its prize-scam guidance. Use official regulator websites rather than contact details supplied by the person who approached you. Be wary of anyone who then promises to recover lost cryptocurrency for a fee: the CFTC says it does not charge fees to investigate complaints or offer paid recovery of lost funds. See CFTC impostor guidance.
