Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor most long-lived application servers, use a connection pool instead of opening and closing a database connection for every request. A pool reuses established connections and helps control how many database sessions the application consumes. It does not make concurrency unlimited: connections still use database resources, and long transactions or session-specific behavior can keep them tied up. For serverless or highly bursty workloads, compare an in-process pool with an external pooler or managed proxy.
What changes when a request reuses a connection?
Opening a database connection can involve network and protocol setup, authentication, TLS negotiation when configured, and session initialization. Closing it ends that session. Repeating the process for every request adds setup and teardown work; AWS also identifies memory and CPU overhead from connection churn as a concern in its RDS Proxy concepts and terminology.
With a pool, application code borrows an available connection, performs its database work, then returns it for another unit of work. In the PostgreSQL JDBC pooling model, calling close() on the client-facing connection returns it to the pool rather than closing the underlying database session. That behavior depends on the pool implementation; it is not a universal property of every connection API. See the PostgreSQL JDBC documentation.
How the approaches compare
| Concern | New connection per request | Managed reuse |
|---|---|---|
| Connection setup | Repeats connection establishment and teardown for each request. | Amortizes setup across multiple units of work by reusing established connections. |
| Database sessions | Can create rapid connection churn and contribute to connection-slot exhaustion. | Can bound the number of sessions held by an application pool, but idle connections still occupy database slots. |
| Concurrency | Requests may compete for database resources as connections accumulate. | A bounded pool makes excess work wait for a connection; a queue can protect the database, but may add application-side wait time. |
| Failure handling | Each request attempts a fresh connection, but setup may fail under pressure or during outages. | The pool must detect and replace stale or broken connections; acquisition can time out if all available connections are in use. |
| Session behavior | Each connection starts a separate database session. | Session state can constrain which work can safely share or release a backend connection; external transaction pooling requires checking feature compatibility. |
The table describes general trade-offs, not a benchmark. There is no universal performance percentage or pool size established for all database engines, drivers, hosting arrangements, and workloads.

Why a bigger pool is not always faster
More open connections do not automatically increase throughput. At saturation, database work competes for resources, and performance can decline. The PostgreSQL Wiki’s discussion of the number of database connections describes limiting active transactions and queuing work as ways to manage contention.
A pool also introduces its own constraints: idle connections consume slots, a connection can become stale or broken, and separate pools may fragment demand so that one pool has idle connections while another has waiters. AWS notes workload considerations for its proxy in its application and workload guidance.

Configure a pool around the whole deployment
- Create the pool in the application’s database layer. Borrow a connection for the database unit of work and return it on both successful and error paths.
- Keep the borrowed period short. Finish the transaction promptly; do not hold a connection while making unrelated network calls or doing lengthy application work.
- Budget across every process. Multiply each process’s pool limit by the number of app instances, workers, pools, users, and relevant replicas. Compare that possible total with database capacity rather than judging a per-process setting alone.
- Watch both application and database signals. Track pool waiters, acquisition timeouts, acquisition time, active and idle connections, database connection counts, and idle-in-transaction sessions.
- Test under representative load. Measure request latency, transaction duration, concurrency, and connection waits on the actual stack. A connection wait can point to query saturation or locks, not only an undersized pool.
For PostgreSQL specifically, the server uses a process-per-user connection model: its supervisor starts a backend process when a connection is requested. This is a PostgreSQL 17 behavior, not a description of every database engine; see How Connections Are Established.
Choose where pooling happens
In-process pool
A pool inside a conventional, long-running application process is the natural starting point: each process borrows and returns connections through its database layer. Account for the fact that scaling out adds more pools and therefore can raise the deployment-wide maximum number of database sessions.

External PostgreSQL pooler
PgBouncer is an option when PostgreSQL applications need a separate pooling layer. Its pool mode matters: session pooling keeps a client associated with a backend for the session, while transaction pooling can return the backend after a transaction. Check whether the application depends on session features before selecting a mode. The PostgreSQL Wiki’s connection guidance discusses these pooling considerations.
Managed proxy
For AWS RDS or Aurora deployments experiencing connection pressure, RDS Proxy is one service-specific option. AWS says it pools connections separately for writer and reader instances and can multiplex completed transactions when session behavior permits it. Review the proxy behavior and workload considerations for the deployment; this is not a universal proxy recommendation.

Serverless and bursty workloads deserve particular attention because many short-lived application clients can arrive at once. An external pooler or managed proxy may let more clients share fewer database connections, but compatibility, failover behavior, operational burden, and service-specific costs vary. Verify those details for the database and provider in use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When opening a fresh connection may be appropriate
A fresh connection can make sense for a short-lived task or a system whose driver or hosting model already manages connection reuse elsewhere. The meaningful comparison is not merely “pool or no pool”: identify which layer creates and limits database sessions, how long each session remains open, and whether connections are reused safely. Avoid stacking pools and proxies without understanding where connections are held and which layer enforces the limit.

What to monitor when requests slow down
- Pool waiters and acquisition timeouts: determine whether requests are waiting to borrow a connection.
- Active versus idle sessions: check whether sessions are in use, merely occupying capacity, or unevenly distributed across pools.
- Transaction duration and idle-in-transaction sessions: find work that retains a connection longer than its database operations require.
- Database connection counts, query latency, and locks: a wait for a pooled connection may be a symptom of slow queries or lock contention rather than a pool limit that should simply be raised.
AWS identifies frequent opening and closing without pooling as “connection churn,” which can add authentication overhead and contribute to connection-slot exhaustion. On RDS for PostgreSQL, its initial troubleshooting guidance covers that failure pattern.
