To fix high memory usage on Windows, first identify which processes are using RAM in Task Manager. Close apps and tabs you do not need, reduce unnecessary startup and background activity, then restart and check whether the problem returns. High RAM use alone does not prove something is wrong; persistent slowdowns or a process that repeatedly grows are more useful clues.
Find out what is using memory
- Open Task Manager: Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Check Processes: Review the Memory column to see which running apps and processes are using RAM. Sort by that column if available.
- Check Performance: Select Performance, then Memory, for an overview of current memory use.
- Check Startup apps: Review which programs launch when you sign in; this can help identify background load you may not need.
Close apps you recognize and are not using. Do not end unfamiliar Windows processes just because their names are unclear; ending a system process can disrupt Windows or an app. Task Manager can display and manage processes and startup apps. Microsoft’s Task Manager guide explains its views and controls.
Reduce apps running in the background
- Close browser tabs and applications you do not need. Browsers and active apps can add to memory use.
- In Task Manager, disable startup apps you do not need immediately after signing in. Avoid disabling software you rely on or do not recognize.
- For apps that offer background-permission controls in Windows, set unnecessary background activity to Never.
- Restart the PC, then use it normally and see whether high memory use returns.
These steps reduce avoidable workload; they do not establish that any one app or setting caused the problem. Microsoft also recommends broader performance steps such as checking for updates, scanning for malware when appropriate, and restarting. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance covers these options.
Check for updates or malware when the cause is unclear
Check Windows Update for available updates, including optional driver updates if relevant. If you see signs of infection or unexplained resource use, run a scan with Windows Security. Updates and scans are reasonable troubleshooting steps for broader performance issues, but a high-memory reading by itself does not show that malware or an outdated driver is responsible.

Keep virtual memory on automatic management
The paging file is disk space Windows uses to support memory management; it is not additional physical RAM. If you want to check its setting, Microsoft’s troubleshooting path is:
- Open Control Panel, then select System.
- Open Advanced system settings.
- Under Performance, select Settings, then open the Advanced tab.
- Under Virtual memory, select Change.
- Confirm Automatically manage paging file sizes for all drives is selected, then apply the change and restart if directed.
Microsoft recommends this automatic setting when troubleshooting paging-file behavior. It is a sensible defaults check, not a guaranteed fix for high RAM use. Avoid choosing a manual page-file size as a generic solution. Microsoft’s paging-file guidance describes the setting.

Do not mistake low storage for high memory use
RAM and storage are different. Task Manager’s Memory view helps identify RAM use; Windows Storage settings show how much disk space files and apps occupy. Low disk space can slow a PC and make updates harder, but clearing storage does not identify which process is consuming RAM. Use Windows Storage settings to investigate disk space, not as a substitute for checking Task Manager.
Interpret the number in context
There is no universal percentage of memory use that proves a Windows PC has a problem. A computer doing substantial work may be using RAM for active apps and tasks. Focus instead on whether the PC slows down during your normal workload, whether Task Manager identifies a process using an unexpected amount, and whether the same problem returns after a restart.

Microsoft’s computer memory guidance says, “The more memory a device has, the more it can do at the same time without slowdowns in performance.” The page does not show a publication year. Its workload guidance gives these figures:
- At least 4 GB for primarily browsing the web, working on documents, or streaming online.
- 8 GB recommended to keep a device running long term.
- 16 GB or more may suit photo or video editing and other high-performance projects.

When a RAM upgrade may make sense
Consider more RAM only if the PC continues to slow down under your usual workload after you have checked for unnecessary apps and background activity. First confirm how much memory is installed and whether the exact computer can be upgraded. Manufacturers vary: memory may be replaceable or soldered, and a system supports only particular capacities and memory types.
- Check the PC manufacturer’s specifications for the exact model.
- Confirm supported capacity, memory type, and form factor.
- Verify whether the memory is replaceable before buying anything.
No particular RAM kit can be recommended without the PC model. A hardware upgrade will not diagnose or necessarily fix an app that repeatedly consumes more memory over time.

Microsoft describes Runtime Broker as a Windows 10 process that helps manage permissions for Microsoft Store apps. In its targeted support guidance, Microsoft says an app may cause Runtime Broker to use substantially more memory when RAM use is high and the PC is slow; it advises checking the process in Task Manager. That scenario-specific threshold is not a general alarm limit for every process or Windows version. If Runtime Broker repeatedly coincides with slowdowns, check which apps are running and use Microsoft’s Runtime Broker troubleshooting page.
When to seek app- or device-specific help
If one identifiable process continually grows or causes repeatable slowdowns, look for troubleshooting specific to that app and your Windows version. If memory use remains high during your ordinary workload and Task Manager does not reveal an app you can safely close, consult the PC manufacturer or a qualified technician with the computer’s model and installed-memory details.
