1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAs of October 3, 2026, the Cisco SD-WAN zero-day at issue is CVE-2026-76504. To check a deployment, identify the software release on every Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN Manager (formerly vManage) and compare it with Cisco’s first fixed release for that train. Cisco says the vulnerability affects Managers regardless of system configuration; for this CVE, Controllers, Validators, and edge routers do not need an upgrade. Confirm component compatibility before upgrading.
Cisco’s advisory, first published September 30 and last updated October 2, 2026, describes CVE-2026-76504 as an unauthenticated remote API authentication bypass caused by improper handling of URI encoding. A crafted HTTP request can bypass an authentication rule and provide API access with admin-user privileges. Cisco PSIRT became aware of active exploitation in September 2026. Cisco rates the vulnerability CVSS 9.8 (Critical); that score is a severity rating, not a count or measure of observed incidents.

Which Cisco SD-WAN components should you check?
Check every Catalyst SD-WAN Manager in the deployment, not just the Manager you normally use to sign in. Include each cluster member and Managers at both the primary and disaster recovery sites. The Manager’s installed release train determines the software check. Cisco’s advisory does not require upgrading Controllers, Validators, or edge routers for this specific vulnerability.
The issue is exposure-sensitive: Cisco says Managers exposed to the internet with exposed ports are at risk. On-premises operators should restrict access from unsecured networks and allow only known, trusted hosts through a filtering device such as a firewall. Cisco describes this as a temporary mitigation, not a fix; it may affect network functionality or performance, so assess local impact before changing access rules. Cisco says this mitigation is already deployed for cloud-hosted environments.

How to compare the installed release with Cisco’s fixed releases
Find the release running on each Manager, then use the row for that release train below. These are Cisco’s first fixed releases for the trains listed in its CVE-2026-76504 advisory:
| Manager release train | First fixed release | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Earlier than 20.9 | Migrate to a fixed release | Use Cisco’s fixed-release guidance and compatibility matrix to plan a supported migration. |
| 20.9 | 20.9.10.1 | Upgrade to this release or a later applicable fixed release. |
| 20.12 | 20.12.8.2 | Upgrade to this release or a later applicable fixed release. |
| 20.15 | 20.15.6.1 | Upgrade to this release or a later applicable fixed release. |
| 20.18 | 20.18.4.1 | Upgrade to this release or a later applicable fixed release. |
| 26.1 | 26.1.2.1 | Upgrade to this release or a later applicable fixed release. |
| 26.2 | 26.2.1 | Upgrade to this release or a later applicable fixed release. |
The advisory lists only these trains. If a Manager is on an unlisted train, do not infer from this table that it is either affected or fixed; consult Cisco’s live advisory and compatibility matrix. Cisco’s September 2026 remediation guide also says to remain within the current major release and not move to a higher major release without explicit TAC guidance.

Collect evidence, upgrade, and ask Cisco TAC to assess
Cisco’s preferred process preserves diagnostic data before the upgrade, closes the software vulnerability, and then has TAC review the evidence. Do not delay patching while waiting for scan results.

- Collect admin-tech bundles before upgrading. On every Manager, including all cluster members and Managers at primary and disaster recovery sites, run
request admin-tech. SelectLogandTech; Cisco saysCoreis not required. Preserve the resulting bundles for TAC review. - Upgrade all Managers. Upgrade each Manager to the first fixed release for its current train, using Cisco’s compatibility guidance. Avoid an unplanned major-release jump.
- Open a Cisco TAC case. Open a Severity 3 case with
CVE-2026-76504in the title and upload all collected admin-tech bundles. - Follow TAC’s environment-specific findings. If TAC identifies indicators, follow its guidance. Cisco says that if its scan finds none, no additional action beyond upgrading is required.
Cisco says TAC makes the official assessment determination. A preliminary review of logs can help identify evidence to share, but a clean manual check is not an official finding that a system was never compromised.
Manual log checks when admin-tech collection is not possible
Use manual checks only as a preliminary alternative to Cisco’s preferred admin-tech collection and TAC review. Review current and rotated logs on every Manager, including cluster members and disaster recovery Managers. One clue is an encoded character in a j_security_check request—for example, /%6a_security_check. Cisco notes that %6a is only an example; an attacker may encode any one character.

/var/log/nms/vmanage-server.log, look for encodedj_security_checkentries associated with usernames beginningviptela-reserved-. - Validate and record context: Compare source addresses with authorized vulnerability scans, penetration tests, and normal network operations. Record timestamps, source IPs, status codes, and related log entries, then share them with TAC. Cisco warns that some indicators can occur during standard operations, so a matching entry alone does not prove compromise.
Some logs are root-restricted and may only be available in generated admin-tech files. If a manual review is incomplete, treat that as a limitation—not as evidence that no suspicious activity occurred.
What the check can—and cannot—establish
The release comparison identifies whether a Manager is below Cisco’s listed first fixed release for its train. The upgrade closes the vulnerability according to Cisco’s remediation guidance; TAC’s review of collected data addresses whether indicators are present. These are different questions: installing a fixed release does not itself establish whether the system was accessed before patching.

Cisco’s consulted official sources do not state how many deployments have been affected, so the active-exploitation notice and CVSS score should not be used to infer prevalence or compromise of a particular network. TAC can scan for indicators associated with this vulnerability, but Cisco says TAC does not conduct in-depth forensic analysis. If a deeper investigation is needed, Cisco recommends a preferred third-party incident-response firm.
