To check whether a candidate’s campaign video, speech or ad was generated or manipulated with AI, start with its original source and context—not a visual “tell” or detector score. Find the earliest available version, verify the claim independently, check any provenance labels as supporting evidence, and confirm voting information with election officials. No single clue proves a clip is genuine or fake.
Start with the source and the full context
Before deciding whether media is authentic, work out who first published it and whether that account, campaign or outlet is genuine. A repost may omit the original caption, date, location or surrounding footage. Look for the complete recording or statement rather than relying on a short, cropped clip.

Verify the claim separately from the media
A real recording can carry a false caption, while a manipulated clip can include some accurate information. Check what the post actually claims, then compare that claim with credible independent fact-checkers and reliable primary sources. For an official statement, seek the candidate’s or campaign’s own channel and a full transcript or recording when available.

For claims about election dates, polling places, eligibility or voting methods, go directly to the relevant state or local election office. The FBI notes that states administer elections and that election laws vary. Do not rely on a viral post or a search snippet for instructions about how or where to vote. Treat visual artifacts as prompts, not proof
Unnatural hands, odd shadows, overly smooth skin or strange mouth movements may justify further checking, but none establishes that a clip was AI-generated. Generative tools have improved, and authentic footage can look unusual because of compression, editing, lighting or a misleading crop. The Brennan Center specifically cautions against spending time hunting for generic visual tells.

Use labels and provenance as supporting evidence
A platform disclosure or content credential may give useful information about a file’s origin or edits. But adoption is uneven, and credentials can be missing or invalid. Missing metadata does not prove a file is authentic—or manipulated. Treat a credible label as one piece of context, then continue checking the source and claim. AI-detection tools can make mistakes, and their reliability can change as generation and editing methods evolve. A score is not a verdict. If you use a detector, check whether it explains its limitations and makes its confidence level clear; weigh the result below stronger evidence such as the original source, full context and independent corroboration. Preserve and report content when there is a serious risk
If a post gives false voting instructions, threatens someone or otherwise suggests a crime, preserve the original communication before it disappears. Keep its URL, account name, date and time, and screenshots or recordings that show the surrounding context. Report suspected election crimes through the FBI’s guidance and consider using the platform’s reporting tools. If someone is in immediate danger, contact emergency services. The Department of Justice says preservation can help the FBI assess suspected criminal activity involving AI or other communications. Not every false or AI-generated political statement is automatically a federal election crime. The DOJ says generative AI use is not inherently criminal and is generally protected expression; AI may also be used to facilitate crimes such as threats, fraud or depriving people of the right to vote through disinformation about the time, place or manner of elections. A practical check before you share
- Pause. Be especially cautious with sensational allegations, emotionally charged material or urgent voting instructions.
- Find the earliest available version. Identify the original publisher and look for the complete clip, statement or official source.
- Check the claim independently. Use credible fact-checkers for claims and election-office sources for voting details.
- Review labels and credentials. Record what a label says, but do not treat its presence or absence as conclusive.
- Use detectors only as an extra clue. Do not let a detector override stronger evidence.
- Preserve and report if warranted. Save the original link and context before reporting a suspected threat, voter suppression or other crime.
The FBI’s core advice is simple: “Always consider the source of voting information. Ask yourself, ‘Can I trust this information?’” FBI election-crimes and security guidance.
