To see the servers a particular message passed through, inspect its full headers. Neither check lists every company that may store, filter, forward, or otherwise process your email; for that, check the account’s settings and the provider’s privacy, data-processing, and subprocessor disclosures.
What an email address can—and cannot—tell you
In [email protected], the domain to check is example.com. A free address using a well-known email service’s own domain often gives you a useful clue about the service, but a custom-domain address can use a separate email host.

Do not assume the email host is the company that registered your domain, hosts your website, manages your DNS, or supplies your mail app. Those can be different services. For a custom domain, follow its mail-related DNS records rather than inferring the host from a brand name elsewhere.
Check the domain’s MX records
An MX, or mail exchange, record tells other mail servers where to send incoming email for a domain. It identifies the configured public inbound destination—not every company involved in handling mail. Cloudflare describes the record’s purpose in its MX record guide.

Run a DNS lookup

Identify the part after the
@in the address. For[email protected], queryexample.com. -
On a system with
dig, rundig example.com mx +short. Replaceexample.comwith the domain you are checking. Cloudflare documents this command in its email troubleshooting guidance. -
Note the returned mail-server hostnames and their priorities. Compare the exact results with the current setup instructions from the suspected email provider. Do not identify a provider from a hostname alone if the value is unfamiliar or the configuration is unusual.

You can also use a DNS lookup service or inspect the domain’s DNS control panel. The DNS provider is not necessarily the email provider: the DNS zone can be managed by one company while its MX records point to another company’s mail servers.
Interpret the results carefully
Provider examples help illustrate what to compare, but they are not a universal or permanent directory of mail hosts. Cloudflare’s Google Workspace setup instructions list Google mail exchangers including aspmx.l.google.com and four alt hosts; its Microsoft 365 setup instructions use a domain-specific mail.protection.outlook.com target. Check the provider’s current instructions and your domain’s actual records rather than treating these examples as exhaustive.
Keep priorities when recording multiple MX entries. Multiple results may be part of a provider’s intended configuration or reflect more than one mail-related service; the hostnames alone do not establish the purpose of every entry. Cloudflare also notes that Google Workspace MX records and Cloudflare Email Routing cannot coexist on the same domain because both require control of MX records.

Inspect a message’s route in its full headers
MX records show the domain’s configured incoming route. A message’s full headers show technical details about that particular message, including the sequence of servers recorded in its Received lines. That is evidence about the message you inspect, not a complete inventory of services processing the account or proof that every message follows the same route.

Receivedlines. Google’s full-header instructions also describe using Google Admin Toolbox Messageheader to analyze a copied header.
Open full headers in Outlook
Microsoft’s Outlook instructions describe different paths by version: in new Outlook, use View > View message details; in classic Outlook for Windows, use File > Properties. See Microsoft’s instructions for viewing internet message headers.

Headers can expose email addresses, routing details, timestamps, and other metadata. Avoid pasting them into an unrelated public analyzer. If you use an analyzer, consider the privacy implications and prefer a tool recommended by your email provider.
Understand what SPF and DKIM results mean
Headers may include an Authentication-Results field with SPF or DKIM results. These are clues about message authentication, not evidence of a complete hosting or processing inventory. Google explains how to check Gmail authentication results and cautions that authentication alone does not guarantee delivery in its authentication guidance.
Find the other services involved
MX and a sample header cannot establish every company that may handle email. Depending on the account and configuration, other services may be involved in forwarding, filtering, archiving, outbound delivery, or organization administration.

Review forwarding, routing, filtering, and archive settings available to you or your organization’s administrator.

Check the provider’s privacy notice, data-processing terms, and current subprocessor disclosure.

Confirm which region, plan, and organization-admin settings apply to the account. The processing relationships can depend on all three.

A public DNS lookup or one message’s headers cannot substitute for account-specific settings and provider disclosures when you need a fuller list of processors.
If you are choosing or changing an email host
Compare services on the dimensions that affect your setup, rather than treating every product described as “email” as the same thing.

Follow the new provider’s current DNS instructions for the exact records to add or change. Replacing MX records changes where incoming mail is directed, so plan the transition—including user setup—before making the change. Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance and Microsoft’s Cloudflare-to-Microsoft 365 setup instructions provide provider-specific examples.
