Review the usage breakdown for Google Photos, Gmail, and Drive. Select a service or cleanup category to inspect suggested items before deleting anything. Google says Storage Manager shows usage for each service and links to ways to free space (Google Drive Help).

Google’s account help describes storage as shared across Google Drive, Google Photos, and Gmail (Manage your Storage). Personal accounts commonly have up to 15 GB, but that is not guaranteed for every account: memberships, promotions, and managed work or school accounts can have different limits (Google Account Help; Google Drive Help).

On iPhone or iPad
Google documents an app-based route for iOS: open Drive, Photos, or Gmail, choose Manage storage, then tap Usage details to view service totals. Labels and availability can vary by app and account; this documented path is specific to iOS (How your Google storage works).
What can count toward your Google storage
The Storage Manager’s service totals are more useful than adding up visible files yourself. Google’s rules include several kinds of data and historical exceptions (How your Google storage works):

Google Photos: Photos and videos backed up in Original quality count. Storage saver (previously called High quality) and Express quality backups made on or after June 1, 2021, count as well. Google’s stated policy excludes earlier High quality or Express backups, but not all content uploaded before that date; for example, older inactive photo libraries backed up in Original quality can still use storage.

Gmail: Messages and attachments count, including items in Spam and Trash.

Google Drive: Drive files and certain collaborative files can count. Rules for some collaborative content depend on when files were created or edited around June 1, 2021.

Other eligible data: Meet recordings, Android backup data, and WhatsApp backups on Android may also use storage.

Google says files shared with you generally count against the original owner’s storage. A copy you make, files you add to someone else’s shared folder, or a transfer that makes you the owner can instead affect your own quota (Google Drive Help).
When the Storage Manager total does not match what you see
Drive for desktop and your computer’s disk show different things
Cloud quota is not the same as local disk space. Streamed Drive files may use little space on your computer while still counting toward cloud storage. Mirrored files can occupy local disk, while shared files owned by someone else generally do not count against your cloud quota (Google Drive Help).

The Drive file list is only part of the account total
Gmail, Photos, trash, hidden app data, pinned file versions, and eligible backups can contribute, so sorting Drive files by size will not explain every account’s full usage (Google Drive Help).
Deleted items or recent cleanup may still appear in the total
Items in Gmail Spam or Trash continue to count until permanently cleared. After deleting many files, Google advises allowing up to 48–72 hours for storage figures to update; the displayed total may not change immediately (Google Drive Help; Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos).
Work or school account: check the managed quota
Workspace storage limits can depend on your organization’s license or administrator settings. For an overview of Drive usage and a largest-to-smallest list of Drive files, open drive.google.com/drive/quota while signed in. If the limit is unclear or appears different from what you expect, ask your administrator; a personal-account allowance may not apply (Google Workspace Learning Center).

Google says reaching the storage limit can prevent new Drive uploads or file creation, Photos backups, and sending or receiving Gmail messages (Manage your storage in Drive, Gmail & Photos). In Storage Manager, inspect the service breakdown and review suggested items. Permanently empty Gmail Spam or Trash only after checking that you do not need those messages. If you want more capacity rather than deleting content, Google One is one option; available plans and storage amounts depend on the account and region (Google Drive Help).
Google says it might delete content if an account remains over quota for two years, subject to its policy and notices. Treat that as a possible consequence of staying over quota, not as a routine cleanup grace period (Google Drive Help).
