To find out what your smart glasses collect and where it goes, identify the exact model and companion-app version, then check the app’s privacy, camera, voice, activity-log and cloud-media settings. The key distinction is whether you are taking an ordinary photo or video, importing it to your phone, or asking an AI feature to interpret what the camera sees: those actions can have different data paths. Ray-Ban Meta provides a documented example, but settings and behavior vary by model, feature and region.
Start with the exact glasses, app and region
Before interpreting a privacy control, write down the glasses’ model and generation, the companion app and its version, and the country or region where you use them. Feature availability, setting names and indicator behavior can differ. The details below use Ray-Ban Meta as an example; they should not be assumed to describe other brands or every Ray-Ban Meta model.

In the companion app or product information, identify your model and generation. Then open the app’s settings or privacy area and look for controls related to glasses privacy, Meta AI, camera use, voice, activity log, notifications and cloud media. The exact menu route may change, so use the current app labels and the product’s current regional documentation.

Do not treat all camera use as one kind of recording. For Ray-Ban Meta, the documented paths differ depending on what you do:

Review privacy, voice and deletion controls
- Open the companion app’s settings or privacy area. For Ray-Ban Meta, inspect controls for Meta AI, camera use, voice, notifications and cloud media. Meta says capture, voice, notification and shared-information preferences can be managed in the Meta AI app. Meta’s AI-glasses privacy information
- Separate camera capture from AI camera use. Check whether you are saving media to the gallery, asking an assistant to analyze what you see, or enabling a cloud-media option. A setting that affects one path should not be assumed to disable the others.
- Check voice and follow-up behavior. Review whether voice control and continued conversation are enabled, and whether the app exposes voice activity. The UK FAQ’s description of a brief listening window applies to the documented follow-up feature; verify the setting and disclosure for your own version and region. Ray-Ban’s UK FAQ
- Inspect the activity log and deletion options. Ray-Ban says users can view voice activity in the activity log and download data. Meta says voice recordings can be deleted and deleted information will not be used for future training. Check the current app for the exact route and what each deletion option covers. - Repeat the check after app or feature changes. A changed setting label or newly available feature can alter what is enabled; consult the current documentation for your model and region.
Do not use the capture light as a complete privacy test
The capture LED is a bystander cue, not a comprehensive indicator of every data flow. Meta describes it as signaling photos and videos captured for the gallery. Ray-Ban says newer models may use the camera for AI without illuminating the capture LED, while first-generation Ray-Ban Meta glasses still illuminate it during some AI features because of hardware limitations. Therefore, a dark LED does not necessarily mean the camera is not being used for an AI interaction, and an illuminated LED alone does not tell you where captured media goes. Meta also says second-generation glasses disable the camera when a covered LED is detected and that it is updating safeguards against physical tampering. This is a stated safeguard, not a reason to treat the light as a full data-flow monitor. Meta’s camera and capture information

Understand what happens after cloud processing
For the AI camera feature, Ray-Ban’s FAQ says the image sent to Meta’s cloud is stored and used to improve Meta products and train Meta AI with trained reviewers. Do not assume those terms apply to every photo or every glasses feature: the gallery-storage path and AI-processing path are described separately. Meta Engineering describes a separate Private Processing architecture for AI-glasses workloads, using confidential virtual machines and encrypted transfer with isolated processing. Use a practical audit for any smart-glasses brand
For another manufacturer, check its own app and current privacy documentation rather than borrowing Ray-Ban Meta’s settings or claims. Look for these points:
- What starts photo, video or voice capture, and whether voice has a follow-up listening window.
- What stays on the glasses, what transfers to a phone, and what is sent to a cloud or AI service.
- Whether AI features use images or audio, and what the company says about retention, product improvement or human review.
- Where activity logs are available, what can be downloaded or deleted, and the scope of deletion.
- What the camera or recording indicator signals—and which uses it does not signal.
- Whether settings or features differ by model generation or region.
Respect people nearby
A recording indicator cannot tell bystanders everything about processing, so do not rely on it as a substitute for consent or good judgment. Meta recommends asking permission before capturing others and avoiding places where people expect privacy. In an Associated Press report dated October 5, 2026, Norway’s government was proposing a temporary ban in some settings, including places where privacy is particularly important; that report described a proposal, not an enacted general rule.
