Before authorizing a UPI payment, verify the recipient and the final amount on the last payment or merchant checkout screen. Check for any separately listed fee; if its amount or basis is unclear, stop and ask the merchant or the app’s official support channel before entering your UPI PIN.
What to check on the payment screen
- Verify the recipient. Make sure the name or account shown is the person or merchant you intend to pay.
- Compare the amount. Check the final total against the amount you expected to pay. A different total may include a separately displayed charge.
- Read each additional line item. Look for labels such as platform fee or convenience fee. Note the amount, who the screen identifies as charging it, whether it is included in the checkout total, and whether an explanation is shown.
- Decide before authorizing. If you do not understand an extra amount, do not enter your UPI PIN or otherwise approve the payment yet. Ask the merchant or contact the relevant app’s official help channel.
UPI apps and merchant checkouts do not necessarily use the same confirmation layout or display fees in the same way. A label alone does not establish what kind of charge it is or whether it is permitted.

What the rules establish—and what they do not
Section 10A of the Payment and Settlement Systems Act states that “no bank or system provider shall impose, whether directly or indirectly, any charge upon a person making or receiving a payment by using the electronic modes of payment prescribed under section 269SU of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (43 of 1961).” Read section 10A in the India Code text of the Act.

That provision is specifically about charges imposed by a bank or system provider on a person making or receiving payment through the prescribed electronic modes. It should not be expanded into a blanket conclusion about every merchant checkout fee, app convenience fee, or separately named charge. The sources cited here do not establish that every such charge is treated alike, or that all apps and merchants must display fees in a uniform way.

A Ministry of Finance answer to Lok Sabha question 4111, answered on 18 August 2025, refers to UPI transactions being facilitated by NPCI and to the 2019 section 10A provision. It is dated government context, not an exhaustive current list of charges shown by every app or merchant. Read the Ministry of Finance answer.

Reviewing the amount before approval is separate from checking whether a payment went through. NPCI says UPI is an instant payment system and advises customers who have not received confirmation within an hour to contact their bank. Keep the transaction reference and use your bank’s or app’s official support channel to clarify the status. See NPCI’s UPI FAQ.
