When access is enabled, open the submitted draft in Turnitin and review the highlighted matches and sources—not just the percentage.
Can you see a Turnitin report before the deadline?
It depends on how the instructor configured the assignment. Turnitin may make a report visible as soon as it is generated, delay student access until after the due date, or keep it unavailable to students. The instructor may also allow or prevent resubmissions. Check the assignment instructions or ask your instructor whether you may submit a draft, whether you can see its report, and whether you can replace the draft afterward. How to open and inspect a report
In the Turnitin Feedback Studio iOS app
- Open your class and choose the assignment.
- Tap View Submission.
- In the Turnitin Viewer, tap Similarity and turn on the report to inspect matches.
- Select a highlighted match to see its details. Use View Details to open the full source view.
These button names and steps are documented for the iOS app; other versions and learning-management-system integrations may look different. If your screen does not match, follow your school’s instructions or ask your instructor where reports appear. Turnitin’s student workflow guide covers the iOS steps.
What the similarity score tells you
The score is the percentage of your writing that matches material in Turnitin’s internet, database, or student-paper sources. It identifies text for review; it does not decide whether plagiarism occurred. Turnitin puts it plainly: “Turnitin does not check to see if a piece of work is plagiarized or not.” Turnitin’s student report guidance explains how to interpret the report.

A match may be a properly quoted passage, a correctly cited source, or bibliography material, as well as text that needs correction. Open the source and read the matched passage in context. Check that quotations are marked and cited, paraphrases are genuinely in your own words and attributed, and sources follow the citation style your instructor requires. Do not treat a particular percentage as a universal pass mark or rewrite solely to make the score smaller.
Why the score can change with filters
Reports can include or exclude quotations, citations, or bibliography material, depending on the filters applied. These settings are usually controlled by educators during assignment setup, so the score may differ depending on what the instructor has included. If you are unsure how to interpret a match or score, ask which filters were applied and follow the course’s academic-integrity rules. Turnitin’s student guide describes these filters.

What to do if the report is missing
- Check the assignment’s access timing. The report may be hidden until the due date or not made available to students. Ask your instructor to confirm the setting.
- Allow time for processing. A report may still be generating. Turnitin’s guidance says a new report after an overwritten or resubmitted paper may take a full 24 hours; this is product guidance, not a guarantee for every integration. Turnitin’s student guidance covers report access, and its resubmission guidance addresses processing time.
- Confirm whether resubmission is allowed. If the assignment prevents another submission, you may not be able to upload a revised draft yourself. Ask your instructor how to proceed rather than creating another submission or account.
- Use your school’s interface instructions. Turnitin’s documented steps vary by platform and integration; if the expected controls are absent, contact your instructor or institution’s support team.
How to use the report to revise responsibly
Review each match, verify quotation and citation practices, and revise passages that do not accurately represent or credit their sources. Turnitin advises limiting quotations to significant material, summarizing or paraphrasing appropriately, and citing evidence in the required style. If a match leaves you uncertain, discuss it with your educator rather than trying to evade detection.
