For a dated history of upload and download traffic, use vnStat. It records received (RX), transmitted (TX), and combined totals in five-minute, hourly, daily, monthly, and yearly buckets. For an immediate cumulative reading, use the Linux kernel counters with ip -s -s link show dev <interface>.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
These are measurements from the VPS guest operating system. Your provider’s dashboard remains the authority for billing because it may use a different reset date, direction rule, overhead treatment, or set of exclusions. Use the local figures to investigate and forecast usage, then compare them with the provider’s current bandwidth policy.

First decide which “total” you need
Bandwidth questions usually refer to one of two different measurements:
- Guest-interface total: RX (bytes received by the VPS) plus TX (bytes transmitted by the VPS), as seen by Linux on one network interface.
- Provider-billable transfer: the quantity your VPS company uses for an allowance or invoice. Its accounting can differ from the guest counter.
Linux can show the first measurement directly. vnStat also separates RX, TX, and total, making it possible to see whether a spike came mainly from downloads, uploads, or both. Neither method automatically proves what a provider will charge.

Find the VPS network interface
Every command in this guide needs the interface that carries the VPS’s external traffic. Names vary with the operating system image, kernel, and virtualization platform. Common names include eth0, ens3, and ens4, but your server may use another provider-assigned name.
List interfaces
Run:
ip link show
This lists the interfaces known to iproute2. Look for the ordinary Ethernet-like device that is up and has the VPS’s route to the Internet. The loopback device, normally named lo, is internal and should not be used for measuring external transfer.
Recommended Free Tools
Confirm the interface used for the default route
If several devices are present, inspect the route table:
ip route
The line beginning with default identifies the path used for ordinary Internet destinations and includes a device name. Use that device for the first measurement. A VPS can have additional interfaces for private networking, storage, or management; counting one of those alone will not represent public traffic.
Record the name exactly
Interface names are case-sensitive. Copy the name from the command output and substitute it for <interface> in the commands below. If a provider replaces a virtual NIC, the name or its traffic history may change, so keep the interface name alongside any records you export.
Read the kernel’s cumulative counters
For a quick snapshot, run:
ip -s -s link show dev <interface>
In the output, find the statistics block for the selected device. The RX row contains received bytes; the TX row contains transmitted bytes. These counters accumulate at the interface level rather than representing a particular month.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhat the counters are good for
- Taking a baseline before and after a backup, migration, update, or load test.
- Checking whether traffic is increasing even when no historical monitor was installed.
- Comparing two readings manually by subtracting the earlier RX and TX values from the later values.
What the counters cannot provide
- They do not contain a built-in calendar breakdown for the current month or previous months.
- A reboot, interface reset, virtual-machine migration, or replacement of the network device can reset or change the counters.
- The values are not automatically aligned with your provider’s billing cycle.
For a dated record, save the timestamp, interface name, RX byte count, and TX byte count whenever you take a reading. Do not compare readings from different interfaces as though they were one continuous counter.

Install and initialize vnStat for persistent history
vnStat is designed to collect traffic statistics with low overhead. It reads the Linux proc or sys interface statistics and stores time buckets for later queries. Package names, service activation, and interface-initialization behavior differ between distributions, so use the package manager and service conventions for the distribution running on your VPS.
Install the distribution package
- Identify the VPS distribution and its supported package manager.
- Install the package named
vnstat, or the distribution’s equivalent package name. - Follow that distribution’s instructions for enabling and starting the vnStat service or collector.
- If the package does not automatically create a database for the network device, add the selected interface using the initialization procedure documented by that package.
Do not assume that installing the binary alone has started collection. The historical database must be populated over time, and a collector must continue running for new buckets to be recorded.
Verify that the selected interface is being tracked
After installation and initialization, query the interface explicitly:
vnstat -i <interface>
A newly initialized database may contain little or no history. That is expected: vnStat cannot reconstruct traffic from before it began collecting. Check again after traffic has been observed and enough time has passed for the relevant bucket to be created.
Use one interface consistently
vnStat keeps statistics per interface. If your VPS has public and private devices, initialize and query each one separately when you need a complete guest-level total. Add the RX and TX totals from the interfaces that are genuinely part of the traffic scope you are measuring. Do not add the loopback interface to an Internet-transfer total.
Read today’s and this month’s totals
Show vnStat’s default summary
Run:
vnstat
When no interface is specified, vnStat can select the interface with the highest total traffic. That is convenient on a single-NIC VPS, but it can be ambiguous on a multi-interface machine. For repeatable reports, specify the interface:
vnstat -i <interface>
Interpret the summary fields
The documented summary separates received, transmitted, and combined values for the current day, the current month, and all time. Read the row matching the period you need rather than treating the all-time figure as this month’s usage.

| Field | Meaning | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| RX | Bytes received by the interface | Downloads, inbound requests, replicas, and other incoming traffic |
| TX | Bytes transmitted by the interface | Uploads, responses, backups, and other outgoing traffic |
| Total | RX plus TX for the displayed period | Guest-interface transfer when both directions count |
| Today | Traffic in vnStat’s current calendar-day bucket | Checking activity since the day boundary |
| Current month | Traffic accumulated in the current calendar-month bucket | Comparing with a monthly allowance |
| All time | Traffic retained in the database across recorded periods | Long-term trend checks and database validation |
vnStat displays quantities using units such as MiB, GiB, or TiB. Keep the unit attached to every value when copying it into a spreadsheet or alert. A total shown in GiB is not interchangeable with a provider’s decimal-GB figure without checking the provider’s unit convention.
Produce a compact, script-friendly line
On versions that support it, run:
vnstat --oneline
The documented one-line output includes today’s RX, TX, and total, the current month’s RX, TX, and total, and all-time RX, TX, and total. It is useful for a monitoring script or a periodic log because the output is compact. Check the exact field order and separators on the vnStat version installed on your VPS before writing a parser; do not assume every release formats the line identically.
Use vnStat’s time resolutions to locate a change
vnStat records several resolutions: five-minute, hourly, daily, monthly, and yearly. The appropriate view depends on the question:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Five-minute buckets: identify the approximate start of a short burst.
- Hourly buckets: correlate transfer with a scheduled job, deployment, or backup window.
- Daily buckets: compare recurring workload days and find an unusual day in the month.
- Monthly buckets: measure progress toward a monthly allowance.
- Yearly buckets: review seasonality and long-term growth.
Calendar boundaries matter. “Current month” means the month represented by vnStat’s local time and database, while a provider may reset an allowance on a different date or time zone. If your allowance runs from the 15th to the 14th, use daily records to add that custom period instead of reading the calendar-month row as an exact billing total.
Inspect a live spike with real-time mode
When the monthly number jumps, take a short live sample:
vnstat -tr
vnStat’s real-time mode samples current traffic and reports rates and packet counts. It does not rely on the historical database, so it can still help diagnose activity before a new installation has accumulated history.
Use the sample as a diagnostic, not a monthly total
The command reports what happened during its sample window. A high instantaneous rate does not by itself indicate high monthly usage, and a quiet sample does not erase an earlier burst. Repeat the sample at different times and correlate the result with application logs, scheduled jobs, backups, package mirrors, or other workload events on the VPS.

Choose the correct interface first
Run real-time mode against the interface carrying the traffic you are investigating. If your installed vnStat version supports an interface selector with real-time mode, use the explicit interface form; otherwise confirm which interface the default selection uses before interpreting the result.
Account for multiple interfaces and virtualized traffic
A VPS may expose more than one network device. A public interface, a private network, and a management interface can each have independent counters. Decide whether your question concerns:
- Only Internet-facing traffic on the public interface.
- All traffic crossing every guest interface.
- A provider-defined transfer category that may exclude private traffic or treat it separately.
For a guest-level RX-plus-TX total, collect the relevant vnStat totals for each included interface and add them once. Avoid double-counting traffic that is bridged, mirrored, or passed through another virtual device. The provider’s dashboard may use host-level measurements that do not map one-for-one to a guest interface, so a difference is not automatically evidence that either side is broken.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare local usage with the provider’s allowance
Before deciding that you are over or under an allowance, record the provider policy details:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- The reset date and time zone.
- Whether the allowance counts RX, TX, or both.
- Whether traffic between VPS instances in the same network is included.
- How IPv4, IPv6, backups, snapshots, control-panel actions, and network overhead are treated.
- Whether the displayed value is live, delayed, estimated, or finalized.
- The units used by the dashboard and any rounding rules.
Then compare like with like. For example, add the appropriate daily vnStat values for the provider’s billing window instead of comparing an entire calendar month with a mid-month allowance. Keep the provider’s reading and your local reading in separate columns; do not overwrite one with the other.
Why numbers can disagree
- Different windows: the local calendar month and the provider’s reset period do not start on the same day.
- Different directions: the provider may count only one direction while vnStat’s total adds both.
- Different scope: local statistics cover a guest interface, while the provider may account at the host or service level.
- Different units or rounding: decimal and binary prefixes can produce visibly different displayed numbers.
- Interface changes: traffic may have moved to a newly named device whose database is separate.
- Counter or collector gaps: a reboot, service outage, or uninitialized interface can leave local history incomplete.
Use the provider policy as the billing authority and vnStat as operational evidence for finding the cause of usage.
Set a threshold without confusing it with billing
vnStat supports comparisons for RX, TX, total, or estimated usage and supports units including MiB, GiB, and TiB. This lets you check whether a locally observed total has reached a chosen threshold.
Best Value
Choose the threshold
- Write down the provider’s allowance and reset date.
- Choose whether the threshold is RX, TX, or RX plus TX.
- Use the same unit convention and leave a safety margin for differences between guest statistics and provider accounting.
- Configure the threshold using the alert or limit features available in your installed vnStat version.
Because command-line options and configuration formats can differ by vnStat release and distribution package, verify the syntax locally with the installed manual and configuration examples. A threshold is an operational warning; it is not a guarantee that the provider will report the same figure.

Troubleshoot missing or surprising results
vnStat shows no data
- Confirm that the package’s collector or service is running according to your distribution’s service system.
- Check that the interface was initialized for vnStat.
- Verify that you queried the same interface carrying traffic.
- Allow time for the first historical bucket to be collected; vnStat cannot create history for time before installation.
The monthly total is zero, but the VPS is active
Check the interface name and query it explicitly with vnstat -i <interface>. A default query can select a different interface when several exist. Also check whether the database started after the traffic you expected to see.
The total is much lower than the provider dashboard
Confirm the billing window, direction rules, units, and included traffic categories. Check every relevant guest interface and look for a period when the collector was stopped. If the provider measures traffic outside the guest, a persistent difference can be a scope difference rather than a Linux error.
The total is unexpectedly high
- Run
vnstat -tron the suspected interface to see whether traffic is currently active. - Inspect daily and hourly buckets to identify when the increase began.
- Correlate that time with backups, replication, software distribution, public downloads, logs, or a misconfigured service.
- Check RX and TX separately; the direction often identifies whether the VPS is serving data or receiving it.
- Compare the event with the provider dashboard using the same date range.
Values changed after a reboot or migration
Re-read the interface list and default route. A virtual NIC can be renamed or replaced, and kernel counters can restart. Treat the new interface as a new measurement series unless your vnStat database and provider records clearly establish continuity.
You cannot run the command as an unprivileged user
Read the permission error and follow your distribution’s package and service setup. The required access can depend on how the collector database and service were installed. Do not loosen file permissions broadly just to make a report run; preserve the package’s intended ownership and service model.

For automation, vnstat --oneline provides compact fields where supported. Store the raw line, timestamp, interface name, and vnStat version so that a later format change or interface replacement does not make the history ambiguous.
Which method should you use?
| Need | Use | Limitation |

No calendar history; counters can reset or change with the interface |
| Monthly and yearly history | vnstat -i <interface> |

| Compact monitoring output | vnstat --oneline |
Confirm field order and support in the installed version |
| Live investigation | vnstat -tr |
A sample rate is not a period total |
| Final billing answer | Provider dashboard and policy | May not match guest-interface measurements exactly |
Bottom line
Install and keep vnStat collecting on the VPS interface that carries your traffic, then read the current-month Total field for RX plus TX, with RX and TX available when you need direction-specific analysis. Use ip -s -s link show for an immediate kernel-counter snapshot and vnstat -tr for a live spike. Treat the provider’s own dashboard and accounting policy as the final answer for billable bandwidth.
