To host an Arma 3 A3Wasteland server, install the free Arma 3 dedicated-server package with SteamCMD, configure the server with server.cfg, expose a reachable IPv4 game port, and install an A3Wasteland mission PBO that matches your map and branch. A3Wasteland is mission content, not a second server executable.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Arma 3 servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The reliable order is: choose self-hosting or managed hosting, install and update the dedicated server, create a separate profile and configuration, forward the required ports, copy in the mission release, add persistence services only when your chosen fork requires them, then test with clients on the same Stable or Development branch.

What an A3Wasteland server actually contains
An Arma 3 server has two separate layers. The dedicated-server executable runs the game service. A3Wasteland supplies the mission, usually as a PBO or release containing the mission files and any required dependencies. Installing one does not install the other.
Your final installation therefore needs:
- The Arma 3 dedicated-server files installed and updated through SteamCMD.
- A server profile containing
server.cfg, logs and related settings. - A startup command that selects the profile, configuration, port and any required mods.
- An A3Wasteland mission release copied to the server’s mission-content location and selected in the mission cycle or server configuration.
- Firewall and router rules that allow public clients to reach the chosen IPv4 port and the associated Steam query traffic.
Persistence is optional at the base-game level. Some A3Wasteland forks add a separate statistics or database service, Node.js and an Arma extension; install those components only when the fork’s own documentation requires them.

Self-hosted dedicated server
Self-hosting gives you direct access to files, startup flags, logs and background services. You are responsible for SteamCMD updates, firewall rules, port forwarding, operating-system updates, backups, BattlEye settings and recovery when the process stops. A Windows Server machine or a modern Linux host is suitable.
Managed hosting
A managed host can handle much of the operating system and network administration through a control panel. Before paying, confirm that the provider supports Arma 3 dedicated servers, lets you select the A3Wasteland map and fork you need, and permits any Node.js, statistics service or Arma extension required for persistence. Support for ordinary Arma 3 does not prove support for a particular A3Wasteland persistence stack.

|---|---|---|
| Control | Full access to files, startup flags, logs and services | Depends on the provider’s panel and policy |
| Administration | You handle SteamCMD, updates, ports, backups and security | The provider handles much of the infrastructure |
| Cost shape | Hardware or VPS cost plus your operating time | Recurring hosting fee |
| Persistence | Flexible; you can run a required Node.js/statistics stack | Must verify extension and service support before ordering |
Hardware baseline
The current Bohemia Interactive dedicated-server guide lists a minimum of a 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU, 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of HDD storage. Its recommended row is a 3.5 GHz quad-core CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a 32 GB SSD. These are published server requirements, not a guarantee of a particular player count or frame rate; mission complexity, mods and operating-system load still matter.
The dedicated-server package is free and does not require purchasing the regular Arma 3 client. You still need a host with a stable public network path and enough storage for the server, profiles, logs, mission files and backups.
Decide these details before installing
Map and mission fork
A3Wasteland releases are not interchangeable. Altis, Tanoa, Chernarus and other variants can have different filenames, dependencies and persistence requirements. Select the map and a maintained release first, then follow that release’s exact installation notes. Treat a map variant as separate content rather than assuming an Altis package will load on another terrain.

Stable or Development branch
Choose one update branch for the server and all clients. Bohemia Interactive’s guide states that only Development clients can connect to a Development server and only Stable clients can connect to Stable servers. Branch mismatches can look like mission, mod or network failures, so establish the branch before troubleshooting anything else.
Public IPv4 reachability
Arma 3 does not support IPv6 or DS-Lite IPv4 delivered through an IPv6 tunnel for public hosting. If your connection has no real public IPv4 path, a local server may run but internet clients will not be able to reach it reliably. Use a host or network service that supplies reachable IPv4.
Accounts and permissions
Create a dedicated operating-system service account for the server. On Linux, run the game process as that non-root account. The official documentation also recommends a separate Steam account for dedicated-server installation and warns against mixing server data with a full client installation.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
- Create separate locations. Make one directory for SteamCMD itself and another for the Arma 3 server data. Keeping the installer, executable, profiles and mission files separate from a desktop Arma 3 client avoids accidental file mixing.
- Install SteamCMD for your operating system. Use the platform’s current SteamCMD package and place it in the dedicated installer directory.
- Authenticate with the server account. Use the separate Steam account recommended for dedicated-server installation rather than the account used for playing on a desktop.
- Download or update the Arma 3 dedicated-server app. In SteamCMD, select the dedicated-server application and direct its files to the server-data directory. Run the update again whenever you deliberately update the server branch.
- Confirm the executable. Linux installations use the 64-bit platform executable shown in the official example,
arma3server_x64. Windows installations use the corresponding Windows server executable. - Keep the service account as the owner. The account that launches the server must be able to read the executable and mission files and write its profile, log and save locations.
Do not copy a complete client installation over the dedicated-server directory. A clean server directory makes branch changes, backups and diagnosis much safer.
Create a safe starting server.cfg
Start with a small configuration, replace the example secrets and add advanced options only after the basic server works. The following fields are shown in Bohemia Interactive’s configuration example:

kickDuplicate |
Handles duplicate player identities | Keeping it enabled prevents a second connection with the same identity from remaining in the session. |
The configuration does not install a mission or select a map by itself. Mission selection still has to reference the exact A3Wasteland release and terrain you installed.
Choose and expose the network ports
Select a game port
Choose the game port with the startup parameter -port=<number>. Record that number before creating firewall and router rules so every layer uses the same value.
Forward the game and query traffic
Allow the selected game port through the host firewall and forward it from the router to the server’s private address. Also forward the associated Steam query ports required by your deployment. The exact query-port arrangement depends on your host and startup configuration, so verify the values exposed by the server process rather than opening an arbitrary range.
Prefer explicit forwarding over blind UPnP
Do not enable UPnP automatically on an internet-facing server. The official guide warns that UPnP can delay startup on hosts with active firewalls or anti-DDoS measures. Manually defined firewall and router rules are easier to audit, document and remove.

Testing only from the same LAN can produce a false positive because some routers support local reflection while others do not. Check the server browser or connect from a separate network, such as a mobile hotspot, after the process is running. If the server is absent, check IPv4 reachability, the selected -port, host firewall, router forwarding and whether another process already owns the port.

Install the A3Wasteland mission
- Choose the release. Select a maintained A3Wasteland repository or release that names the map and features you want. The original Altis project describes A3Wasteland as a survival sandbox where two teams and independent players fight for survival.
- Read its dependency list. Note the exact PBO filename, terrain, required addons and any launch-time mod parameters. A mission built for one map or fork may not appear when copied to another map’s location.
- Copy the mission content. Place the selected mission PBO or release in the server’s mission-content location, preserving the filename and directory layout required by that release.
- Reference the mission. Add the exact mission name to the server’s mission cycle or equivalent configuration. Do not substitute a similar-looking filename; the map and mission identifier must match.
- Install required mods consistently. If the release requires signed addons or client-side mods, install the same compatible versions on the server and provide clients with the same requirements.
- Restart and inspect the log. A successful startup should load the terrain and mission without missing-addon, PBO or signature errors.
When a mission is not listed, check all four identifiers together: the PBO filename, the terrain, the mission-cycle entry and required addons. A correctly copied file can still be hidden if the mission-cycle name or map is wrong.
Add persistence only for a fork that supports it
“Persistent A3Wasteland” is not a universal switch. A base mission may run without an external database service, while a persistence-enabled fork can require additional software. The Sock.Chernarus fork documents a stack consisting of Node.js, the sock-rpc-stats package and an Arma extension named sock.dll on Windows or sock.so on Linux.
- Confirm that your selected fork explicitly requires the persistence stack.
- Install the Node.js version and package specified by that fork.
- Place the matching statistics package and Arma extension in the locations required by the release.
- Run the statistics service under a controlled service account and make its endpoint reachable by the Arma process.
- Start the service before the game server, then check both service logs for connection or permission errors.
- Run a controlled save test, restart the server and verify that the fork restores the expected state.
Do not copy a DLL or shared object from an unrelated fork. Native extensions are version- and fork-dependent, and a mismatched file can prevent the mission from loading or make persistence silently fail.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Launch the server
The official Linux example is:
./arma3server_x64 -name=server -config=server.cfg
On Windows, use the corresponding server executable with the same logical options. Add the profile, port and mod parameters required by your installation. If you use automatic initialization, keep persistent = 1 in the configuration as shown in the example documentation.
Launch from the server-data directory or provide absolute paths so the executable can find the profile and configuration consistently. Run the process under the dedicated service account, not as root. For a long-running host, use the operating system’s service or supervisor facility so the process can restart after a crash and start automatically after a reboot.
Best Value
Verify the first start in a deliberate order
- Check process startup. Confirm that the executable remains running and binds the intended game port rather than exiting immediately.
- Read the console and log. Look for configuration parse errors, missing addons, PBO failures, signature errors and port-binding failures.
- Confirm the mission. The selected map and A3Wasteland mission should appear without a missing-content message.
- Test external visibility. Use a client outside the host’s LAN and verify that the server appears or accepts a direct connection.
- Join with a matching branch. The client must be on Stable when the server is Stable, or Development when the server is Development.
- Test administration. Confirm that the administrator password works and that BattlEye and signature checks behave as intended.
- Test persistence separately. On a persistence fork, create a known state, stop cleanly, restart the external service and server, then verify restoration.
Security and maintenance settings
Protect credentials
Change the sample administrator password before opening the port. Keep configuration files readable only by the service account and trusted administrators. Do not reuse the password for Steam, the operating system or a statistics service.

Keep BattlEye and signatures enabled
For a public server, enable BattlEye and use verifySignatures = 2. If a legitimate player is rejected, compare the server and client mod versions and inspect the signature error instead of weakening verification globally.
Back up the parts that matter
server.cfgand any mission-cycle configuration.- The selected A3Wasteland PBO and its dependency list.
- Server profiles, logs and administrator notes.
- Persistence-service configuration and data when a fork uses Node.js or statistics storage.
- Firewall, router and startup parameters, documented outside the host as well as on it.
Before updating the branch or mission, stop the server cleanly and make a dated backup. Keep the previous known-good mission and configuration until the new version has passed a join and persistence test.
Troubleshoot by symptom
The server does not appear in the browser
- Confirm that the host has a real public IPv4 route; IPv6-only and DS-Lite IPv4-over-IPv6 paths are unsupported for public hosting.
- Check that
-port=<number>, the host firewall and router forwarding all use the same game port. - Allow the associated Steam query ports and verify that another service is not using them.
- Test from outside the local network.
- Remove blind UPnP dependence and create explicit forwarding rules.
Clients are rejected for signatures
- Compare the client’s branch with the server’s branch.
- Compare every required mod and version, including signed addons.
- Read the server log for the filename that failed verification.
- Keep
verifySignatures = 2on a public server while correcting the content mismatch.
The A3Wasteland mission is not listed
- Confirm that the PBO is in the mission-content location required by the release.
- Check that the mission-cycle entry uses the exact filename.
- Verify that the selected terrain matches the mission.
- Install every required addon and use the release’s stated launch parameters.
- Restart and read the log for missing-addon or PBO errors.
The process exits during startup
- Check configuration syntax and the path supplied to
-config. - Check for a port already in use or a firewall policy that blocks binding.
- Confirm that the service account can write the profile and log locations.
- Remove newly added mods or extensions one at a time to identify a faulty dependency.
Persistence does not save
- Confirm that the selected fork actually implements persistence and documents an external service.
- Check that Node.js,
sock-rpc-statsand the correctsock.dllorsock.soare installed when required. - Start the statistics service before the Arma server and inspect both logs.
- Verify file permissions, endpoint settings and that the extension matches the fork and operating system.
- Perform a controlled save-and-restart test instead of assuming that a successful mission load proves persistence.
Players report high ping or odd browser behavior
Recheck the host’s public route, forwarding and firewall state, then consult the official troubleshooting notes. Those notes include a warning that running Steam as a non-administrator can affect some configurations; apply that advice only where it matches your operating system and symptom.
When managed hosting is the better choice
Choose self-hosting when you need unrestricted access to startup flags, custom mission files, logs or a persistence service and are comfortable maintaining the machine. Choose managed hosting when reducing operating-system, network and backup work is more important than full control. In either case, the decisive compatibility questions are the same: can the host run your exact A3Wasteland map and fork, expose the required IPv4 ports, keep the correct branch, and support any documented persistence extension?
A host’s claim that it supports Arma 3 is not enough evidence for a particular A3Wasteland release. Ask for confirmation of the exact mission, map, mod policy and persistence components before migrating an established server.
A repeatable update routine
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Back up configuration, mission files, profiles, logs and persistence data.
- Record the current branch, startup command and working mission version.
- Update the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD on the same branch.
- Update the A3Wasteland mission only when its release notes and dependencies are compatible.
- Start the server in a test window and read the log before inviting players.
- Join with a client on the same branch and mod set.
- For persistence forks, verify a save survives a controlled restart.
- Keep the previous backup until the new build has operated normally.
Following that sequence keeps the executable, mission content, network settings and persistence services independently testable. Most failures then point to one layer instead of requiring a complete reinstall.
