To check whether Windows Backup is done, open the Windows Backup app from Start or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup and review its current status and selected items. If you use OneDrive folder backup, also confirm syncing has finished and that important files are visible and openable in the same OneDrive account. An enabled backup setting alone does not prove every file has uploaded.
What Windows Backup covers—and what it doesn’t
Windows Backup can sync selected folders, including Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos and Music, to OneDrive. It also handles selected settings and app-related information as separate categories. It is not a complete copy of every file, installed program, app database or disk partition. Check Microsoft’s Windows Backup guidance for the consumer workflow and its current scope.

The Windows Backup app is intended for consumer devices signed in with a personal Microsoft account; Microsoft says work or school accounts do not work with this app flow. If this is a work-managed PC, ask your IT team which backup process applies instead of assuming a personal OneDrive setup is sufficient.

- List the files you need. Check the selected standard folders and note important files stored elsewhere, such as on another drive or inside an app-specific data folder. Those locations may not be included in Windows Backup.
- Review Windows Backup’s status. Search Start for Windows Backup and open the app, or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup. Inspect the current state and expand the relevant sections to confirm the folders and settings you intend to preserve are selected and shown as backed up.
- Check OneDrive’s sync state. If you use OneDrive folder backup, open OneDrive from its cloud icon in the taskbar notification area. Go to Sync and backup > Manage backup and check that the intended folders are included. Microsoft says files are backed up and accessible once syncing finishes; resolve any pending or failed sync before resetting. See Microsoft’s OneDrive folder-backup instructions.
- Verify files at the destination. Sign in to OneDrive with the same Microsoft account used for Windows Backup. Find several important files and open them. Seeing them there confirms those examples are accessible from the destination; it does not verify files in folders you never selected.
Check storage and make a separate copy where needed
Microsoft’s current Windows Backup guidance says a free Microsoft account includes 5 GB of OneDrive storage; additional storage is available to purchase. If the account lacks enough space, backup may not work as expected. Check the available storage and make sure the files you need fit.

For important files outside the selected OneDrive folders—or as an independent second copy—copy them to an external drive and verify that they are present there. Microsoft lists external drives as a backup destination, but does not establish a particular capacity or model recommendation in the cited guidance. OneDrive and an external drive have different dependencies: OneDrive requires the account and completed sync, while a local drive is a separate physical copy. Either way, verify the files at the destination.

Confirm which reset option you plan to use. Microsoft’s reset guidance explains that resetting reinstalls Windows and can remove data depending on the choice: Remove everything removes personal files, apps and settings, while Keep my files still removes apps and settings. Back up important files before proceeding.

If device encryption is enabled, have the BitLocker recovery key available before starting. Microsoft includes this in its reset preparation guidance. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to that guidance; support status is time-sensitive for PCs that still run Windows 10.
