Firefox is the strongest all-around starting point for customization; Waterfox is a configurable Gecko alternative with documented built-in blocking; Mullvad Browser is the specialized choice for reducing tracking and fingerprinting, at the cost of persistent sessions and some site compatibility. Floorp is another customization-focused candidate, but the available official information here is not detailed enough to rank its privacy protections confidently.

Firefox: the practical choice for customization
Firefox offers customization at several levels: rearrange toolbar items, change settings, install add-ons, and apply themes. Advanced users can make deeper changes through about:config or by editing userChrome.css and userContent.css. Mozilla warns that these advanced methods are unsupported and can cause unexpected behavior, break the browser, or be affected by updates. Keep changes understandable and reversible if you rely on them.

Privacy protections do not mean that no information is processed. Firefox blocks several categories of known tracking technologies, while Mozilla’s privacy notice, effective May 4, 2026, explains that technical and settings data are processed to provide browser functionality and describes connections related to search suggestions and update checks. Waterfox: built-in blocking with extension trade-offs
Waterfox describes itself as a privacy-focused, customizable browser based on Gecko. Its policy says new profiles use DNS over Oblivious HTTP by default and that ad and tracker blocking is built in, using bundled filter lists. Those lists may become outdated, so a built-in blocker is not a guarantee that every current tracking method is blocked.

Waterfox does not require extensions to be signed. That can offer flexibility, but it also makes extension choice important: an add-on’s own permissions, behavior and privacy policy govern the data it can access. Mullvad Browser: stronger anti-tracking, less persistence
Mullvad says it developed its free, open-source browser with the Tor Project to minimize tracking and fingerprinting. Its defaults favor a more uniform browser profile, intended to make a user resemble a larger group, and discard cookies and browsing data when the session ends. Stronger security settings can disable some site features and cause functionality to break, according to Mullvad’s hard-facts page, last updated January 13, 2026. What a VPN does—and does not do
Mullvad Browser can be used with or without Mullvad VPN. A VPN can mask your IP address from websites and services you connect to, while browser protections address other tracking and fingerprinting vectors. A VPN alone does not defeat browser fingerprinting, and a privacy-oriented browser is not by itself a complete anonymity guarantee. Mullvad’s browser overview

Choose by the trade-off you can live with
- Choose Firefox if you want substantial customization within a familiar mainstream browser and are willing to keep advanced tweaks maintained.
- Consider Waterfox if you want a Gecko alternative with built-in blocking and are prepared to review filter lists and extensions carefully.
- Choose Mullvad Browser if reducing tracking and fingerprinting is more important to you than keeping sessions and getting frictionless compatibility everywhere.
- Investigate Floorp if customization is the priority, but check its current privacy and update documentation before treating it as a privacy-first pick.
