Check the LED above the Steam button. Its color shows the connection route, while a breathing or pulsing pattern indicates charging. The indicator also warns when the battery is very low, but Valve’s official references do not document an exact battery-percentage display.
How to check whether the Steam Controller is charging
Look at the LED above the Steam button while the controller is connected. A breathing or pulsing light means it is charging; the color identifies the connection route Valve associates with that state.

|---|---|
| White breathing or pulsing | Charging through the Steam Controller Puck connection. |
| Blue breathing or pulsing | Charging over Bluetooth. |
| Green breathing or pulsing | Charging over USB. |
| Orange breathing or pulsing | The controller is not communicating for input but is still charging; it is not yet full. Valve says this can occur over USB or Puck. |
| Solid white, blue, or green | The corresponding connection is working, and the controller is not charging. A solid connection color is not a charge gauge. |

What the low-battery light means
| LED state | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Dark red, solid | Valve says less than one hour of battery remains. | Connect the controller to charge. Valve says you can continue playing while it charges. |
| Dark red, double-pulse | The battery is too low to power on. | Charge the controller before expecting it to start. |
The one-hour figure is Valve’s low-battery warning, not a precise remaining-time estimate for every use. The LED reference does not provide a battery percentage or a way to calculate one from the light.

Can you see the exact battery percentage?
Valve’s official LED reference and 2026 troubleshooting guide explain charging patterns and low-battery warnings, but do not document a specific percentage readout or an on-screen location for one. So, based on those references, you can confirm charging and recognize the documented low-battery states, but you should not rely on an unverified menu path or infer a percentage from LED color or brightness.

If the LED does not show charging
- Check whether the LED is breathing or pulsing; a solid white, blue, or green light indicates an active connection, not charging.
- If the light is orange and breathing, the controller is charging even though it is not communicating for input.
- If the light is dark red, follow the low-battery meaning for its pattern: solid means less than one hour remains; a double-pulse means the controller is too low to power on.
