Mars does not turn entirely blue at sunrise or sunset. Fine dust in its atmosphere scatters blue light so it stays concentrated near the Sun, while yellow and red light spread farther across the sky. The effect is clearest near the horizon, where sunlight passes through a longer stretch of atmosphere.
Why blue gathers around the Sun
NASA attributes the blue twilight region to fine Martian dust. Mark Lemmon, a Texas A&M University scientist on the Curiosity mission team, explains that the dust is the right size for blue light to pass through the atmosphere somewhat more efficiently than longer-wavelength colors. When that blue light scatters off dust, it remains closer to the Sun’s direction; yellow and red light scatter more widely across the sky. NASA’s sunrise and sunset explainer describes this contrast.

Near sunrise and sunset, sunlight travels through more of the atmosphere than it does when the Sun is high overhead. That longer path makes the color separation more noticeable. NASA’s Curiosity sunset account notes that the blue is most prominent in twilight conditions.

No. The blue is concentrated around the Sun; it does not describe the entire sky. Farther from the Sun, the sky can look yellow to orange as those colors spread more broadly. The reddish daytime appearance and blue near-solar twilight are compatible because they refer to different parts of the sky and different lighting conditions.

Dust levels and illumination affect how vivid the effect looks. NASA notes that reduced dust can mute the usual blue sunset color, so not every Martian sunset image has the same saturation. NASA/JPL’s Curiosity image account provides context for one such observation.
How to interpret Mars sunset photographs
Photographs are not all raw, identical records of what an unaided observer would see. NASA says the InSight sunrise and sunset images captured on April 10, 2022, were color-calibrated to approximate how the scene would look to human eyes on Mars; NASA describes blue near the Sun with purple or gray tinges. See NASA’s InSight image description.

For Curiosity’s sunset sequence, NASA says the images were calibrated and white-balanced to remove camera artifacts. Mastcam renders color similarly to human vision but is slightly less sensitive to blue. The sequence spans 6 minutes and 51 seconds, as described in NASA’s Curiosity account. When comparing images, check which part of the sky is shown, the dust and lighting conditions, and how the image was calibrated or white-balanced.
Other details that shape the view
The Sun looks smaller
Because Mars is farther from the Sun than Earth is, the Sun appears about two-thirds the size it does in Earth’s sky, according to NASA’s explainer.

Twilight can linger
Dust high in Mars’s atmosphere scatters sunlight around to the planet’s night side. NASA says a fading twilight glow can remain visible for up to two hours after sunset or before sunrise. This is an upper limit reported in NASA’s sunrise and sunset explainer, not a guarantee for every location or observation.

No: the blue near the Sun is attributed to Martian dust, not water-ice clouds. NASA’s Pathfinder-era explanation says the color becomes apparent near sunrise and sunset, when light passes through the greatest amount of dust. See JPL’s Pathfinder description of Martian color variations.
