On Windows, open Task Manager → Performance → Memory to see reported speed, slots used, and form factor. On a Mac, check System Information → Hardware → Memory for upgradeability. On Linux, use sudo dmidecode --type memory to inspect firmware-reported module and socket details. These screens can identify what the system reports; they do not, by themselves, prove that an empty slot can accept an upgrade.
Check RAM on Windows
Quick view in Task Manager
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Performance, then Memory.
- Read the displayed speed, slots used, and form factor, if shown. These are system-reported details, and available fields can depend on the device and its firmware. Windows Central’s Windows guide notes that Task Manager may not identify the DDR generation, so do not infer DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5 from speed alone.
Inspect module-level fields with PowerShell
Open PowerShell or Windows Terminal and run:
Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_PhysicalMemory |
Select-Object DeviceLocator, Capacity, SMBIOSMemoryType, ConfiguredClockSpeed, Manufacturer, PartNumber
Microsoft describes Win32_PhysicalMemory as a physical memory device, with properties including capacity, device locator, manufacturer, part number, raw SMBIOS memory type, and configured clock speed. DeviceLocator is a firmware-reported socket or board location. SMBIOSMemoryType is a numeric type code, not a friendly DDR label. ConfiguredClockSpeed is the configured memory clock speed reported through SMBIOS; it can be zero when unknown. Values can be missing, unknown, or inaccurate if the firmware does not report them correctly. See Microsoft’s Win32_PhysicalMemory documentation and the property reference.

Installed, usable, and available memory are different
Windows system information and memory views may distinguish installed physical memory from the amount usable by Windows after hardware or firmware reservations, and from memory available at that moment. The last figure changes as programs use memory; it is not a count of empty RAM slots. You can also open System Information by running msinfo32 to view system and hardware details or create a report. Microsoft’s System Information instructions describe that utility.
Check RAM on a Mac
- Hold Option while opening the Apple menu, then choose System Information.
- Under Hardware, select Memory.
- Check the Memory Slots pane and its Upgradeable Memory field. Apple says that if the Memory Slots pane does not appear, upgradeable memory is unavailable for that Mac.
Use the service information for your exact Mac model before attempting any hardware work. Apple’s instructions are in About This Mac and System Information.
#1 Best Overall
- A-Tech 16GB RAM Module, DDR4 SO-DIMM 260-Pin, 3200MHz PC4-25600 (PC4-3200AA)
- Non-ECC Unbuffered, JEDEC DDR4 Standard 1.2V Operating Voltage
- Compatible with select Laptop, Notebook, Mini PC, and All-in-One (AIO) systems. Please verify your system's memory type, form factor, and maximum supported capacity before purchasing
- Not compatible with desktop DIMM, non DDR4 memory, or ECC memory types such as RDIMM, LRDIMM, and ECC UDIMM
- Increases available memory capacity to enhance system responsiveness, application performance, and multitasking capabilities.
For current memory use rather than upgradeability, open Activity Monitor and select its Memory pane. Apple explains that the memory-pressure graph reflects free memory, swap rate, wired memory, and file-cached memory. It describes how memory is being used, not whether a physical socket is empty. See the Activity Monitor User Guide.
Check RAM on Linux
Run this command in a terminal:
sudo dmidecode --type memory
The memory keyword covers DMI types 5, 6, 16, and 17. Type 16 describes the Physical Memory Array; Type 17 describes a Memory Device. The output may include installed-module and socket information as reported by the system firmware.

- Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
- Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
- Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
- Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
- ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8
Treat the result as firmware-reported inventory, not a guarantee of upgrade support. The dmidecode manual warns that data may not be reliable when the BIOS uses a newer SMBIOS specification the tool does not support.
What speed, type, and available slots actually mean
- Speed: A displayed configured speed is not necessarily the advertised rating of a memory kit. On Windows,
ConfiguredClockSpeedis the SMBIOS-reported configured clock speed and can be unknown. - Type: “Type” may mean DDR generation (such as DDR4 or DDR5), physical form factor (such as DIMM or SO-DIMM), or a software category. Check what the specific screen or field means; Windows’ raw SMBIOS type is numeric, and Task Manager may not show generation.
- Slots used or available: These counts reflect what a tool or firmware reports about devices and sockets. An apparently empty slot does not establish that the computer supports adding memory. Some systems use soldered memory or have model-specific restrictions.
- Available memory: This is memory free for use at the moment, not an empty physical socket. Runtime memory-use tools answer a different question from system inventory or upgradeability views.
Check compatibility before buying RAM
Identify the exact computer model, then confirm its specifications and service instructions before choosing a module. Firmware inventory is useful, but it is not proof that a particular purchase will work.

- Confirm the supported DDR generation and module type.
- Check whether memory uses DIMM, SO-DIMM, or soldered chips.
- Find the maximum supported capacity and permitted module sizes.
- Verify whether the computer has a user-accessible slot and whether an actually usable slot is free.
- Check supported speed and any configuration requirements.
If the manufacturer’s documentation confirms removable memory and a supported configuration, then look for a compatible RAM upgrade kit for that exact model. Do not choose a module based only on an empty-slot reading or a speed number.
