Valve’s rating describes the expected experience on Steam Deck; ProtonDB can show how the game behaves on particular Linux systems and Proton versions. Neither is a guarantee for every setup.
Check the game’s Steam Deck rating
- Find the exact Steam game entry. Search the title in Steam and confirm you have the right game or edition. Reports for a different edition or app entry may not describe the version you plan to install.
- Open the Steam Store page or Steam Deck Library entry. Look for the compatibility badge, then open its details when available. Valve’s program reviews games for the Deck and displays a rating in the Deck Library. Valve’s Steam Deck Verified page explains the program.
- Read the explanation, not just the badge. Valve evaluates input, display and legibility, how seamlessly the game works, and system support. When a game uses Proton, the criteria also consider whether the game and its middleware work through Proton. A title can launch yet still have usability caveats.
What each label means
- Verified: The game met Valve’s Steam Deck review criteria.
- Playable: The game can be used on Deck, but may have caveats or require configuration. Read the details to see what to expect.
- Unsupported: Valve found that the game does not meet the expected Steam Deck experience.
- Unknown: Valve has not tested the game for compatibility. This is not evidence that it fails.
The ratings summarize the expected Deck experience, not performance on every desktop Linux PC. A non-Verified result does not, by itself, tell you whether the game works on your particular Linux setup. Valve’s Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide provides further compatibility information.

Look for recent ProtonDB reports
ProtonDB collects community-submitted reports about playing games on Linux and Steam Deck with Proton. Search for the game by title, or use its ProtonDB page. Valve’s Proton wiki also points players to these reports and documents the app-page format: https://www.protondb.com/app/<appid>. These are player observations, not Valve certifications.

Prioritize reports that include the information you need to judge whether they apply to you:

- Platform and hardware: Is the report from a Steam Deck or a desktop Linux PC? For desktop reports, note the distribution and hardware if provided.
- Date: Is the report recent enough to reflect the current game and software? Game, middleware, Proton, and SteamOS updates can change results.
- Proton version: Which version or compatibility tool did the player use?
- What actually happened: Did the game launch and play normally, or were there crashes, broken online features, or smaller visual and input problems?
- Workarounds: Did it work by default, or only after changing settings or using a launch option? Decide whether that extra work is acceptable.
ProtonDB aggregates individual experiences. An older successful report may not reflect a current game patch, and another player’s result may not reproduce on your machine. Valve describes ongoing work to improve the Deck and keep ratings current, but does not establish a fixed re-review schedule on the cited program page.
Resolve conflicting reports before downloading
When one player says a game works and another reports a problem, compare like with like rather than relying on an aggregate badge alone. Start with reports from the platform you intend to use. Then compare their dates, hardware, Proton versions, and the seriousness of the issue. A game that launches with a minor input problem is a different prospect from one that will not launch or has broken online features.

Also distinguish a default experience from a result that depends on a workaround. If the report does not identify its system, Proton version, or steps taken, it may be less useful for predicting your own result. Compatibility can change as games and software are updated, so treat both the official rating and community reports as evidence tied to a particular time and setup.
Change the compatibility tool only when troubleshooting
Steam offers a per-game setting to force a particular Steam Play compatibility tool. This is a troubleshooting option, not a compatibility certification. If the game is installed and you want to test a tool, use Steam’s documented settings:

- Open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties, then choose Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select a listed tool and test the game.
Steam Support warns that forcing a tool can make Steam download the Windows version if only the Linux version is installed. Check which build Steam selects after changing the setting. The procedure and caveat are documented in the Steam Deck software and troubleshooting guide.
