Check the NFL’s official inactive listing and the player’s team updates about 90 minutes before that player’s scheduled kickoff, then make any needed lineup change before the applicable fantasy lock. Because games start at different times, check again for each game rather than relying on one early scan.
When do NFL teams announce inactive players?
NFL Fantasy Support says teams designate players inactive about 90 minutes before a game is scheduled to start. Kickoffs are staggered, so a player in an early game and one in a later game will have different announcement windows. A weekly injury report can help you identify uncertain starters, but an injury designation is not the final inactive report.

Where to check for the official status
- Open the NFL.com Inactives page near the player’s game time: NFL.com Inactives. It is the starting point for official reports. The page may not yet show reports for the current slate; when the retrieved page displayed “Please check back soon for NFL Inactive Reports for this Season,” that indicated reports were not available in that view, not that a particular player was active.
- Check the player’s team updates if the league listing has not populated. Team announcements can provide a timely confirmation for that team’s game.
- Use a fantasy news tracker for context. ESPN Fantasy’s inactive coverage posts updates and player-impact analysis as official lists arrive and advises readers to refresh for updates. Its analysis can help answer “Whom should you start? Whom should you sit?” but treat it as context and confirm the status in an official listing when possible.
How to make the lineup change safely
- In your fantasy app, open the lineup for the affected matchup and locate the inactive player.
- Choose an eligible bench player for the open roster slot. Check that the replacement has not already played and fits the slot under your league’s roster rules.
- Save or confirm the change before the affected player’s game begins and before your league’s applicable lineup lock.
Lock timing depends on the platform and league. NFL Fantasy’s rules tie a player’s status change to the scheduled start of the player’s team as determined by NFL.com’s clock; that timing describes NFL Fantasy, not every fantasy service. NFL Fantasy offers an Auto-Swap Inactives setting. NFL Fantasy Support says it benches players projected for zero points and starts the highest-ranked player on the user’s backups list. The feature “never touches anyone else on your roster,” according to that support page. Enable and rank backups ahead of time if you plan to use it, and verify the settings in your league. Do not assume another platform has the same feature or behavior.

A practical game-day checklist
- Before game day, flag questionable or otherwise uncertain starters from the weekly injury report.
- About 90 minutes before each relevant kickoff, revisit the official inactive listing and team updates.
- Refresh a fantasy tracker for player-specific context, but use an official source to confirm the designation where available.
- If a starter is inactive, swap in an eligible player before that game and your league’s lineup lock.
- If you cannot monitor kickoff, set up any available auto-swap or backup-ranking feature in advance.
