A new budget phone usually means less uncertainty about battery wear and prior damage, while an older flagship may be the better fit if you value a specific camera, display, processor, or build feature—and the phone still has enough security support left. Compare current prices at the same storage level, then include likely repair costs, warranty coverage, and return terms.
When a new budget phone makes more sense
- You want a new-device warranty and a battery without unknown prior wear.
- You prefer to avoid uncertainty about a used phone’s damage, repairs, or refurbishment quality.
- The older flagship’s remaining security support is too short for how long you plan to keep your phone.
- The budget model has the features you actually use, so paying extra for the older phone’s premium hardware would not benefit you.
When an older flagship may be the better buy
- You specifically value a feature on that model, such as its camera system, display, processor, or materials.
- Its exact model and region have enough security support remaining for your intended ownership period.
- The price advantage remains after accounting for possible battery replacement or repairs.
- The seller provides credible condition information, written warranty terms, and a useful return window.
Do not rely on the phone’s former flagship status: check the actual model’s camera configuration, screen, storage, performance, and network-band compatibility for your carrier.

Compare the two actual offers
Use the same storage capacity where possible, and compare the full cost rather than the headline price.

How to assess a refurbished phone
Refurbished can mean different things depending on the seller. Consumer Reports recommends checking the inspection and restoration process, whether the battery was replaced, which accessories are included, and whether the parts are manufacturer-supplied (Consumer Reports, updated April 18, 2025).

For example, Samsung’s U.S. Certified Re-Newed program describes a certified new battery, genuine Samsung parts, a 147-point quality test, and a one-year limited manufacturer warranty. Samsung states: “Every Certified Re-Newed smartphone comes with a one-year limited warranty, just like our brand new smartphones.” Those are terms of Samsung’s own program, not a guarantee for third-party marketplace listings. Its catalog lists Galaxy S23, S24, and S25 series variants, but inventory and visible prices can change; check the selected SKU and current terms on Samsung’s U.S. Certified Re-Newed page.
Google’s official search-result information for its Certified Refurbished Pixel store describes genuine OEM parts for screen or battery replacements, a one-year limited warranty equivalent to a new device, and support matching new owners’ commitment of up to seven years. The direct page redirected to a region picker when accessed, so verify the current offer, model coverage, and terms for your region before relying on them: Google Store Certified Refurbished Pixel phones.

Make the final call
- Pick the two exact models and offers, including storage, seller, and region.
- Check each model’s current manufacturer support schedule and compare time remaining with your expected ownership period.
- Inspect condition and refurbishment details, especially battery, repairs, replacement parts, warranty, and returns.
- Add likely repair or battery costs to the older phone’s price and compare the resulting totals.
- Choose the older flagship only if its particular features matter to you and its support, condition, and protections justify the cost. Otherwise, the new budget phone is the lower-uncertainty choice.
