To check storage on a MacBook Air, open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage on macOS Ventura 13 or later. On an earlier macOS version, go to Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Review the categories, remove or relocate files you recognize, empty Bin or Trash if you deleted anything, then return to Storage to see the updated figures.
Open the Storage view for your macOS version
Apple’s Storage view groups what is using your Mac’s disk into categories and can show additional cleanup options. The labels and controls can vary by macOS version.

Storage categories are a way to locate potential targets, not a direction to delete everything in a category. Use the options below to decide whether to remove something, keep it elsewhere, or leave it on the Mac.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
| Choice | What it does | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Delete | Removes a file or app you no longer need. Files in Bin or Trash still occupy storage until you empty it. | Items you are sure you do not need. |
| Move to external storage | Keeps files while moving them off the Mac. Apple specifically mentions large media files and Photos or iMovie libraries. | Files you want to retain but do not need stored locally. |
| Use iCloud options | Can keep some files, photos, videos, messages, and attachments in iCloud, with local storage optimized as needed. This uses the capacity in your iCloud plan. | Items you want available through iCloud and can access over the internet when needed. |
Apple’s storage recommendations may offer controls for large files, downloads, apps, device backups, Mail junk, and deleted items. Review each item before removing it. To keep large files without using Mac storage, choose an external storage drive; specific drive compatibility and performance depend on the product and setup.
Delete files carefully and empty Bin or Trash
Remove only files and apps you recognize and no longer need. Deleting a file does not necessarily release its disk space immediately: Apple notes that a file moved to the Bin does not free storage until the Bin is emptied. On Macs or localized interfaces that call it Trash, the same principle applies. Apple’s file deletion instructions explain the process.

- Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Before emptying Bin or Trash, check that it contains nothing you want to restore. Then return to the Storage view and let it update before judging the result.
Understand Apple’s automatic storage recommendations
Depending on your macOS version and available options, the Storage view may offer recommendations that reduce local storage use:
Rank #3
- NEARLY 2X FASTER THAN OUR PREVIOUS GENERATION(8) – move 1,000 high-res photos in under 60 seconds(6) with up to 2000MB/s transfer speeds(2).
- IP65 RATING AND UP TO 3M DROP PROTECTION(3) – protects against spills and drops.
- POCKET-SIZED – fits easily in pockets and small bags.
- SPACE TO OWN YOUR AI CONTENT – speed and capacity to download your high-res clips and photo edits.
- 256-BIT AES ENCRYPTION(4) – helps keep private files secure with password protection.
- Store in iCloud: Desktop and Documents files, photos, videos, messages, and attachments can be stored in iCloud, with local copies optimized when space is needed. The space available in iCloud depends on your plan; cloud capacity is separate from the Mac’s built-in storage.
- Optimize Storage: macOS can remove watched Apple TV content and keep only recent Mail attachments on the Mac when space is needed.
- Empty Bin automatically: macOS can remove Bin or Trash items that have been there for more than 30 days. This is a setting’s described behavior, not a guarantee that any particular amount of storage will be recovered.
These options can change what remains available locally or how long a deleted item stays recoverable. Review the choices in Storage before enabling them. Apple’s overview of storage recommendations describes these features.
Why storage categories may not add up cleanly
System Data or Other
System Data is a broad category for files that do not fit more specific categories; some macOS versions may label it Other. It can include logs, caches, virtual-memory and temporary files, fonts, app support files, plug-ins, and other runtime resources. Apple says macOS manages these contents and that the category varies with the Mac’s current state. It is not a single folder to empty manually. Avoid deleting unknown system-managed files; Apple’s guidance on finding and deleting files explains the category.

Free space versus available space
Apple distinguishes free storage from available storage. The available figure can include purgeable caches, so it may overlap with space counted as used. As a result, category totals and the displayed available amount may not appear to reconcile exactly. Apple explains the distinction in its storage guidance.

If you need room for a specific task, such as installing a macOS update, Apple says starting in safe mode may clear certain caches and could provide enough temporary space. macOS recreates caches as needed. This is a temporary measure, not a general cleanup method; do not use it as a reason to remove system files.
