How to Check if Your SSD Will Work in a New Laptop

You can reuse an SSD internally only when the new laptop’s replaceable slot supports its format, size and protocol. A compatible drive may still need Windows recovery or setup.

Sometimes—but only if the new laptop has a replaceable storage slot that supports your SSD’s size and interface. Even when the drive fits, its existing Windows installation may not boot properly on different hardware. Check both laptop models before buying or opening the new one, back up your files, and make sure you can access any encryption recovery key.

Check whether the new laptop accepts your SSD

Compatibility depends on the exact configuration of both laptops. A product family can include versions with different storage options, so use the new laptop’s full model number and configuration when checking its specifications and service manual. Confirm that its storage is replaceable, rather than soldered, and that the manual supports the type of drive you have.

Identify your current SSD from its label, the old laptop’s manual, or its system information. Then compare its physical format and interface with the new laptop’s supported storage.

Match the physical format and size

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is physically different from an M.2 drive. M.2 drives also come in different lengths, commonly identified by numbers such as 2230 and 2280. A laptop’s M.2 slot may have room for only certain lengths. The new laptop’s documentation should specify which formats and lengths it supports.

Match the interface and protocol

M.2 describes a physical form factor, not a guarantee of protocol compatibility. M.2 SSDs can use SATA or PCIe/NVMe, and the laptop’s slot must support the drive’s protocol. A SATA M.2 SSD will not work in a slot that supports only PCIe/NVMe; a PCIe/NVMe SSD will not work in a SATA-only M.2 slot. Some slots support both, so check the specific model’s documentation. Connector keying and, on some systems, shared lanes or SATA ports can also affect which combinations work. Kingston’s SSD FAQ explains the distinctions and compatibility checks.

Prepare before you move the drive

  1. Find the new laptop’s full model and configuration. Consult its manufacturer specifications and service manual for replaceability, supported form factor and length, and interface or protocol.
  2. Identify your current SSD. Determine whether it is 2.5-inch SATA or M.2, and, if it is M.2, whether it uses SATA or PCIe/NVMe.
  3. Back up important files. Do this before removing the drive, so you have another copy if the move or recovery process does not go as planned.
  4. Check encryption and locate the recovery key. BitLocker or Windows Device Encryption may require a recovery key after a hardware change. Verify that you can access it before moving the SSD; without the key, encrypted data cannot be read. See Microsoft’s BitLocker overview.
  5. Plan for setup or recovery. If keeping the old Windows installation matters, check the new laptop maker’s recovery instructions and be prepared to use its recovery or installation route. Windows recovery options may require the BitLocker key; Microsoft’s recovery-options guide describes available approaches.

Will the old Windows installation boot?

That is a separate question from whether the SSD fits. Compatible physical hardware does not guarantee that an existing Windows installation will boot or work correctly after it is moved to a different laptop. There is no universal outcome established for every combination of drive and computer, so do not assume that installing the SSD alone will give you a ready-to-use system.

If internal reuse is not an option

You may still be able to use the SSD externally to access files. Choose an enclosure that matches the drive: 2.5-inch SATA, M.2 SATA, and M.2 NVMe enclosures are not interchangeable. An enclosure connects the drive externally; it does not make an incompatible SSD fit the laptop’s internal slot. Microsoft documents copying files between Windows PCs with an external storage device in its external-storage transfer guide.

Microsoft’s separate PC-to-PC transfer feature is no longer available, and its documentation excludes BitLocker-encrypted drives from that transfer method. That file-transfer guidance does not establish that an old system SSD will boot in a new laptop. See Microsoft’s transfer-feature page.

Some storage is model-specific

Not every computer uses a conventional, interchangeable SSD. For example, Apple’s documentation for the Mac Pro (2023) says its SSD modules are paired to and encrypted by the M2 Ultra secure enclave, and replacement requires a model-specific setup process. That example does not describe all laptops; it is a reason to check the exact target model’s documentation rather than assume every SSD can be swapped. Apple’s Mac Pro SSD instructions cover that specific computer.
