The current Apple AirTag is the second-generation model, introduced in January 2026. It can help you locate keys, bags, luggage, and other belongings through Bluetooth, nearby Precision Finding, and Apple’s Find My network—but it requires a compatible Apple device and Apple Account. Before buying, check your device’s software version and plan how you will attach the tag to your item.
How does AirTag work?
AirTag uses Bluetooth to communicate with nearby devices. When it is within range of its paired iPhone, you can use the Find My app to locate it. The second-generation model adds Apple’s second-generation Ultra Wideband chip for Precision Finding, which guides you with visual, audio, and haptic feedback when you are nearby. It also has NFC for Lost Mode.

If the tag is beyond the paired iPhone’s range, Apple’s Find My network may help: nearby Apple devices can detect the tag’s Bluetooth signal and report an approximate location to its owner. That depends on other Apple devices being in range; it is not GPS tracking or a guarantee of a live location. Apple says Precision Finding also works on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, with the required software.
What changed in the 2026 model?
Apple says the second-generation AirTag’s Precision Finding range is up to 50 percent farther than the previous model, and its speaker is 50 percent louder. Apple also says the tag can be heard from up to twice as far away as its predecessor. These are manufacturer-reported comparisons, not independently verified performance results.

Does AirTag work with Android?
AirTag is designed around Apple’s Find My system and requires an Apple Account plus a compatible iPhone or iPad for setup and normal use. An Android phone cannot set up and manage an AirTag as its owner. Apple describes cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts, but those protections do not make AirTag a general-purpose Android item tracker.
Does AirTag need an iPhone?
You need a compatible Apple device and Apple Account. Apple’s technical specifications list an iPhone running iOS 26.2.1 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 26.1 or later. The requirements are model- and software-specific and may change, so check Apple’s current specifications for your region before purchase.

How far away can you track an AirTag?
There is no single guaranteed maximum distance. Bluetooth and Precision Finding are for locating the tag nearby; actual range depends on surroundings and conditions. Farther away, the Find My network may provide an approximate location if an Apple device detects the tag and relays its location. Apple’s claim that the second-generation Precision Finding range is up to 50 percent greater than the previous generation is a relative comparison, not a fixed distance promise.
What are the AirTag’s size, durability, and battery details?
- Size and weight: 31.9 mm in diameter, 8.0 mm high, and 11.8 g.
- Water and dust resistance: IP67 under IEC 60529, rated for a maximum of one metre for up to 30 minutes in controlled laboratory conditions. Apple warns that resistance can decrease with normal wear.
- Battery: user-replaceable CR2032 coin cell, included in the package. Apple says it lasts more than a year on a standard battery; actual life depends on use and conditions.
- Other hardware: Bluetooth, second-generation Ultra Wideband, NFC, a built-in speaker, and an accelerometer.
Does AirTag come with a key ring?
No. The tag has no built-in ring or loop, so you may need a compatible holder or key ring to secure it to keys, a bag strap, or another item without a pocket or holder. Apple says existing AirTag accessories remain compatible with the 2026 model, which retains the previous form factor. Apple’s FineWoven Key Ring is one option; specific third-party accessories should be checked for compatibility.

What did AirTag cost at launch?
Apple’s January 26, 2026 US announcement listed the second-generation AirTag at $29 for one or $99 for a four-pack, and its FineWoven Key Ring at $35. These are dated launch prices, not verified current prices. Check Apple or retailers for current pricing and availability. Apple offered free personalized engraving through apple.com and the Apple Store app at launch.
A CR2032 replacement is a future battery expense, not a necessary add-on at purchase because one is included.

Is AirTag a good fit for your belongings?
AirTag is most useful if you already use Apple devices, want to locate everyday belongings through Find My, and can attach the tag securely. Consider another approach if you rely on Android, need guaranteed real-time location at any distance, or need a tracker with an integrated attachment point.

- Consider buying if you have a compatible iPhone or iPad, want nearby Precision Finding, and expect Find My network coverage to help with items farther away.
- Plan an accessory if the item has no pocket or holder to keep the tag in place.
- Skip it if you do not have a compatible Apple device or your use requires a feature the tag does not provide, such as guaranteed live tracking wherever the item goes.
Privacy and unwanted tracking
Apple says AirTag does not physically store location data or history, Find My communications are end-to-end encrypted, and devices relaying a location remain anonymous. Apple also describes cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts and says AirTag is designed exclusively for tracking objects, not people or pets. These are Apple’s stated design and protections, not an independent security audit. Use it for belongings, not to track people or animals.
