You can see how much space is left on your iPad in about 30 seconds, without installing anything. Open Settings > General > iPad Storage, and Apple shows the available storage at the top of that screen.
Check available space in iPad Storage
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap iPad Storage.
- Read the available-space figure at the top of the screen. This is the free local storage on the iPad itself.
Apple’s support documentation for managing storage on iPad states that the available storage is shown at the top of the screen. Menu labels can shift slightly between iPadOS releases, so if the path looks different on your device, search for “iPad Storage” in Settings.

Find out what is using the space
Below the summary, the iPad Storage screen lists apps with the amount of storage each one uses. Scroll the list to see which apps take up the most room, then tap an app to open its detail page. The detail page shows its size and offers options for that app. The screen may also show storage recommendations, such as steps to review large files or unused apps.

Apple notes that cached and temporary data may not be counted as app usage, so an app’s listed size can differ from the space you see it consuming. If the total used space does not match the app list, that gap is usually cache and system data rather than a fault.

Device storage is not iCloud storage
The number in iPad Storage is fixed local capacity: the space physically on the tablet. iCloud storage is a separate, cloud-based allowance that holds backups, photos synced with iCloud Photos, and files kept in iCloud Drive. Filling one does not directly fill the other, so a full iCloud plan will not show up on the iPad Storage screen.
To check iCloud, open Settings > your name > iCloud. If you are not signed in with an Apple Account, sign in first, since the iCloud storage panel is only available after you do.

Optional: check storage from a computer
You do not need a computer to read your storage. If you prefer a visual breakdown, connect the iPad and select it in the sidebar or device list of the app Apple uses for it:

- Windows PC: open the Apple Devices app and select the iPad. The storage bar shows the same breakdown.
- Older setups: on systems where iTunes still manages devices, select the iPad in iTunes to see the category bar.
The computer view gives the same answer as the iPad itself, just displayed as a colored bar by category.

If you need to free space
Once you know what is using the space, Apple documents several ways to recover it. Review the recommendations on the iPad Storage screen first. You can offload apps you rarely use: offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data, so reinstalling the app later restores your content. You can also delete content you no longer need, or remove downloaded media and unneeded files from within the apps that store them.
Offloading is the safer choice when you are unsure. Deleting an app removes its data along with it, so check whether an app holds files you have not backed up before you remove it.

Troubleshooting the numbers
- The free space looks lower than expected: the iPad reserves some capacity for the system, and cached data from apps can take up space the app list does not fully show.
- An app is missing from the list: the list shows apps installed on the iPad. Apps that are offloaded still appear, marked as offloaded.
- iCloud is full but the iPad has room: these are separate allowances, so manage iCloud under Settings > your name > iCloud, not the iPad Storage screen.
iPad storage is a fixed amount set by the model you own, and the iPad Storage screen reports that capacity accurately. The usual fix for a full device is to review the app list and offload or remove the largest items you no longer need.
