How to Check How Long Your Chromebook Will Receive Updates

Check Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details > Update schedule to see when your Chromebook will receive its last automatic update.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the Chromebook, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details, then check Update schedule. The date beside “This device will get automatic updates until…” is the support date for that device. Check the Chromebook itself rather than estimating from its brand or purchase year.

Find the update date in ChromeOS settings

  1. Select the time in the lower-right corner of the screen.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. In the left pane, select About ChromeOS.
  4. Select Additional details.
  5. Under Update schedule, read the date in “This device will get automatic updates until [date].”

Google’s instructions show this setting as the place to check when a Chromebook will receive its last automatic update: Check for updates yourself.

If the date is not shown

A Chromebook managed by a school or workplace may display “Updates are managed by your administrator” instead of a date. Contact the school or workplace administrator to ask about the device’s update policy. Google’s update schedule guidance covers this message.

What the update date means

Google’s current policy is to provide Chromebooks with 10 years of automatic updates. Chrome Enterprise and Education Help describes the period as 10 years from the platform release date. Some pre-2021 devices receiving extended updates may not support certain features and services, so use the date displayed on your Chromebook or find the exact model in Google’s automatic update policy.

  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.

Model names alone can be misleading: Google’s list gives the Pixelbook an update date of August 2027 and the Pixelbook Go a date of June 2029. These are examples from Google’s published table, not a substitute for checking your device; the table may change.

A device’s end-of-sale date is not its update end date. Manufacturers decide when a device stops being sold, while Google’s update eligibility is listed separately. Google’s Chromebook update information explains the distinction.

What happens after the final update

When ChromeOS displays a “Final software update” notification, the device will no longer receive ChromeOS or browser updates. That means security updates, bug fixes, and new features stop. Google also warns that some existing features may stop working and some apps require a newer ChromeOS or browser version. Google’s guidance for older Chromebooks outlines the options.

You can move to a newer Chromebook or keep using the existing one, understanding that it will no longer receive automatic software and security updates. If it is a school or work device, check with its administrator about the applicable policy.
