To check a responsive search ad’s text assets, open Campaigns > Ads, find the ad, and select View asset details. For a campaign-wide view, open Campaigns > Assets. Use impressions to see whether an asset was served, but do not treat its CTR, CPC, CPA, or ROAS as proof that the wording caused a result: Google says asset-level ratios are directional because assets appear in combinations. Consider refreshing text only after reviewing the campaign or asset-group results, Ad Strength, and the range of assets available.
Choose the report that answers your question
Google Ads has more than one view of asset performance. Start with the scope that matches the decision you need to make: one responsive search ad, or assets across a broader campaign context.

| Question | Where to look | What the report covers |
|---|---|---|
| How did the text assets in one responsive search ad perform? | Campaigns > Ads > find the responsive search ad > View asset details | Assets associated with that ad, allowing a within-ad comparison. |
| What assets are active across a campaign? | Campaigns > Assets | Active assets associated with active ads, ad groups, and campaigns that had impressions in the last 30 days. |
| Which combinations of assets actually appeared? | Open the relevant combination reporting view. | Combinations served together, which helps explain why an asset-level ratio is not an isolated test of that asset. |
The campaign-level Assets report is not a complete historical inventory of every asset ever added: its stated eligibility includes activity and impressions in the last 30 days. Asset data updates daily, so edits or other recent account changes may not show immediately. For a single-ad question, use that ad’s report rather than assuming the campaign-wide view is a substitute.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThese scopes answer different questions rather than offering interchangeable versions of the same table. The ad-level view helps you inspect the assets associated with one responsive search ad. The campaign-level view is more useful when reviewing active assets across the account’s campaign structure or checking Google-customized text at scale. Because its inclusion window is based on active ads, ad groups, and campaigns with impressions in the last 30 days, it may not show older or inactive material you are trying to investigate.

Before comparing reports, write down the decision you are trying to make. If you are considering a specific headline, begin with its ad-level details; if you want to assess the broader campaign outcome or identify active assets across campaigns, use the campaign-level view too. Combination reporting adds another perspective: it shows which assets appeared together, not a controlled experiment isolating one line of copy.
Set the date range and inspect the right columns
For full performance statistics in responsive search ad asset reporting, Google Ads Help specifies dates on or after June 5, 2025. If you choose an earlier range, the report may not contain the full statistics described in Google’s guidance. Check the date selector before drawing conclusions, especially when comparing a recent edit with an older version.
The old Performance label column is deprecated in these responsive search ad asset reports. Base your review on the available metrics and the goal of the campaign instead of looking for that label or treating it as a current, definitive ranking. Available columns can be selected to make the report useful for the account’s objective.

The Added by column identifies who supplied the asset. Google-customized text is marked Google AI; distinguish it from advertiser-provided copy before deciding what to revise. Filters can narrow the report by state, type, performance, and other attributes, and Google says the reports can be downloaded.
A useful review starts by confirming that the row is the text you think it is. Read the asset itself, check its type, and check whether it was added by the advertiser or generated by Google. This prevents a common category error: attributing a generated variation to a manual copy change, or treating a headline row as though it were a description. If the report is long, filters can reduce the list by state, type, performance, or other attributes; downloading the report can help preserve a review copy or make it easier to inspect the available rows outside the on-screen view.
Keep the date range consistent when comparing assets in the same review. A range before June 5, 2025 may not include the full performance statistics Google describes for responsive search ad assets, while a very recent change may not yet appear because data updates daily. The reporting guidance does not establish a special waiting period for every edit, so do not treat one day’s view as a complete account of a new asset’s performance.
Read asset metrics without over-crediting a headline
Start with impressions
Impressions tell you how often an asset was shown. They are useful for determining whether the system has had opportunities to serve the text. A headline with few impressions has little evidence behind its observed ratio metrics; a zero-impression asset has not been tested in the ordinary sense of receiving exposure. Low or zero delivery alone does not prove that the wording is poor.

Treat ratios as directional
Google Ads Help describes CTR, CPC, CPA, and ROAS at asset level as directional indicators only. A responsive search ad can serve different combinations of assets, and the combination affects the observed result. The headline’s reported CTR, for example, is not a clean causal estimate of how that headline would perform if every other part of the ad and the audience were held constant. Do not use an asset-level ratio as a standalone verdict.
Google also cautions that asset impressions, clicks, and costs may not sum cleanly across reporting levels. Do not add asset rows together and assume the total will reconcile exactly to the ad or campaign figure. For outcomes, review campaign- or asset-group-level results alongside asset detail.
| Metric or view | Useful question | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | Was this asset served, and how much exposure did it receive? | Use as context for how much evidence exists; it is not a measure of copy quality by itself. |
| CTR, CPC, CPA, or ROAS at asset level | What direction does the asset’s reported ratio suggest? | Use as directional context, not causal proof or a universal pass/fail score. |
| Campaign or asset-group results | Is the broader advertising effort meeting its goal? | Use for outcome assessment rather than attributing the whole result to one text asset. |
| Combination reporting | Which assets appeared together? | Use to understand the context behind a reported asset result. |
| Ad Strength | Does the ad have a diverse range of assets? | Review before replacing text; Google recommends first aiming for Excellent by providing a diverse range up to the applicable maximum. |
Think of the asset report as a diagnostic view, not a leaderboard that proves one sentence caused a business outcome. The ratios reflect the contexts in which the system served that text, including the other assets in the combinations. That is why a higher asset-level CTR or ROAS is a reason to investigate, not a sufficient reason to keep one line and discard another. Google’s guidance does not supply a universal minimum number of impressions or a single ratio cutoff for deciding that a headline is successful.
Use the metric that matches the question. Impressions address delivery: did the asset appear, and how much exposure did it receive? CTR, CPC, CPA, and ROAS offer directional context about observed performance, but they do not isolate the text’s effect. Campaign- or asset-group-level results are the more appropriate place to judge whether the broader effort is meeting its objective. Combination reporting can then provide context for what was served together.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Also avoid summing asset rows as if each were a separate, mutually exclusive campaign result. Google says impressions, clicks, and costs at asset level may not be summable across levels. A difference between an asset-row total and an ad or campaign total is not, on its own, proof that the report is wrong. Read each view at its own scope and use it for the kind of question it can answer.
Decide whether text needs refreshing
Do not replace a headline merely because one number looks worse than another asset’s number. Compare like asset types within the same report scope, check how much each asset was served, and assess results against the campaign goal. Then consider the overall campaign or asset-group outcome, Ad Strength, and whether the ad has a diverse set of available text assets.
- Confirm the asset and its source. Check its text, asset type, and Added by value. Do not mistake Google-customized text marked “Google AI” for advertiser-written copy.
- Confirm there is enough context. Select a date range on or after June 5, 2025 for the full responsive search ad asset statistics described by Google. Account for the daily update cadence when reviewing recent changes.
- Check delivery and combinations. Use impressions to see whether the asset served, and consult combination reporting to see what appeared alongside it.
- Judge against the real campaign goal. Read asset-level ratios as directional, then check campaign- or asset-group-level results. Do not infer that an individual phrase caused a conversion or cost change from a ratio alone.
- Review asset variety and Ad Strength. Google recommends regularly reviewing Ad Strength and first aiming for Excellent by providing a diverse range of assets up to the applicable maximum before replacing or refreshing assets.
- Make a considered refresh decision. Google says an asset with zero impressions for several weeks may be considered for replacement. “Several weeks” is guidance, not a required waiting period, a universal threshold, or a guarantee that replacement will improve results.
There is no single replacement threshold established for every campaign. A low-delivery asset may warrant another look, but distinguish “not receiving exposure” from “receiving exposure and failing the campaign’s objective.” The right next step depends on both the asset’s evidence and the broader result.

For a practical comparison, keep like with like: compare headlines with headlines, or descriptions with descriptions, within the same report scope and date range. Check impressions first so you know whether the asset had an opportunity to appear. Then consider the ratios as directional signals and look at campaign or asset-group outcomes against the actual campaign goal. This avoids treating a headline’s isolated row as a miniature experiment when the reporting does not establish that its wording alone drove the result.
Zero impressions calls for a different question than weak results after exposure. If an asset has not appeared, there is little direct evidence about how users respond to it. Google suggests considering replacement when an asset has received zero impressions for several weeks, but that is a consideration rather than a diagnosis or a fixed rule. If it has received impressions, examine the broader context before deciding whether its copy needs to change. Neither situation creates a guaranteed performance improvement from swapping text.
Ad Strength belongs in the decision, but it is not a replacement for business outcomes. Google recommends regularly reviewing it and first aiming for Excellent by providing a diverse range of assets up to the applicable maximum before replacing or refreshing assets. The practical implication is to avoid narrowing an ad’s available text prematurely. Review the range of assets and the campaign’s results together; do not use one metric or label as the sole test.
Replace an underperforming headline or description carefully
The reports are useful for identifying what to review, but the reporting guidance does not establish a current, exact sequence of editor clicks for replacing a particular responsive search ad headline or description. Google’s help material confirms that individual Google-generated text assets can be removed, but that fact should not be mistaken for a complete editing procedure for advertiser-provided responsive search ad text.
Once you decide a refresh is justified, open the relevant ad in the current Google Ads editing interface and confirm that you are changing the intended responsive search ad and text field before saving. The exact labels and steps can vary with the current interface and campaign type; follow the live controls shown in the account rather than relying on instructions for another asset type. Review the resulting ad and its asset report after changes have had time to appear in the daily-updated data.
Do not apply a procedure from a Display asset report to a responsive search ad. Google’s Display reporting guidance says direct editing from the report is available only for text assets; that does not establish equivalent report-based editing for responsive search ad headlines or descriptions. Use the applicable ad editor for the campaign type.
Before changing anything, confirm the campaign and ad you intend to update, identify the text field, and distinguish advertiser-provided copy from Google-generated text. Make the change in the editor that applies to that campaign type, using the current interface rather than assuming a report row is itself an edit control. After the edit, allow for the daily data update before interpreting the report as a complete reflection of the change. This is a careful workflow, not a promise that a particular replacement will improve results.

For Google-generated text, the available help information supports removal of individual generated assets. That is narrower than a general instruction for rewriting an advertiser-supplied headline or description. Keep those actions separate: removing a generated asset and editing a responsive search ad’s authored text are different tasks, and the report guidance does not provide a full click-by-click procedure for the latter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Understand Google-customized text before changing it
Text customization can make the visible copy different from text written directly by the advertiser. In asset reporting, Google-customized text is marked Google AI in Added by. Google says customized text is available in channel-level and campaign-level reports, and that campaign-level reporting is the best way to review it at scale. For a particular combination, use combination reporting as well as the asset row so you can see how assets were served together.
Google’s help information says individual Google-generated text assets can be removed. It also says the system may remove assets it determines will not perform after some time, when they are assigned Low performance, or when their source changes. Those system actions are not a substitute for reviewing campaign outcomes, and removing a generated asset is distinct from editing advertiser-provided copy.
Google Ads Help describes a text-customization upgrade announced for September 2026 for applicable campaigns. Since availability and migration status may depend on the campaign and current account interface, check the live Google Ads controls and current help wording before assuming the upgrade applies to a particular campaign.
When reviewing generated text at scale, use the campaign-level report rather than trying to infer account-wide behavior from one ad’s details. The Google AI marker in Added by is the key clue for distinguishing customized text from advertiser-provided assets. Combination reporting adds context about which generated and advertiser-provided assets appeared together. This matters because an asset row’s result reflects the combinations in which the text was served.
Google says the system may remove generated text assets it determines will not perform after some time, if they are assigned Low performance, or when their source changes. Treat those as system behaviors, not as evidence that every low-performing asset should be manually removed or that the system’s action proves a campaign has met its goal. Check the live account and current help wording for applicable controls, particularly because Google Ads Help announced an upgrade to text customization for applicable campaigns in September 2026.
Common interpretation mistakes to avoid
- Using the wrong scope: the ad-level report answers a within-ad question; the campaign Assets page is a broader view with its own active-asset and recent-impression scope.
- Using an old date range: the full responsive search ad asset statistics described by Google apply to dates on or after June 5, 2025.
- Looking for a deprecated label: the old Performance label column is deprecated in these reports; use available metrics in relation to campaign goals.
- Calling an asset a winner from CTR or ROAS alone: combinations influence asset-level ratios, which Google characterizes as directional.
- Adding asset rows as if they were campaign totals: asset impressions, clicks, and costs may not be summable across levels.
- Assuming zero impressions proves poor copy: it shows the asset was not served during the selected period, not why it was not served.
- Expecting an immediate report update: asset data updates daily, so very recent account changes may not appear at once.
- Using Display instructions for search ads: report editing behavior described for Display does not establish the same capability for responsive search ads.
One more mistake is to treat the campaign-level Assets page as a record of every asset ever used. Its stated scope is active assets associated with active ads, ad groups, and campaigns that had impressions in the last 30 days. If you are looking for an older or inactive item, this view may not answer that historical question. Likewise, don’t interpret a report that has not yet updated as evidence that an edit failed; Google says asset data updates daily.
Best Value
Finally, avoid writing a conclusion that promises an uplift from replacing text. Google’s guidance supports a review process and a possible replacement consideration for assets with zero impressions for several weeks. It does not establish a universal cutoff, a guaranteed diagnosis, or a quantified result from replacement. Treat a refresh as a decision to review and manage the asset mix, then assess the broader campaign outcome in the appropriate reporting scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I find the responsive search ad asset report in Google Ads?
Open Campaigns > Ads, locate the responsive search ad, and select View asset details. For a broader active-asset view, open Campaigns > Assets.
Why does my Google Ads text asset have no impressions?
Zero impressions means the asset was not served during the selected period; it does not by itself explain why or prove the wording is poor. Google suggests considering replacement if an asset has zero impressions for several weeks, but this is guidance rather than a universal threshold.
Recommended Free Tools
Can I judge a headline by its CTR, CPA, or ROAS?
Use asset-level CTR, CPC, CPA, and ROAS only as directional indicators. Responsive search ads serve combinations of assets, so a ratio is not isolated proof that one headline caused the result. Review campaign- or asset-group-level outcomes too.
Why don’t asset totals match my campaign totals?
Google cautions that asset impressions, clicks, and costs may not sum cleanly across reporting levels. Avoid adding asset rows together as if they were mutually exclusive campaign totals.
How can I tell whether text was written by me or generated by Google?
Check the Added by column. Google-customized text is marked Google AI. Google says campaign-level reporting is the best way to review text customization at scale.
When should I replace an underperforming responsive search ad headline?
There is no universal replacement threshold in Google’s guidance. Compare like asset types in the same scope, check impressions and combinations, review campaign or asset-group results and Ad Strength, and consider replacement if an asset has had zero impressions for several weeks. That consideration does not guarantee improvement.

Use Campaigns > Ads > View asset details to investigate one responsive search ad, and Campaigns > Assets for a wider active-asset view. Check a date range on or after June 5, 2025, identify whether text is advertiser-provided or marked Google AI, and treat asset-level ratios as directional because combinations affect them. Review campaign or asset-group outcomes and Ad Strength before making a considered refresh; zero impressions for several weeks is a reason to consider replacement, not a guaranteed diagnosis or promise of better results.
