Use Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode to change when the console enters Rest Mode after inactivity, and Features Available in Rest Mode to choose whether it can charge connected devices or stay connected to the internet while resting. These are separate settings, so adjust both to match how you use the console.
The timing option controls when the console enters Rest Mode automatically. The feature switches control what it can do once there. Keeping a feature such as USB power or internet access enabled can be convenient, but Sony says that enabling more Rest Mode features increases power use in that state. Choose the functions you actually need rather than treating Rest Mode as either a single on/off setting or a full shutdown.

Change when your PS5 enters Rest Mode
- From the PS5 home screen, select Settings.
- Open System > Power Saving > Set Time Until PS5 Enters Rest Mode.
- Choose the inactivity timing you want. The console provides separate timing settings for media playback and other modes; select the relevant setting and choose an available option.
This setting determines how long the PS5 can remain inactive in the relevant mode before it automatically enters Rest Mode. Media playback and other modes have separate timing controls, so setting one does not necessarily set the other. If you want to change the behavior for both kinds of use, review both timing settings rather than assuming they share one timer.
If you choose Don’t Put in Rest Mode, the PS5 stays on instead of entering Rest Mode automatically. Sony warns that this consumes more power. This option is therefore different from selecting a longer inactivity interval: it keeps the console on rather than allowing the automatic transition to Rest Mode. If your goal is simply to give yourself more time before the console rests, choose an available time interval instead of disabling automatic Rest Mode entirely.

Sony’s published environmental guidance lists defaults of four hours for media playback, and 20 minutes in Europe or one hour in the rest of the world for other modes. Those are regional defaults described on Sony’s page, not a guarantee of the setting on every console today; the page does not state a publication year, and software or settings may change. Check the options shown on your console if you need to know its current timing. Sony’s environmental guidance has the regional figures.
Choose what the PS5 can do in Rest Mode
Go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on only the functions you need. These switches are independent of the automatic inactivity timing: you can allow the PS5 to enter Rest Mode on schedule while choosing whether it continues to supply USB power or stay connected to the internet. The table summarizes what those choices enable and when they may be useful.
| Setting | What it enables | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Supply Power to USB Ports | Power to compatible connected accessories, including controller charging. | Enable it if you want to charge a compatible controller while the console rests. |
| Stay Connected to the Internet | An internet connection while the console is in Rest Mode, supporting downloads and updates. | Enable it for supported downloads or updates while away from the console. For Remote Play, also enable network wake and Remote Play. |
The practical choice is whether each function is worth having available while the console is resting. If you do not need a connected USB accessory to charge, you can leave USB power off. If you do not need the console online for downloads, updates or Remote Play, you can leave its internet connection off in Rest Mode. Sony says that enabling more Rest Mode features increases power use in that state, so the useful configuration depends on which conveniences matter to you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSony’s power-saving guidance says that if any Rest Mode feature is enabled, the console does not automatically lower its power consumption below 0.5 W when entering Rest Mode. That is a threshold in Sony’s description, not a claim that every PS5 configuration uses exactly 0.5 W or that a particular setting will produce a particular household energy bill. The same guidance says that more enabled features mean more power consumed in Rest Mode. Sony’s power-saving guide explains the relationship between features and power.
Charge a controller in Rest Mode
Turn on Supply Power to USB Ports, then connect a compatible controller to the PS5 with its USB cable. Sony’s charging guide says to use the included cable and lists Always and 3 Hours as USB power choices. The labels describe how long USB ports are supplied with power after the console enters Rest Mode: choose Always if you want power to remain available, or 3 Hours if you want it available for a limited period. This is a USB-power setting, not a requirement to change the console’s automatic Rest Mode timing.

Sony also documents an Adaptive option for supported newer console model groups: the charging guide identifies CFI-2000 models, while Sony’s general power-saving page refers to CFI-2000/7000 model groups. Because Sony’s pages describe the model coverage differently, check the options displayed on your own console rather than assuming Adaptive is available on every PS5. The setting shown on your system is the useful guide to which USB-power choices are available for that console. Sony’s controller and accessory charging instructions provide the charging steps.
If charging in Rest Mode is your only reason to enable USB power, you can leave the internet feature disabled unless you also want internet-dependent functions. Conversely, keeping the console connected to the internet does not by itself enable USB charging. These are separate feature choices, so enable the one that matches the task you want the console to perform.

Allow downloads and updates
Enable Stay Connected to the Internet if you want the console to remain online in Rest Mode. Sony says downloads of games bought through PlayStation App and pre-ordered games are available while the console is connected to the internet in Rest Mode. That means the Rest Mode internet switch is relevant when you want those supported downloads to be available while you are away from the console, rather than only when it is on and in use.
Automatic updates can also be configured; internet connectivity alone does not replace those update settings. Keep the distinction in mind: Stay Connected to the Internet allows the console to remain connected in Rest Mode, while the auto-download and update controls govern whether eligible downloads or updates are configured to happen automatically. If you want both the internet connection and automatic update behavior, check the separate update configuration as well. See Sony’s instructions for automatic downloads and updates for the separate configuration.
If your priority is lower standby power rather than downloads or updates while resting, you can leave the internet feature off and use the console’s other power-saving choices. If you rely on a download or update being available during Rest Mode, keep internet connectivity enabled and configure automatic behavior where applicable. Sony does not give a universal completion time for downloads in its power-saving guidance, so do not treat Rest Mode connectivity as a promise that any particular game or update will finish by a particular time.

Use Remote Play while the PS5 rests
Internet connectivity by itself is not enough to wake the console for Remote Play. In addition to Stay Connected to the Internet, turn on Enable Turning on PS5 from Network and enable Remote Play in the Remote Play settings. Sony lists these requirements in its Remote Play setup guidance.

Think of this as a set of related but distinct requirements: the console needs to stay connected to the internet in Rest Mode, it needs permission to be turned on from the network, and Remote Play itself needs to be enabled. Turning on only the Rest Mode internet switch does not cover the other two setup requirements. If Remote Play is the reason you are changing the settings, verify all three instead of changing the inactivity timer or assuming the network connection alone is sufficient.
Choose settings for convenience or lower standby use
The main trade-off is between having the console ready to perform tasks while resting and reducing its standby power use. USB power can keep a connected accessory charging; internet connectivity supports eligible downloads and updates and is part of the Remote Play setup. Sony says that enabling more Rest Mode features means the PS5 consumes more power in Rest Mode. If minimizing standby use is the priority, disable features you do not need, or turn the console off when you are finished rather than leaving it in Rest Mode.
There is also a separate choice between automatic Rest Mode and staying on. A shorter inactivity interval lets the console enter Rest Mode sooner when idle; a longer interval keeps it from doing so as quickly. Selecting Don’t Put in Rest Mode means it stays on, which Sony specifically says consumes more power. This is not the same as disabling Rest Mode features: one setting controls whether the console enters Rest Mode automatically, while the feature switches control what remains available after it enters that state.
Rest Mode is not the same as being fully off. Sony describes three power states for PS5: on, Rest Mode and off. Rest Mode is a low-powered state, but the features you enable affect consumption. If you want the console to perform the supported Rest Mode functions you selected, such as keeping internet access or supplying USB power, Rest Mode provides that option. If those functions are not needed and lowering standby use is more important, disable unneeded features or choose a full shutdown instead.

Sony does not provide a single measured wattage for every configuration in the cited guidance, so an exact household energy cost cannot be inferred from its 0.5 W threshold. The threshold should not be read as an exact reading for every console or as a bill estimate. The decision supported by Sony’s guidance is comparative: enabling more Rest Mode features increases power use in that state, and choosing Don’t Put in Rest Mode keeps the console on and consumes more power. For the lowest standby use among the described choices, avoid enabling Rest Mode features you do not use and turn the console off when appropriate.
Enter Rest Mode or turn the PS5 off safely
To enter Rest Mode manually, press the PS button to open the Control Center, select Power > Enter Rest Mode, or press the console’s power button once. This gives you a way to put the console into Rest Mode before the automatic inactivity timer would do so. To shut down fully, choose Power > Turn Off PS5. A full shutdown is a different state from Rest Mode, so use the turn-off command rather than Enter Rest Mode when you intend to switch the console off.
Before unplugging the AC power cord, wait until the power indicator is off. Sony warns that disconnecting power while the indicator is lit or blinking can cause data loss, data corruption, or damage. Do not use unplugging as a substitute for the console’s shutdown controls. The PS5 has distinct on, Rest Mode and off states; entering Rest Mode is not the same as turning the console off. Sony’s power-saving and shutdown guidance covers these states and precautions.

If you want the console to rest automatically and have no special Rest Mode needs, choose an inactivity period that suits your use and leave optional features disabled. If you want to charge a connected controller, turn on USB power and select one of the choices available on your console. If you want eligible downloads or updates while it rests, enable internet connectivity and review the separate automatic update settings. If you want Remote Play, also enable network wake and Remote Play itself. These choices can be combined, but Sony says each additional Rest Mode feature contributes to greater power use in that state.
If your priority is to keep the PS5 from entering Rest Mode automatically, select Don’t Put in Rest Mode for the relevant inactivity behavior, understanding that the console will stay on and use more power. If your priority is to reduce standby use, disable functions you do not need or choose Turn Off PS5 when finished. In either case, use the on-screen power controls and wait for the indicator to turn off before disconnecting AC power.
