If you buy the game after the event, Xbox says you can continue and keep the Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event; whether a particular checkpoint or save carries over depends on the game and the save-sync situation.
How to check your Free Play Days progress
Open the game and use its own progress display, such as a save, checkpoint, quest, career, or continue screen. Xbox’s event instructions explain where to find participating games, but do not describe a shared event-wide percentage tracker. The games available and their access requirements vary by event, membership tier, and region.

Find and launch a participating game
- On console, open the Xbox Store’s Subscriptions tab and find the Free Play Days collection. You can also open a participating game’s detail page and install it from the Microsoft Store while signed in.
- Launch the game and check its own progress or save menu. For a specific event’s dates, titles, and eligibility, use the current listing rather than an older event announcement.
For example, a June 4, 2026 Xbox Wire announcement listed a particular set of games for June 4–7, 2026, for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and Essential members; it also offered Descenders on console to all Xbox players. Those dates and requirements applied to that event only. Xbox noted that discounts, percentages, and title availability could vary by game and region. Read the announcement.

Will your save still be there after Free Play Days?
Xbox says that players who purchase a game can continue playing and keep the Gamerscore and achievements they earned during Free Play Days. That statement does not guarantee that every game will preserve every checkpoint, save point, or cross-platform state. Save design and access requirements can differ by title.

Xbox cloud saves are separate from the temporary permission to launch a game. Microsoft’s developer documentation describes a system in which a session’s data is saved locally, then the device attempts to upload it when the session ends and a network connection is available. Offline changes can sync later. If both the local and cloud copies have changed, the game may prompt you to choose which copy to keep. Microsoft’s save-sync documentation describes this process.
Reduce the chance of losing recent progress
- Play while signed in to the Xbox account you intend to use when you return.
- Before ending a session, connect to Xbox network and allow the game to finish saving and syncing. Wait for any sync activity or conflict prompt to complete.
- If the game presents a local-versus-cloud conflict, check which copy has the latest progress before choosing. Do not assume one copy is newer merely because it is in the cloud.
- After your access is restored, relaunch the game and check its in-game progress display.
Microsoft’s documentation explains the platform sync flow, but a game may have its own save design or online requirements. A successful cloud sync does not itself grant permission to launch a game after an event ends.

Can you continue on another console or on PC?
Use the same Xbox account when returning. Whether progress follows you to another device also depends on the game, edition, and platform support. Microsoft’s policy describes save roaming in specified Xbox cases, including supported same-platform and cross-generation situations. Its rules also say that progress in Xbox Play Anywhere games is saved with the gamertag for continuation on another device. That does not make every Free Play Days title a Play Anywhere game or establish cross-progression for every title.

Microsoft’s XR-052 policy sets out the supported save-roaming cases, and its digital goods rules explain the Play Anywhere benefit. These sources describe program and platform support, not a guarantee that every title participates.

What to do when the save does not appear
- Confirm that you are signed in to the same Xbox account used during the trial.
- Check that you launched the same game and edition. Different editions or save identities may not share progress.
- Connect to Xbox network and give the game a chance to sync. If a conflict prompt appears, compare the progress in each copy before choosing.
- If you are switching to PC, verify that the title supports Xbox Play Anywhere rather than assuming that a console save will carry over.
- Check the game’s own support information for save-specific requirements or limits. General Xbox documentation cannot establish the exact checkpoint behavior of an unnamed game.
