For a predictable starting point, try Locked 30fps with Frame Generation off; if smoother-looking motion matters more, compare Variable Frame Rate with Frame Generation both on and off. Launch-week reviewers disagree about which feels best, and the result can vary between handheld and docked play, so use the same demanding scene to make your own comparison.

Which settings should you change first?
Start with the combination that matches what you value, then change one option at a time. These are comparison starting points, not a universally best configuration:

|---|---|---|
| Locked 30fps, Frame Generation off | A straightforward baseline with a consistent frame-rate target. RPG Site’s reviewer preferred Frame Generation off after trying the default combination. | It may look less fluid than generated output. GameWatcher reported that the cap does not itself raise resolution or visual quality. |
| Variable Frame Rate, Frame Generation on | Worth comparing if smoother-looking motion is your priority. GameWatcher recommended trying this pairing, particularly with a VRR-compatible display. | Frame pacing can feel less consistent, and generated frames can bring visual artifacts or a less direct control feel. Reviewer impressions differ. |
| Variable Frame Rate, Frame Generation off | Helps you judge whether variable-rate operation suits you without frame generation affecting the comparison. | Nintendo Life reported occasional choppiness with variable frame rate. |
| Locked 30fps, Frame Generation on | A useful test if you prefer the 30fps lock but want to see whether generated output makes motion look smoother. Nintendo Life observed smoother motion with frame generation at the lock. | Smoother-looking motion does not mean the game is rendering more native frames at that rate; look for artifacts and changes in control feel. |
The reported controls include a variable frame-rate option, a 30fps lock, and an FSR 3 Frame Generation toggle. Reviewers’ impressions come from launch-week play: Nintendo Life favored variable frame rate overall, while RPG Site’s reviewer preferred Frame Generation off. The menu labels or behavior may change with updates, so confirm what your installed build offers.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How to compare the options in your game
- Choose a scene you can repeat, such as a busy town and a combat encounter. Reviews reported occasional choppiness and different impressions between handheld and docked play, so a quiet opening area alone may not tell you enough.
- Set the game to Locked 30fps and turn Frame Generation off. Play the scene long enough to judge both motion and how responsive the controls feel.
- Change only the frame-rate option to Variable Frame Rate. Repeat the scene, noting whether motion feels smoother or pacing less consistent.
- Turn Frame Generation on and repeat your preferred frame-rate option. Then turn it off once more to compare the same scene directly.
- Keep the combination that feels better to you. If controls seem less direct or visual oddities distract you, compare with Frame Generation off; those effects were reported by reviewers, but are not guaranteed for every player or build.
Frame Generation inserts estimated, interpolated frames between rendered frames. It can make motion appear smoother, but it is not the same as the game rendering every frame natively at a higher rate. GameWatcher and RPG Site reviewers noted possible hair or head-image oddities, especially during fast camera movement; RPG Site also described perceived input lag. Treat these as potential tradeoffs to check for, not inevitable problems.
What changes between handheld and docked play?
Both modes are supported, but reviewers did not report identical performance impressions in every situation; some play was described as choppier when docked. Try your chosen settings in the mode you actually use, rather than assuming a handheld result will carry over to a TV.

GameWatcher reported that brightness calibration is shared across portable and TV modes, including HDR and non-HDR use. If you switch between the built-in screen and a television, revisit brightness so the image still looks right. Nintendo’s UK product listing specifies handheld, tabletop, and TV modes, and HDR on compatible TVs; those are listing details for the UK edition.

Do not treat Frame Generation as confirmation of a native 60fps mode. Before release, producer Naoto Oyama told TechRadar that performance was at a minimum 30 frames per second on the hardware and higher in many scenes. That was a pre-release statement, not a retail-build benchmark. The launch-week reports describe optional frame generation separately; they do not establish a native 60fps mode.
