To check a Windows volume without changing it, run chkdsk C:; to fix file-system errors, use chkdsk C: /f. For NTFS, /scan checks the volume online, while /r searches for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information as well as performing /f repairs. CHKDSK can repair file-system problems, but it cannot physically repair a failing drive.
What CHKDSK checks—and what it cannot repair
CHKDSK examines a volume’s file-system structures and metadata for logical errors and certain physical errors. With no repair switch, it reports status but does not fix errors. It is not a universal drive-health test: a clean report does not prove that the storage device, its connections, or the wider storage subsystem is healthy. Microsoft’s CHKDSK command reference documents the command for Windows 10, Windows 11, and several Windows Server releases, among other Microsoft environments.

chkdsk C: |
Reports the volume’s status. | Does not repair errors. |
chkdsk C: /scan |
Runs an online scan of an NTFS volume. | Scan mode, not the same as running /f to repair errors. |
chkdsk C: /f |
Fixes file-system errors. | Requires the volume to be locked; Windows may offer to schedule the check at restart if it is in use. |
chkdsk C: /r |
Searches for bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information. | Includes /f behavior, requires a lock, and can take considerable time on large volumes. |
chkdsk C: /x |
Forces a dismount if necessary. | Includes /f; open handles to the volume are invalidated. |
chkdsk C: /spotfix |
Runs spot fixing on an NTFS volume. | Repair mode; consult Microsoft’s command reference for its exact use and applicability. |
chkdsk C: /scan /forceofflinefix |
Scans NTFS online and queues detected defects for offline repair. | Use /forceofflinefix with /scan; queued repairs require offline handling. |
chkdsk C: /scan /perf |
Runs an NTFS online scan using more system resources. | Can reduce performance for other tasks. |
Switch availability depends on the file system. For example, /scan is NTFS-only; check the Microsoft reference before using advanced switches on FAT, FAT32, or exFAT volumes.

Run a check or repair from an elevated terminal
- Identify the correct volume. Replace
C:in the examples with the target drive letter, mount point, or volume name. Confirm it carefully before running a repair. - Open an elevated terminal. CHKDSK requires membership in the local Administrators group or equivalent. Open Command Prompt or Windows Terminal with administrator privileges.
- Choose the command for your purpose. For an NTFS inspection without repair, run
chkdsk C: /scan. To repair file-system errors, runchkdsk C: /f. Use/ronly when a bad-sector search and readable-data recovery attempt are warranted. - Read the result. Review the report and any prompt. If Windows cannot lock the volume for
/f, it may ask whether to schedule the check at the next restart. Answer according to whether you want the repair to proceed then.
Repair operations can change file-system metadata. On FAT file systems, for example, repairs can alter allocation tables or encounter lost allocation chains. Microsoft’s command documentation describes a prompt that can save recovered chains as File<nnnn>.chk files if you choose Yes. Consider the implications before accepting a repair prompt, especially if important files are already missing.
When to use /scan, /f, or /r
Start with an online NTFS scan when you want to inspect
chkdsk C: /scan checks an NTFS volume online. It is useful when you want to look for potential file-system issues without running the /f repair operation. Microsoft’s server troubleshooting checklist also recommends scan mode when looking for potential storage-system issues without making changes. That server guidance is useful context, not a consumer-specific diagnostic standard.

Use /f to fix file-system errors
/f asks CHKDSK to fix errors it finds. The volume must be locked for this operation. If the volume is busy or is the Windows boot volume, the tool may offer to schedule the check for restart, when Windows can work on it offline.

Reserve /r for a bad-sector search
/r locates bad sectors and attempts to recover readable information. It includes /f behavior, so it is not merely a deeper version of a status check. The operation can involve reading every sector and may take a long time on a large volume; no single runtime applies to every drive. It does not guarantee that every file will be restored, and it does not repair failing hardware.

Know the consequences of forcing a dismount
/x forces a dismount if necessary and includes /f. Because a dismount invalidates open handles to the volume, applications using it can be disrupted. Do not add /x casually; use it only when you understand that consequence.
Why CHKDSK may run at restart—and how to judge progress
A repair needs access to the volume. If Windows cannot lock an in-use volume for /f, it can ask to schedule the check for the next restart. A boot partition may restart automatically after the check. Let the scheduled operation complete rather than interrupting it based on a guessed time limit: large volumes and full-sector operations can take a long time, and Microsoft’s documentation does not promise a universal duration.

Microsoft documents these CHKDSK exit codes. Treat the code as one diagnostic clue; read the report too, and investigate ongoing symptoms rather than assuming the code proves the device is healthy.
| Exit code | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 0 | No errors were found. |
| 1 | Errors were found and fixed. |
| 2 | Disk cleanup was performed, or was not performed because /f was omitted. |
| 3 | The disk could not be checked, errors could not be fixed, or errors were left unfixed because /f was not specified. |
What to do if errors return or files are missing
Repeated corruption or unsuccessful input/output (I/O) requests can point beyond a file-system problem. Microsoft’s NTFS troubleshooting guidance identifies bad sectors and unsuccessful I/O requests as possible contributors to NTFS corruption, and advises checking the disk subsystem and hardware state, storage connections, and relevant drivers or firmware. That page addresses Windows Server troubleshooting; these are avenues to investigate, not a consumer failure diagnosis or proof of a particular cause.

If important data is at risk or a device may be failing, protect the data and investigate the storage hardware instead of repeatedly relying on CHKDSK as a complete fix. If files are already lost, CHKDSK is not a dedicated file-recovery product. Microsoft’s Windows File Recovery guidance applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11 and advises minimizing or avoiding computer use to improve recovery chances. It does not guarantee recovery.
